Improvement in energy efficiency
1. Improvement in energy efficiency in street lighting system
STREET LIGHTING
Street lighting in most of the municipalties. in India is poor maintained
and energy inefficient.
India, generates about 1,00.000 MV as per the present statistics. About
17-20 % of which was used for the lighting systems, which operated at 220v Ac
at so Hz Power shortages occur to the extent of nearly 10% which for certain
cities, lead to a peaking shortfall of 30% during the summer months. Because of
the reduced lamp life and frequent lamp replacement, 0 & M costs is increases,
also because of the poor & inefficient design of the lighting system cause the
over burden on the sick municipalties. Efficiently designed street lighting
enables the driver to see distinctly without the use of dipped or driving
headlights and helps 10 locate any traffic signs and possible obstacles on the
road with out much difficulty.
There are very few municipalities with metering facilities for street
lighting consumption, they pay the bill to respective SEB, this creates revenue
loss to SEB & increases 0 & M for municipalties. But the street lighting load
will be considered by considering only the voltage of lamp & no.of fittings and
they do not consider losses in the chokes, distribution lines & distributions
transformers.
The main reasons for the poor and inefficient design of the street lighting. '
Poor and inefficient design of the struct lighting
Detection of energy inefficient equipment
Poor designing practices of street lighting

2. Improvement in energy efficiency in street lighting system
Poor power quality.
Higher O & M cost
Lack of skilled labour.
Strategies for improving efficiency of street lighting.
Technological advancement
e.g. use of photo volatic solar panel:
This photo volatic solar panel stores energy at day time and this stored energy
is used at night time therefore pouer requirement is reduced and there bv
increases the efficiency of the system.
Amravati municipal corporation is going to adopting photo volatic solar pannel
system. Planting solar pannel at the top each street light pole and providing
small rechargeable battery and inverter. An autoswitch can also be introduced
in the ckt, Which will operate between solar battery and supply from MSEB.
Thus in the event of failure of battery street lights can be put on from MSEB
supply.
Low loss chokes or electronic balnsts : eg. Following table shows the
advantages of electronic balast and how total unit is minimised & at reduced
cost efficiency will be increases of the system.

3. Improvement in energy efficiency in street lighting system
S.No. Parameters With Copper Choke With Electronic Balast
1. Power Consumed at 240V. 56 Watts 30 Watt
2. Power Consumed in Watts * hrs * days 50 * 12 Watt * hrs * days 30 *
a month assuming 12 * 30 - 20160 V. i.e. 20 12 * 30 - 10*00 W.i.e.
Hrs. tube working. units. 1 1 unit
-i Electrical bill per month No. of units * Rate 20 * No. of units * Rate = 1
Rs. 4.5- Rs.90 1 * Rs.4.5 = Rs. 49.5
4. Saving per tube per Rs. 40.5
month.
High lumen tubes.
Low wattage lamps for the same lux level.
Energy efficient luminaries
Automatic street lighting scheme.
The lux levels on the street can be determined based on
Type of the road
Number of streets.
Number of driving lanes, and

4. Improvement in energy efficiency in street lighting system
Width of the driving lanes.
Based on the above parameters, the desired lux levels can be actieved
by properly designed the following
Luminarie spacing
Luminarie mounting height
Overhang and outreach of luminarie.
It is generally observed the lolloping parameters contribute to low lighting levels
on the street.
Improper pole to pole spacing.
Inadequate or higher mounting heighi.
Interruptions due to roadside trees.
Poor maintenance of the lamps.
Automatic on / off operation of street lights using LDR circuit.

5. Improvement in energy efficiency in street lighting system
CONCLUSION
Thus by implementing above technological advancement improvement in
energy efficiency in municipal system can be achieved effectively, technological
advancement.
