Content –Visual Planning
Before I start planning when andwhere I'm going to shoot –I need to plan what and I'm going to shoot.
This is what I know sofar:
• Thefilm will be 3-5 minutes long (I can't plan too much or too little)
• I will interview various people from pro cyclists, fanatics and fans. (need toplan where, whoand when
for interviews and how they will appear in the film)
• I will focus on my dad (needplan when I shoot him on his bike and his interview)
• Since I'm shooting interviews, I needplan my questions
• Forthe structure, I need towrite ascript, this will be usefulfor my voice-over as well
Themain elements of thesepoints will be notedin thescript: structure, voice-over, people whowill be
interviewed. Theevents and
scenes planned in the script are subject to change. It's adocumentary, I'm working with people, not
characters, everything they
say and do isn't necessarily determined, they might change the courseof thedocumentary.
I will now statemy objectives for theproject, how I want it tolook, feel and operate:
• Thefilm will have a curious nature, from the useof voive-over andstructure
• It will explore why people cycle, the battlebetween man andnature andwhy we put ourselves through
tough environments
• It will engage people whoare interestedin cycling and thosewhoaren't. I will do this by making thefilm
exciting by an enticing
intro.
• Its purposeis to educate people on themindset and cultureof cycling, how it's more than just amodeof
transport, it's morethan just arace, apastime, exercise- it's people's lives.
Script
Like I mentionedin the previous slide the
script will be a working document, it's
subject to change. It gets across the basic
structureandmood. I wrotedown what I'll
probably be saying in the voice-over.
In thissection I describe what I
plan to beshowing visually.
This is what I plan tobe saying in my voice-over
for thefilm.
This part will be hard to shootas we will need to find
a cyclist onthe road.I wantto make the film relatable
forpeople whoaren't cyclists to broadenthe
audience, perhapsthis shot will feel cheap? Silly?
Staged? I may need to considerto do a quick
interview. Or aneven simplier way-when I'm
recordingmy dad, I can shoota bit where a cardrives
past him or whenhe's on a main road. With that shot
and the voice-over,the audinceshould be able to put
it together andthink ofexperineces when they have
questioned whypeople ride their bikes like that. Thelatterhalf of thefilm is stillhazy. I
know how I want to finish it and most
likleyI'lladdsome voice-over to tiethe
film off with a bow.
I'm thinking it to be a littleslower, and
myself (voice-over) summing up what
we've just heard.
Main interview – might changewhen I've
collected allmy footageand reviewed it,
started to make an edit.
Themain intro to thefilm, hopefullyhooking
theaudience.
Will need tofind royalty free music
for this section
Question Sheet
I will be conducting at least twofull interviews. I plan on interviewing someof theriders after therace as they cool down, but theseinterviews will not be formal
set-ups andwill not last long. The two main interviews will be with Mavis Evans andMark Higham.Theone with Higham will be aformal sit-down interview,
three-point lighting etc and theone with Evans will be slightly moreinformal as I will be interviewing her while she is working at the race, so I won't beable to set
up any lighting. The interviewing practise shouldbe the same. I will plan my questions forthe interviewees in theorder that theinterview shouldtakeplace in.
Mavis Evans - interview
As a rule-of-thumb, each question asked totheinterviewee shouldbe repeated in their answer. For example:
Question:What first got you interested in cycling?
Beginning of answer: I first got interested in cycling when....
This shall be statedandpracticed totheinterviewee afew moments beforethe interview officially begins.
Thesheet shall workwith three sections. 1) thequestion that will be asked2) an exampleof how theinterviewee shouldfirst respond, if they have trouble
with this, I can refer them tothe sheet 3) if they don't get tothe core of what I want them totell me, I can be moredirect with thesepromps, if needed. This
also helps if the interviewee doesn't understandthequestion.
Question: Beginning of answer: The core of the question:
Where are weand why are you here? I am inWalsall... assisting in... Set the scene forwhere we are and whatyou are doing here.
How didyou first become involed in the cycling
world? Where did this interest/obsession come
from?
I first became a cycling fan when... Giveus your story, tell us wherethis came from.
Giveus a nice, relatable story.
Why do you think people put themselves through
brutal races from pros totheeveryday cycling fan?
I think thesepeople put themselves through brutal
races as....
Try and tellus thecore of thecycling obsession, thinkback
to allthe crazy pros you've met, what you've seen. You're
probablythemost qualified person to answer this with all
your experience, why?
Question Sheet
Mark Higham- interview
Question: Beginning of answer: The core of the question:
- Introduceyourself whoare you, how old are you? I'm MarkHigham, I'm 47-years-old.... A quick intro towhowe're talking to, this is swiftly
followed by thesecond question
- How long have you been a cycling fan and where
did this obsession first come from?
I'vebeen a cycling fan for.....
I first got intocycling by....
Groundyourself as a fan whoknows what they're
talking about. Show off. Be interesting.
-What races have you been involed in? How many?
Whereabouts? How didyou find them?Which ones
were most memorable?
I'veridden in X races in.... they were.... You'renot just someonewhowatches cycling or
goes on saferides- you activley go andseek the
thrill of racing, all over theworld.
- How haveyou got involed in cycling cultureand
communities?Why dothat?
I'vebeen involved in X cycling club.... doing in.... You'rea member of cycling communities, mention
coaching people. Why dothat?
-Talkabout thehaute route, what was that like?
What is it?
I rode in the hauteroute 2017, thehauterouteis....
it was brutal, exhausting....
Firstly, explain to us what thehauterouteis, bulid it
up.Then talk about your experience with it.Why
did you do it?What appealed to you about it?
-Wouldyou do it again? Why? WouldI doit again... yes/no… it’s theexperience of
a lifetime/it was hard, and I was miserable
Wouldyou put yourself through a brutal bike race
again, why?
-Why cycle at all? Why doany of this? You'vetoldus
about thebrutalitly you willing put yourself through
in thehaute route, the countless bikerides you've
been on.This is more than just asport toyou? Why?
I do it because.... Tell us why you cycle, get personal. Makeit
personal toyou.

