The music was consumed through things such as radio , TV
and through live performance’s but also vinyl.
Genre’s such as “Rock no Roll” became popular through
artists such as Elvis Presley
The rebellious nature of the music and the artists
themselves appealed to the teenagers who wanted to go
against their parents and wanted to be cool. Elvis’s spin on
the genre was taken from the blues of the black people. He
was then seen as the “Wiggery” by many critic’s which
created a hatred towards the artist from the parents as they
would have been in a generation where being racist was
okay and was the norm.
3. 1960’s
The 60’s saw the birth of “Rock n Roll” Bands such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones. The focus
band will be The Beatles.
The Beatles became popular due to the originality
Beatniks- It was a media stereotype in the mid 1960s which was displayed in the Beat generation. It
starts in the late 1950’s but their success didn’t come until the 1960’s. This form of a group fan base is
still seen in the 21st century in artists such as Lady GaGa , Justin Beiber and many more.
The British invasion was a phenomenon that occurred in the mid-1960’s when rock and pop music
acts from the UK aswell as British culture became popular in the USA and the world.
In 1962 , The Beatles became signed in March
Their music promoted the use of drugs and linked in with the craze at the time of the “hippies” as they
believed that a person see’s clearly through the influence of drugs. This influenced the teenagers
listening to the music as they now rebelled and started to use drugs.
The first artists which showed their lyrics. This is due to the values of the Beatles as they believed the
audience should take away with them the message they are giving them rather than just listen to the
music, this would make them think about the issues raised through the lyrics.
4. 1970’s
During this period Margret Thatcher was prime minister
of the UK. During her rein of power she shutdown the
factories and coal mines . She wanted the country to be
based around “Suit and tie” jobs which is orientated
around the office.

6. 1990’s
Grunge started to get popular during the late 1980’s and continued to be popular in the early 1990’s. It was popular
because teenagers were angry and depressed. This made it very popular with the underground scene.
Singers such as Kurt Cobain lead singer of Nirvana, The Seattle.
They were influenced a lot by bands such as The Beatles as Kurt Cobain struggled in his addiction of heroin . Another
factor which influenced him was Buddhism.
However Grunge started to decrease in popularity due to teenagers rebelling and being tired of feeling depressed and
listening to that sort of music and wanted something up beat.
Hip hop is another genre which started in the late 80’s but got its influences from disco from the 1970’s. In the 1990’s is
where hip hop started to blossom through artists such as “Tupac, B.I.G, NWA”
The hip hop group “NWA” spoke about their anger towards the police and the corruption within the system. They felt that
they didn’t have a voice. One police department which is the LAPD who wrongly beat a black man.
During this time Britain elected Tony Blair as the new prime minister and help to improve the education, economical and
political systems of the country.

Due to the introduction of the internet music is heavily
consumed through the internet. This has lead to an increase
in piracy in illegal downloads.
YouTube- A platform where people can share and upload
their own video’s. This was a good way for the big
companies to advertise their products etc.
The genres which were very popular are Garage, Hip hop
and R and B.
After the 9/11 incident it increased the popularity of the blues
as people wanted to remember the disaster and help
comfort them emotionally.
