 He was baptized in the Parian Catholic church in June
1697 at the age of 35 and moved to Biñan Laguna
became a prosperous farmer and a good Chinese
community leader and married to Inez de la Rosa who
was half of his younger.
Rizal s parents
Don Francisco Mercado – an educated farmer, philosophy
and Latin graduated from Manila.
Teodora Alonzo-Mercado – was a well-known intelligent,
courteous, business minded and religious.
Overview of Rizal s Education
 His education of Rizal started at home with his first
teacher. He started his formal education in Biñan and
later to Manila and abroad.
 The world was open to Rizal through his own mother.
 At the age of three he learned the alphabet. Studied at
Binan to study under Maestro Justiano Cruz. At eight
wrote his first literary piece- a poem. Sa Aking Mga
Kababata.
 Moved to Manila and enrolled at Ateneo Municipal de
Manila.

de Madrid at 23.
 This university granted him the degree, Licentiate in
Medicine.
 In the year that followed he finished the degree,
Philosophy and letters with a grade of excellent.
Childhood Memories
 Rizal had good memories of his childhood days in
Calamba. He grew up a pios Catholic owing to the
training provided his mother. At 3 yrs old he learned
how to pray and even read the bible. He learned
the value of scholarship and intellectual honesty.
At the age of four , Rizal experienced his first
sorrow. This was when his younger sister
Concepcion, with whom he fondly called Concha
died. As a young boy. He spent many hours down
the shore of Laguna….so it can be noted that he
was a good observer, noting he was a good
observer. These observations of Rizal had an
impact of his political and social ideas later.
Early Demonstration of Inborn Talents
- The young Rizal also showed his knack in
sketching, painting, sculpture, and literature.
Acc. to Romero (1978). The panoramic beauty
of Calamba, Rizal‘s admiration of his mother
led him to home his skills in the aforementioned
art forms. At 8 years old he was able to write a
poem.
- The above poem clearly reveals that Rizal,
even his tender had a concept of nationalism,
Here, he associated love for the native
language bestowed by God with the desire of
the freedom, which acc to him was on
mortgage . As a young boy he was already
aware that his people had his own language,
just like other languages, had his own alphabet,
writing, which acc to Rizal disappeared
because they were swallowed up by tidal
waves. So, here we can see a young lad
describing his native language, or Tagalog as
comfortable to Latin, and Spanish,
The First Taste of Injustice
 As a young boy Rizal witnessed how his town
mates were tortured, treated rudely brutally by
Spanish officials and the Guardia Civil. In fact, he
spent a lot of thinking why the people had to
suffer such brutality and unfair treatment. An
incident, which opened his eyes to the injustice of
the regime was the arrest and incarceration of his
mother in 1871 due to her alleged complicity in
the attempted murder of his uncle s wife ( Jose
Aberto.)
 Another incident that greatly influenced Rizal s
goal and life work was the martyrdom of
Gomburza ( Capino, 1977)
 If it were not for the unjust execution of three
priests, Rizal would have been a member of
Jesuits in the Phils. The influence of the
aforementioned event was evident in his
dedication of the El Fiibusterismo to the memory
of Gomburza
.
Preparation for Formal Schooling
 Rizal’ s first teacher Dona Teodora discovered that
Rizal had an aptitude in poetry.
 Rizal’s first private tutor was Maestro Celestino,
followed by Maestro Lucas Padua
 The third tutor however was Leon Monroy where Rizal’
s skill in reading, writing, and the rudiments of Latin
honed
 Just like other children from the principalia class, was
trained to become a middle –class intellectual or
illustrado.
 First he was subjected to education under private
tutors.
 Then he was sent to a private secondary school and
went to a university for a college degree and
completed studies in Europe.
Literary Works at Ateneo
 Rizal was able to produce a number of poems.
 My First Inspiration
 In Memory of My Town (1876)
 To The Child Jesus (when he was 14 yrs old)
 Through Education The country Receives Light
 The Intimate Alliance Between Religion and Good
Education
Influences of Schooling at Ateneo on Rizal :
- Rizal was conferred the degree of Bachiller en Artes on
March 23,1877, From being a boy, Rizal was transformed
into a mature individual-as individual basically Jesuit in
form and orientation. For five years, Rizal was able to
imbibe the Jesuit values of fairness, justice, and
reason(Capino, 1977). As a consequence his
internalization of the aforementioned values of the Jesuit
school, the quest of justice, equality and dignity became
his lifetime work.

Continuation of the Topic:
 This story left a deep impression on Rizal. For
Rizal the moth died a victim of illusion in its
search for the light. Nevertheless, he came to
realize the sweetness of dying in search for the
light, This story can be a considered as Rizals
biography. Just like the moth that died a victim
of illusion. Rizal died a martyr in search of the
lights of truth, freedom and justice. From the
story, Rizal came to realize that one has to
sacrifice and to suffer the consequence of one
‘s action for the attainment of a goal.
