Hypothesis Testing
A statistical hypothesis is a conjecture about a
population parameter. This conjecture may or may
not be true.
Three methods used to test hypotheses:
1. The traditional method
2. The P-value method
3. The confidence interval method
2 BUS216
Steps in Hypothesis Testing-
Traditional Method
 The null hypothesis, symbolized by H0, is a
statistical hypothesis that states that there is no
difference between a parameter and a specific
value, or that there is no difference between two
parameters.
 The alternative hypothesis is symbolized by Ha.
 The alternative hypothesis, symbolized by H1, is
a statistical hypothesis that states the existence of
a difference between a parameter and a specific
value, or states that there is a difference between
two parameters.
3 BUS216
Types of Tests:
Right-tailed Test
1 H :   36
1 H :   78
1 H :   82
0 H :   82
Left-tailed Test
0 H :   36
Two-tailed test
0 H :   78
4 BUS216
Hypothesis Testing
 In reality, the null hypothesis may or may not be
true, and a decision is made to reject or not to
reject it on the basis of the data obtained from a
sample.
 A type I error occurs if one rejects the null
hypothesis when it is true. (α)
 A type II error occurs if one does not reject the
null hypothesis when it is false. (β)
5 BUS216
Hypothesis Testing
6 BUS216
Hypothesis Testing
 The critical value, C.V., separates the critical region
from the noncritical region.
 The critical or rejection region is the range of values
of the test value that indicates that there is a
significant difference and that the null hypothesis
should be rejected.
 The noncritical or nonrejection region is the range
of values of the test value that indicates that the
difference was probably due to chance and that the
null hypothesis should not be rejected.
7 BUS216
Hypothesis Testing
Finding the Critical Value for α = 0.01 (Left-Tailed Test)
z
Because of symmetry,
z = -2.33 for α = 0.01 (Left-Tailed Test)
8 BUS216
Procedure Table
Solving Hypothesis-Testing Problems
(Traditional Method)
Step 1 State the hypotheses and identify the claim.
Step 2 Find the critical value(s) from the
appropriate table in Appendix C.
Step 3 Compute the test value.
Step 4 Make the decision to reject or not reject the
null hypothesis.
Step 5 Summarize the results.
9 BUS216
z Test for a Mean
The z test is a statistical test for the mean of a population.
It can be used when n  30, or when the population is
normally distributed and  is known.
The formula for the z test is
where
= sample mean


X
z

n

X
μ = hypothesized population mean
 = population standard deviation
n = sample size
10 BUS216
Hypothesis Testing
The P-value (or probability value) is the probability of
getting a sample statistic (such as the mean) or a more
extreme sample statistic in the direction of the
alternative hypothesis when the null hypothesis is true.
Test Value
11 BUS216
P-Value
P-value approach
Make the decision.
Since the P-value is less than 0.05, the decision is
to reject the null hypothesis.
Note: If α = 0.01, the null hypothesis would not be rejected.
If p-value > α, do not reject the Null
If p-value < α, reject the Null
12 BUS216
t Test for a Mean
The t test is a statistical test for the mean of a population
and is used when the population is normally or
approximately normally distributed, α is unknown.
The formula for the t test is


X
t

s n
The degrees of freedom are d.f. = n – 1.
Note: When the degrees of freedom are above 30 you
should round down to the nearest table value. This is a
conservative approach.
13 BUS216
Whether to use z or t
14 BUS216
z Test for a Proportion
Since a normal distribution can be used to approximate
the binomial distribution when np  5 and nq  5, the
standard normal distribution can be used to test
hypotheses for proportions.
The formula for the z test for a proportion is
where
ˆ 

z
pq n
X
ˆ sample proportion

15 BUS216
2 
Test for a Variance or a Standard
Deviation
The chi-square distribution is also used to test a claim
about a single variance or standard deviation.
The formula for the chi-square test for a variance is
  2
2
n 1
s
2



with degrees of freedom d.f. = n – 1 and
n = sample size
s2 = sample variance
2 = population variance
16 BUS216
2
Assumptions for the Test for a
Variance or a Standard Deviation
1. The sample must be randomly selected from
the population.
2. The population must be normally distributed
for the variable under study.
3. The observations must be independent of
one another.
17 BUS216
Additional Topics Regarding
Hypothesis Testing
 There is a relationship between confidence intervals and
hypothesis testing.
 When the null hypothesis is rejected in a hypothesis-testing
situation, the confidence interval for the mean
using the same level of significance will not contain the
hypothesized mean.
 Likewise, when the null hypothesis is not rejected, the
confidence interval computed using the same level of
significance will contain the hypothesized mean.
