Rizal was influenced by many people during his childhood who helped develop his talents and intellect. His uncle Tio Jose encouraged his artistic abilities, while Tio Manuel helped strengthen his body through exercise. Tio Gregorio intensified Rizal's love of reading good books. Rizal also received tutelage from Maestro Celestino, Maestro Lucas Padua, and Leon Monroy who taught him Spanish and Latin. As a student, Rizal excelled in Ateneo de Manila where he received several medals and graduated with highest honors at age 16. He then studied philosophy and letters at University of Santo Tomas, winning several literary laurels, but found the environment suffocating

Term 1878-1879, Rizal received
the Ateneo Rector's advice
(Father Pablo Ramon) study
medicine.
Another reason he want to study
medicine is because he wanted
to be a physician so that he
could cure his mother's failing
eyes.
During Rizal's first school term
in the UST (1877-1878), Rizal also
studied in Ateneo. He took the
vocational course leading to the
title expert surveyor.
