3. ESSENTIAL UNDERSTANDING
• The core teaching and
message of Christianity is
that a loving God sent His
begotten Son to redeem
humanity from eternal
damnation.
4.
5. What is Christianity?
• Christianity established out of
Judaism in the 1st century C.E.
• It is coined on the life, wisdoms,
death, and resurrection of Jesus
Christ, and those who follow him
are named "Christians."

17. The three major branches of
Christianity
•Roman Catholicism
•Eastern Orthodoxy,
and
•Protestantism
18. • Traditional Christian views include
the belief in the one and only true
God, who is one being and exists
as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,
and the belief that Jesus is the
divine and Messiah sent to the
save the world.
19. • Christianity is also noted for its
importance on faith in Christ as the
main element of religion.
• The sacred text of Christianity is the
Bible, with both the Hebrew
Scriptures (also known as the Old
Testament) and the New Testament.
21. • Roman Catholicism is a global religious
practice of some 1.1 billion followers.
• It traces its history to Jesus of Nazareth,
and roving minister in the area around
Jerusalem during the period of Roman
occupation, in the early 30s of the
Common Era
22. • Over a period of some years after Jesus' life,
death, and resurrection, the bishops spread
out across the world to form a "universal"
(Greek, katholikos) church, with the bishop of
Rome (traced to the apostle Peter) holding
primacy.
• Nowadays Vatican City — and specially, Saint
Peter's Basilica — stands over the grave of
Peter, and the pope is measured Peter's
successor.
23. IMPORTANT DATES FOR THE
CHRISTIANS
• 325 A.D. — Council of Nicea.
• The first post-apostolic ecumenical
council of the Christian community at
which Church leaders formed a creedal
declaration of faith recognized generally.

26. ISSUES TO BE RESOLVED BY
THE COUNCIL OF NICEA
• The main theological issue had always been about
Christ. Since the end of the apostolic age,
Christians had begun debating these questions:
– Who is the Christ?
– Is He more divine than human or more human than
divine?
– Was Jesus created or begotten?
– Being the Son of God, is He co-equal and co-eternal with
the Father, or is He lower in status than the Father?
– Is the Father the one true God, or are the Father, Son,
and Spirit the one true God?
27. • A priest named Arius presented his
argument that Jesus Christ was not an
eternal being, that He was created at a
certain point in time by the Father.
• Bishops such as Alexander and the
deacon Athanasius argued the opposite
position: that Jesus Christ is eternal, just like
the Father is. It was an argument pitting
trinitarianism against monarchianism.
28. • 381 A.D. — First Council of
Constantinople.
• This assembly amended and
authorized the Nicene Creed,
resulting in the form used by
Christian churches around the
world.
