3. CHOW-CHOW(Chayote)
Introduction and importance:
●It belongs to the subtribe Sicyinae C.jeffer, tribe sicyeae, sub family
cucurbitoideae.
● The genus was considered to be monospecific, but currently eight species,
all distributed in Central America.
● One species edule is widely cultivated.
● Sachium edule is a perennial , with large tuberous roots.
● The fruits , tubers, roots seed and leaves have long been used by native
Americans.
● Fruits are fleshy and pyriform with single seed in it.
● Majorly this is used as vegetables and even in medicine use, as it rich in
calcium, and also good for bones.
4. CHOW-CHOW(Chayote)
• Synonyms: Chayote, choko, askas.
• S.N: Sechium edule.
• Chromosome.no: 2n=28.
• Family: cucurbitaceae.
• Origin: Mexico.
• Single seeded fruit in cucurbits.
• Most nutritious among cucurbits.
5. • Herbaceous perennial, Monoecious, climbing vine.
• High calcium content.
• Propagation : sprouted fruits.
• Perennial.
• Grown in higher elevation.
• Variations in fruit shape, colour and cultivars like
round white, long white, pointed green, broad green,
oval green
6. Soil and climate:
• Grows well in loose, well drained soil high in organic matter.
• Optimum PH- 5.5-6.5.
• Sprouted fruits are planted at a depth of 2/3rd of its length in prepared holes.
• These sprouted fruits should not be stored under < 10 degree Celsius.
• Spacing of 2 × 3.5m.
• Support is given to the plant by poles and trellis.
Sowing :
• Planting is done in pits or basin.
• 45- 60cm diameter which is spaced at 1.8×2.4m.
8. Nutrient management:
• 10-15 kg cattle manure per pit is added.
• FYM- 10-15 t/ha.
• NPK: as recommended by VNMKV 100:50:50 Kg NPK/ha is added.
• Frequent hoeing and weeding is done.
• Harvesting and yield:
• Under Bangalore condition fruiting is all round the year.
• Well grown plant yields 500-600 fruits/ plant.
• The fruit weight is 200-450g.
• In North East India fruits size is bigger.
• Yield : 20-25t/ha.
