4. The Forgiving Crocodile
A Localized Story Book
RATIONALE
Facilitating the teaching-learning process in English must be
productive. Pupils must be in a learning environment of play, with hidden
agenda of learning. They must be put into a situation of a relaxed and
stress-free environment for them to learn better- an environment where
they feel comfortable.
In line with the foregoing statements, most pupils today have difficulty
in understanding the lessons in English especially in terms of
comprehension. While it is true that English concepts are not easily
learned, much difficulty is expected from a learner who considers English a
burden to his studies and feels dislike about it. Thus, the teacher’s primary
concern in teaching English is to develop learners’ appreciation of the
subject and make reading an everyday habit.
In addition, learning English must be fun and exciting. To make it more
enjoyable, engaging and challenging, the use of contextualized textbook
with interesting stories and colorful illustrations could be of great help.
This provides a meaningful real life experience that motivates pupils to
pursue and make English lessons part of their lives.
For the aforementioned reasons, the story book in English which was
crafted by the author will be used as an instructional material to enhance
pupils’ reading comprehension which is one of the least mastered
competencies in English. Pupils can comprehend better when stories are
written within their local context. This led the author to localize and
contextualize an English story book that will cater the identified least
mastered competencies which include noting details, inferring feelings of
character, sequencing events, giving possible ending, and predicting
outcomes.
Also, this story book innovation will sustain the interest of the pupils to
achieve higher learning outcomes and develop 21st century skills for them
to become better citizens for the country.
