The document discusses conventions seen across multiple music videos in the indie folk genre. It finds that the lighting is typically quite dark, costumes are casual clothes, and props are limited mainly to instruments. Shot types vary across videos but often include close-ups and mid shots of performers. Editing uses mainly jump cuts with some videos including slow motion or lighting effects. The sound is non-diegetic music in most cases, sometimes with brief diegetic sound at the start or end.

Indie Folk Music Video Conventions
1.
2. Mise en Scene
The costumes in both the narrative and the performance sections are very casual. T-Shirts and
jeans/trousers are the most common. The props are quite limited, instruments in the performance scenes
and very little in the narrative scenes (Frisbee, surfboard). The location is primarily in a city during the
narrative and on a stage during the performance.
Camera
There is a large variety of shots throughout the video with the majority being mid shots and close ups
during the performance and long shots in the narrative scenes. There are also a number of POV shots
during the narrative.
Editing
The video sticks mostly to standard jump cuts, sticking to the timing of the song. This is especially
noticeable during the chorus. It also appears that during the narrative scenes, either a different camera
was used or the video has been altered slightly to change the colours.
Sound
There is no diegetic sound in the in the video, only the recorded music.
3. Mise en Scene
Mumford & Sons wear suits throughout the video. They are quite light, which contrasts the dark
lighting on most of the roads. The band are wearing blue and white uniforms, again very light
coloured. The band has instruments, mostly acoustic guitars. Excluding the bikes, these are the
only props in the video.
Camera
There is a variety of shot types in the music video, mostly mid shots of Mumford & Sons on the
bikes and the band playing instruments. There are also a number of close ups of the band’s faces
and group shots of the entire band.
Editing
The editing sticks to basic jump cuts, in time with the music, helping the video flow. There is also
slow motion during the bike shots to further help with the timing.
Sound
The start and end of the video feature the diegetic sound of the bikes and a brief bit of dialogue.
When the music is playing, that is all that can be heard.
4. Mise en Scene
The music video is almost entirely performance based and as a result is located on a stage
throughout. The costumes are mainly casual shirts and trousers and the props are limited to
instruments again, primarily acoustic guitar and keyboard. The lighting is quite dark, especially in
the shots of the crowd.
Camera
There is a wide variety of shots in this video with the close ups emphasising the instruments and
singing, long shots and group shots of the band and crowd, and mid shots of Passenger
performing and during the few narrative shots.
Editing
The video sticks mainly to basic jump cuts between shots, in time with the music, with almost no
other editing.
Sound
There is no diegetic sound, only the music.
5. Mise en Scene
The music video doesn’t feature any of the band themselves, only performers. It is set in a
swimming pool and as such all of the costumes are swimming costumes. The only props are the
swimming goggles and arm bands. The lighting is quite bright, mostly natural.
Camera
There are a variety of shots, most of which are group shots of the swimmers performing. There
are also several close-ups of the swimmers as well as occasional long shots.
Editing
The editing is limited to jump cuts in time with the music, with no other effects.
Sound
There is no diegetic sound, only the music.
6. Mise en Scene
The music video is entirely narrative based and is set in a forest and fields. The outfits are very
casual, mainly t-shirts, jeans and sweatshirts. The props are fairly limited as well. Buckets, hay
bales and planks are pretty much all that is used. The lighting is a mixture of light and dark at
different times, dark in the forest and light when in the fields and on the water slide.
Camera
The shots are varied, with the main focus on long shots and mid shots. There are also a number
of POV shots from the perspective of the performers.
Editing
Only jump cuts are used between shots, however there is some slow motion at parts of the video.
It also looks like some of the lighting has been altered in some sections as well.
Sound
There is no diegetic sound, only the music.
7. The lighting in the videos is typically quite dark, especially when inside. There
are generally certain parts of the video that are lighter, however.
The costumes are generally very casual, either t-shirts/shirts and
jeans/trousers or an informal suit. Props are usually fairly limited, often only
instruments.
The shot types are always very varied, with different videos focusing on one
shot type more than the others. Close ups of the performers are quite
commonly seen and mid shots during the performance are almost a guarantee.
The editing of the videos is kept quite simple, only using jump cuts between
different shots, however certain effects are also commonly seen, such as slow
motion or lighting effects.
The sound is almost always non-diegetic, featuring only the pre-recorded
music, however the only exceptions to this are the diegetic sound that is
occasionally heard at the start or end of a music video.
These conventions will help me to plan my music video, to ensure it is as
accurate a representation as possible for the indie folk genre.
