2. Opportunity and out of necessity
• Delivering groceries at home was already out there in the market but due to
COVID-19, the business picked up and Walmart being one of the biggest retailers
also started its own delivery program.
3. How does it work?
• You go to walmart.ca or Walmart app and order what you want, you can make
changes while they are still picking your order. They will also find substitutes for
the products that you have ordered and are not available in store now and they
will ask for your confirmation, you can accept or decline the substitute. They pick
and deliver themselves and they have also partnered with Instacart. A customer
can also pick their order from the store.
4. Continuity on large scale for a long time
• Home delivery of grocery is going to be a thing even after the end of COVID-19
but it might not be as booming as it is now. As people are going to want to go out
and shop. Though a considerable amount of people will remain regulars and the
ones who just went to pick up their orders can be consistent.
5. Everything Self-Checkout
• Recently Walmart has started the trial for going self-checkout only in the store
i.e., no cashiers, only machines that accept both cards and cash. There are going
to be associates to help the customers when they need help but that’s it.
6. What will this do?
What will it do for the company?
• Machine will be taking over all the Labour hours and hence a lot of people will be
out of jobs.
• Cost cutting for the company as they don’t have to pay all those associates. The
machine costs will be high but as they are a onetime investment it should not
be much big a deal.
7. What will happen next?
• It will be a concern for those who are employed in that position, if they go
everything self-checkout in all stores.
• It is time for people to think how can they be relevant in the age where
technology can do almost everything they can and even better with few errors.
They must make sure that technology acts as a supplement.
