Dear Parent/Carer
Here is an outline of Upper Primary’s learning for this session’s final term. We have moved and are
now settling well in to our new classroom! We have the opportunity to share space, activities and
resources with the Lower Primary next door when the partition is opened, allowing pupils to work in
different groups as appropriate. Importantly, it will hopefully help to create a smooth transition
for next session’s new classes.
In Language, homework reading now takes place on Mondays and Wednesdays. Group reading this
term will include fiction and non-fiction texts. Spelling homework will continue weekly on
Wednesdays, with different challenges given. There will be a whole school focus on learning about
and writing newspaper reports. Topic work will include writing activities, and in addition, pupils will
use our new comprehension resources. Mr Pietri will teach French once weekly, and we will carry on
using conversational French during class routines where possible.
In Maths, we will again begin by revising work from last term. Areas covered this term will be
position, movement and angle. We will revise all number, measure, shape and data work done over
the year and extend work on fractions and decimals where appropriate to e.g. percentage.
Homework will usually be handed out and submitted on Mondays.
To begin with we will be continuing Science activities as our class topic. They will cover buoyancy,
friction, electricity and magnetism, light and sound, and energy. Towards the end of term it is
hoped the primary classes will work as a whole on a new, yet to be finalised, topic. We will continue
to work on ideas such as this to ease the transition between different classes for all pupils.
In Health and Wellbeing/Religious and Moral Education there will be a whole school focus on
‘Emotional Wellbeing’. We are working on recognising and celebrating achievement. In addition, we
will be sharing ideas on how to deal with different situations, thinking about our moral values. Some
pupils have their last Fun 5z netball trip to Kirkwall so we will be practising for this during the first
week. Daily tooth-brushing will continue for pupils where consent has been provided. Our Junior
Road Safety Officers will continue to plan and lead sessions for nursery and primary pupils on
ensuring everyone equips themselves with good knowledge and attitudes when travelling. P5-7
pupils will receive weekly cycle training on Monday afternoons. Please ensure bikes and helmets are
in good working order and are brought in weekly.
Finally, pupils will have regular lessons with our Music, Art and PE specialists.
