•Throughout its history, Christianity has
weathered schisms and theological
disputes that have resulted in many
distinct churches and denominations.
Worldwide, the three largest branches of
Christianity are the Catholic Church,
the Eastern Orthodox Church,
and the various denominations of
Protestantism.
Who is Jesus before
the crucifixion?
• Jesus was born in Bethlehem to a woman called Mary
who was still a virgin at that time.
Jesus grew up in Israel under the care of his earthly parents
called Mary and Joseph and was taught in the ways of
Judaism. However, when he reached the age of 30, he began
his own ministry which ushered in Christianity. He taught that
human beings could only enter the kingdom of God if they
accepted him as the son of God and repented from their evil
deeds.
• Jesus was a humble teacher respected and feared by many
including those who were in authority. His teachings were
largely based on love and fear of God. He gathered a
group of 12 people whom he named the disciples and took
with him through the various journeys of the ministry.
Jesus was crucified 3 years after starting his ministry but
is believed to have risen from the dead on the third day. After
his resurrection, he ascended to heaven leaving his disciples
in charge of spreading the good news.

What is the Sacred text of
Christianity?
THE BIBLE
• The primary sacred text of Christianity is the
Bible. Its name is derived from the Latin word
biblia, which simply means "books." The
Christian Bible is made of two parts: the Old
Testament, which is almost identical to the
Jewish Bible; and the New Testament, a
collection of Christian writings that includes
biographies of Jesus Christ and the apostles, like
the Apostle Paul, letters to new churches, and
an apocalyptic work.
•The names given to these two parts of the
Bible are significant. The word testament
means "covenant," so the notion of old and
new testaments reflects the Christian
perspective that the Church is the successor
to Israel as God's chosen people
Holidays and Celebration
of Christianity
• Barrio Fiesta
•Christmas Season
• Lenten Season
• Jesus was arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane (Mark
14:43-52).
Jesus endured six trials - three by Jewish leaders and
three by the Romans (John 18:12-14, Mark 14:53-
65, Mark 15:1a, Mark 15: 1b-5, Luke 23:6-12, Mark 15:6-
15).
Jesus survived painful beating, whipping, and mocking
(Mark 15:16-20).
Pilate tried to compromise with the
religious leaders by having Jesus beaten,
but this act didn't satisfy them. Pilate
handed Jesus over to be crucified (Mark
15:6-15).
Jesus was mocked by the soldiers as they dressed Him in a purple robe
and a crown of thorns (John 19:1-3).
Jesus was crucified on Golgotha, which means the Place of the Skull
(Mark 15:22).
The sky turned dark for three hours (Mark 15:33).
Jesus cried, "Father! Into your hands I commit my spirit!" and He died
•Christians believe that there is only one God, but
that he is revealed in three different forms:
•God the Father
•God the Son
•The Holy Spirit
•The Bible itself reveals those doctrines that are
essential to the Christian faith. They are 1) the
Deity of Christ, 2) Salvation by Grace, 3)
Resurrection of Christ, 4) the gospel,
and 5) monotheism.
• The central teachings of traditional Christianity are that Jesus
is the Son of God, the second person of the Trinity of God
the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit; that his life on earth,
his crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension into heaven are
proof of God's love for humanity and God's forgiveness of
human sins; and that by faith in Jesus one may attain
salvation and eternal life (see creed). This teaching is
embodied in the Bible, specifically in the New Testament, but
Christians accept also the Old Testament as sacred and
authoritative Scripture.
• Christian ethics derive to a large extent from the Jewish tradition
as presented in the Old Testament, particularly the Ten
Commandments, but with some difference of interpretation
based on the practice and teachings of Jesus. Christianity may be
further generally defined in terms of its practice of corporate
worship and rites that usually include the use of sacraments and
that are usually conducted by trained clergy within organized
churches. There are, however, many different forms of worship,
many interpretations of the role of the organized clergy, and
many variations in polity and church organization within
Christianity.
Followers of Christianity?
•Christians model themselves on the life and teachings of
Jesus Christ. Jesus taught people to love God and love their
neighbour.
• Right Reverend Riah in St Michael-le-BelfreyMany Christians
worship in churches. Some groups meet in homes and other
buildings. 'Church' means the gathering of Christians as well
as the building in which Christians worship.
• Their leaders are called priests or ministers.
•The Catholic Church teaches that it is the one
true church founded by Jesus Christ, that its
bishops are the successors of Christ's
apostles, and that the pope is the successor
to Saint Peter. The Catholic Church maintains
that the doctrine on faith and morals that it
declares as definitive is infallible
• True to form as an excellent religion journalist,
has brought attention to efforts to follow Jesus
without calling oneself a "Christian." Non-
Christian Christ-followers even seem to have some
scripture on their side. The first name of the Jesus
movement in the book of Acts is "followers of the
Way." There are plenty of other fully-biblical
alternatives: disciples, apostles, friends of God.
Thankyou and
god bless 
