EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY
2. WHAT IS EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY?
Educational technology is the study
and ethical practice of facilitating
learning and improving performance
by creating, using and managing
appropriate technological processes
and resources.
It includes, but is not limited to, software, hardware as well as
Internet applications and activities.
3. The use of technology in the process of
learning and teaching has improved the way
in which students learn throughout the years.
Have a look at the influence of
technology in education…
5. Early schools adopt the teacher/manager model
with the teacher as the primary manager of
instruction and assessment in a single classroom.
6. 1941 - ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and
Computer) The first vacuum tube-based computers
developed; universities help in computer
development effort; technology used in war effort.
7. Instructional television was the focus of attention during the
1950s and the 1960s.
Bing Crosby Enterprises (BCE), gave the world’s first
demonstration of a videotape recording in Los Angeles on
November 11, 1951.
8. 1980s - The appearance of microcomputers, that many educators and
public officials became enthusiastic about computers.
By January 1983, computers were being used for instructional purposes
in 40 percent of all elementary schools and 75 percent of all secondary
schools in the United States
1985 - A single CD could store an entire encyclopedia plus video and
audio. The CD-ROM and eventually the CD-RW paved the way for
flash drives and easy personal storage.
9. 1990 - Multimedia PCs are developed; schools are using videodiscs; object-
oriented multimedia authoring tools are in wide use; Simulations,
educational databases and other types of Computer Assisted Instruction
(CAI) programs are being delivered on CD-ROM disks, many with animation
and sound.
1999 - The chalkboard got a facelift with the whiteboard. That got turned
into a more interactive system that uses a touch-sensitive white screen
10. 1996 - The internet begins to provide services and advertising
using web pages. Many schools install web servers and provide
faculty with a way to create instructional web pages.
1997-2007 - The growth of the internet expands far faster than
most predicted. It soon becomes the worlds largest database of
information, graphics, and streaming video making it an
invaluable resource for educators.
11. 2009 – Introduction of the fully automated classroom.
Rather than facing the usual blackboard, students instead found themselves in
front of a wall-sized LCD display on which words were typed in perfect, readable
English at a predetermined pace to allow for ease of note taking. Additionally,
graphs and diagrams could be displayed in a clear form, as well as pictures, and
even three-dimensional images depicting real-world applications. Coupled with
this visual representation was a digital audio recording of the day's lecture.
Students were able to take notes, as well as complete quizzes and tests by
means of a personalized notepad, each equipped with handwriting recognition
software calibrated to the individual student, eliminating the problems of messy
assignments. Also, with the touch of a button, notes could be downloaded to the
student's computer at home.
12. 2010 – The internet is accessed entirely through
wireless, handheld, pocket computers.
It will be more and more important in classrooms through
the following years…
