The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite-based navigation system consisting of 24 satellites orbiting the Earth at an altitude of 20,200 km with an inclination angle of 55 degrees. GPS provides positioning and time information to users with GPS receivers. It was developed by the United States Department of Defense in the 1970s and became fully operational in 1993. The Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) is India's independent regional geolocation system, consisting of 7 satellites - 3 in geostationary orbit and 4 in geosynchronous orbit. It provides accurate real-time positioning and timing services over India and regions extending 1,500 km from its boundaries.
