2. WHAT IS PINK EYE?
Conjunctivitis, more commonly
known as pink eye, refers to
inflammation of the conjunctiva.
This is the clear, thin layer that
covers the front surface of the
eyes and lines the inside of the
eyelids. This inflammation causes
small blood vessels in the eyes to
expand, causing the whites of the
eyes to appear pink or light red.
3. CAUSES AND SYMPTOMS
OF CONJUNCTIVITIS
Conjunctivitis can be caused by several
different things:
An Allergic Reaction
A Foreign Object in the Eye
Dirty Contact Lenses
Viral Infections
Bacteria
The symptoms of conjunctivitis include the
following:
Red Eye
Itchiness
Tearing
Crusting
4. WHEN TO SEE A DOCTOR
While most cases of
conjunctivitis will clear up on
their own, see a doctor if you’re
also experiencing pain, blurred
vision, sensitivity to light, if your
symptoms don’t improve within
a couple of days, or if you have a
weakened immune system due
to an underlying illness, such as
lupus, cancer, HIV, or hepatitis.
5. CONJUNCTIVITIS
DIAGNOSIS & TREATMENT
Your doctor will be able to diagnose
conjunctivitis by taking a look at
your eyes. If you wear contact
lenses, do not wear them until your
condition improves. Your doctor
may prescribe eye drops if the
condition was caused by bacteria.
6. COMPLICATIONS OF
CONJUNCTIVITIS
If you don’t take measures
to alleviate symptoms of
conjunctivitis, it could result in
inflammation of the cornea, also
known as keratitis; a condition that
can affect your vision.
7. RISK FACTORS
The following factors put you at risk
for getting conjunctivitis:
You are exposed to someone
who has it.
You wear contact lenses.
You are prone to pink eye.
You suffer from allergies.
8. CONJUNCTIVITIS PREVENTION
There are measures you can take to
prevent pink eye:
Avoid rubbing your eyes
Wash your hands regularly
Change your pillowcases regularly
Do not share makeup or cosmetics
Throw away cosmetics and eye
makeup if you’ve already been sick
Do not share towels
