1. Culture in the digital age
For this project, we were told to create a short documentary for BBC (British Broadcasting
Corporation) Three specificallyaimedatthe age group between15 – 25-year-olds;generationZ.the
brief mainlyconsisted of informationincludingwhattype of product the BBC are lookingfor, howto
find our targeted audience, deadline, and what the whole project itself should consist of.
To startof thisjourneythroughthe projectIhadtofindoutwhowere myaudience isandhow Iwould
be able totargetthemspecifically.Icreatedsurveysaboutdifferentdocumentarygenresmyaudience
wouldprefertowatchand the type of themesthatwouldinterestthemthe most.Once Ihad an idea
of whatmydocumentarycouldbeabout (serialkillers,darkmurders,socialmedia),Ibegantodoquite
a lot of research about the most suggested topics. I read various articles and essaysfrom university
students/professionals, then began to extract notes and information from them to create my
rationale.
Afterthat, I was leadingintomyproductionside of the project, aka my recording. With thisstage of
the project,I struggledwitha couple of things.Forexample,how tofindreliablecast,locationasthe
weatherhas a significantimpactonit and scheduling.Whentryingtoschedule timesforrecordingit
can be complicatedattimes, asnot everyone hasthe same free time orbreakas othersandtryingto
bookspecificroomsforscenesastheycan be busyfromhours to days.Onlytime Ihad difficultywith
this, iswhenI had to do my voiceoverforsome scenes. The reasonforwhythishappenedisbecause
the studio was booked for weeks at a time therefore,I could not record a huge part in this short
documentary.Onthe otherhand,whenshootingthe acting scenes,itwaseasierto achieve thanthe
voiceovers. Due to weather complications, I was able to shoot the scenes indoors in a professional
recordingstudioin SunderlandBede College.Iuseda blackbackground and a couple of studiolights
to create a dark and serious effect to make my targeted audience intrigued and curious on what is
going to happen.
Overall, with this project, I have learned the positives and negatives on how to create a short
documentary.Forexample, the positivesare thatIhave learntthe stylesof documentariesandIknow
howto create ashort documentaryonlow budget.Thishasalsogivenme professionalpractise asthis
can helpme inthe future withdifferentorsimilartypesof projects.Ihave alsoenhanced myskillsat
editing footage on the software Premier Pro. This is shown by being able to separate my audio and
footage from each other on different rows on the timeline, being able to alter hues, saturations,
contrasts etc, and stitching clips together.
Inconclusion,myshortdocumentaryturnedouttobe okayasIcouldnoteditthefull10to15 minutes
due to loosingfootage andsoftware'snotworkingat times.Eventhoughit couldhave beenbetter,I
did a decent job with editing as well as recording in my opinion.
