Diseases of rose: Crown Gall Rot, Black Spot, Powdery mildew of Rose, Rust and Anthracnose. Besides rose diseases, environmental factors can effect your plants too, and they should be watched for an remedied when found. To keep most rose diseases under control, a commercial fungicide will take care of it. In other cases, proper pruning techniques and the maintenance of clean garden implements goes a long way in preventing such conditions from occurring in the first place. I have found that only two sprays are needed to keep your plants healthy. The first is sulpher. This will work for most of the diseases. But not for black-spot: for this you need Capstan.

2. Crown Gall Rot
• C:O Agrobacterium rhizogenes
• Class: Proteobacteria
• Family: Rhizobiaceae

3. Symptoms
• Large lumps at the base of plant stem or on
roots.
• Gall appear on the stem as the disease
progress.
• Galls are soft compared to surrounding plant
tissues.

• Young affected plant will not bloom.
• All affected plants wilt readily and grow
poorly.

6. Black Spot
• C:O Diplocarpon rosae
• (Syn: Marssonina rosae)
• Class: Leotiomycetes
• Family: Helotiales

7. Symptoms
• The irregular edged circular spots with with a
yellow halo.
• Leaves turn yellow and fall early.
• Defoliation….. Weakness…. Death
• Reduction in plant vigor.

9. Powdery mildew of Rose
• C:O Podosphaera pannosa
• Symptoms: Fine, powdery coating on buds
and leaves.
• Infected buds/leaves…… retarded growth.
• Infected buds fail to open.

10. Spread
• Hot and humid weather.
• Fungal spores overwinter on stems and fallen
leaves.

11. Rust
• C:O Phragmidium mucronatum
• Symptoms: Yellow patches on the surface of
leaves, with orange pustules of spores
underneath the leaf.
• Defoliation
• Spread: Wind

13. Anthracnose
• C:O Sphaceloma rosarum
• Black Spots with a very defined edge.
• As the spots enlarge the centre becomes gray
• Fall out resulting in a shot-hole appearance.
