3. Radio Industry
The "radio industry" is a generic term for any companies
or public service providers who are involved with the
broadcast of radio stations or ancillary services.
Radio broadcasters can be broken into at least two
different groups:
Public service broadcasters are funded in whole or in part
through public money. This may be through money
received directly from the government, or, as in the UK,
through a license fee. The license fee is typically
protected by law and set by the government, and is
required for any household which contains equipment
which can be used to receive a TV signal.
Commercial broadcasters (also called Independent Local
Radio in the UK) are largely funded through the sales of
advertising spots on their radio station. Commercial
stations are often quite local, and may have some public
service commitments within their permit.
4. Television Industry
Public television broadcasting started in the
United Kingdom in 1936, and now has a
collection of free and subscription services over
a variety of distribution media, through which
there are over 480 channels[nb 1] for consumers as
well as on-demand content. There are six main
channel owners who are responsible for most
viewing. There are 27,000 hours of domestic
content produced a year at a cost of £2.6 billion.
[nb 2]
Analogue terrestrial transmissions are
currently being switched off and this is due to be
completed in 2012.
5. Print Industry
Printing permeates everyday life
and is central to most business
operations—from packaging to
advertising, from books to
periodicals, and from currency to
wallpaper.
6. Advertising & Marketing
Industry
The marketing, advertising, and public relations
industry covers a range of functions from the
technical elements of market research to the
more creative product/brand development,
promotion, media relations, reputation
management, public affairs, direct marketing
and sponsorship. Digital roles (creative, design
and production) are increasing significantly.
Marketing budgets, particularly social-media
budgets, are increasing again as the global
recession eases, and opportunities are available
for graduates with exceptional communication
skills, organisational skills and creative flair.

news, gossip, sport, etc.