Storyboard – Interviews
Shot Description Storyboard
Med Interviewee. Camera on angle, they're facing me,
not looking at camera. Three-point lighting set-up.
Deep focus on his face, bits of backgroundas it will
be shot in his 'bike room' sonice to get bits of that
in theshot, adds tothe cycling theme, shows he
likes cycling. Plus adds more colour to frame,
makes it pop.
Med Vox-pop styleinterview with riders from the race.
Will be handheld as brining thetripod and setting it
up would'vebeen tooinconvenient for theday and
how it functions.
Med Interview with Mavis, handheld. Try andstay as
staticas possible.

I plan on shooting scenes for thefilm on three separate days
at three separate locations.
Thefirst dayis in Walsallat stagetwo of thewomen's
cycling tour of Britian,I will travel light and use onlywhat I
need. I will not havean opportunityto use thelighting, too
heavyand time consuming to setup. The tripod, also too
heavyand not portable,same with thelighting.Instead,I
brought agorillatripod,it'slight and if I need a staticshot,
it's thereto use. Also, will help steadyhandheld camera
movement. A drone won't benecessary either,it's a cycling
event and drones most likelywon't be allowed, could
interfere with therace and be dangerous.
Theinterview with Highamshallbe held to my house, very
easy to transport theequipment and set up. No need for
lighter,exterior, portableequipment such as theequipment
bag, dead cat (for exteriormic work, reduce wind noise) and
gorillatripod.Allshot willbedone using. a tripod,stable
and smooth.I'll beshooting theinterview and B-roll,
cutaway footage.Willhavelaptop onhand in case I need to
refer to anything on thisdocument although I'm
considering printing out a physicalcopy.
On thebikeride, it willtakeplaceoutsidetherefore thereis
no need for lighting kit oreven thegorillatripod and the
dead cat. I mainly need visuals. No sound is particularly
required. I willpredominatelybeusing thedrone, maybe
bring thetripod incase I want some staticshots. He willbe
in motionmost of thetime.

Camera batteries run out Theinterview and any other form of
production will hault
Have allbatteriesfully chargedand ready,
thedaybefore. I have two batteries,that
willlast me. Willalso have thecharging pack
on hand in case needed.
Myself as I am handeling all the
equipment.
SD card corrupts Possibilityoflosing most/allfootage
shot.Wouldhave to reshoot thewhole
film, scheduling in theactors again,
potentiallylooseactorsdueto how
unprofessional it willlookand mess around
theowner of thebarber's shop again.
On lunch break, save all the footage
tomy computer.
Lucas, since I am responsible for all
theequipment.
Battery for the microphone dies Would have to use theinternal
microphonebuilt into thecamera. The
audio willsound severely worse.
I have a secondbattery, will use that. Lucas, since I am responsible for
all the equipment.
Drone runs out of battery Will no longer be able to contineto
film with thedrone
Get all drone footgaefirst,preserve battery,
onlyhave it up in theair whileit's filming
Lucas, since I am responsible
for all the equipment.
Audio problems during interview Potentially ruin theinterview Before interview, make sure everything is
ok.Check theequipment and contineto
checkback during theinterview
Lucas, since I am
responsible for all the equipment.
Organisational n/a n/a n/a
Forget a small pieceof equipment that
connects camera to a piece ofequipment.
If it was for thetri-pod,that means eitherno
tri-podshotsor have an unstable,
potentiallyshaking shot.
Make an equipment list and tick everything
off that I need. If I still forget or if it falls on
theflooror something I can quickly go back
to my house however, thiswould bewasting
time and theproductionwilllook
unprofessional.
Lucas, since I am directing.
Effecton production Control / Solution Person responsible
Incompleteplanning Possibly slow down production. Do all thepre-productionandplanning
before beginning product. It is vitalto know
what you're shooting, when and who with.
Lucas, since I am directing.
Lost equipment/prop or
forget something
Will look
unprofessionalandlower production
speed flow
Create a check list with every piece
of equipment or prop needed.Check
off everything before leaving to shoot.
Lucas, since I am directing.
Interviewee doesn't turn up /they
cancel
That day of production will be
cancelled, and that interviewee won't
be featured in thefilm
Havea range of people in mindto be
interviewed. Askthe people you want
most first, if one of thecancels then I
can askothers. Havebackup
interviewees.
Theinterviewee whocancels or meif I
don't haveany backup interviewees.
Location / event is unavailable or is
cancelled
That day scheduled day of production
is cancelled, this will push back the
workflow and takelonger for thefilm
to be complete
Havemore than one location / event
in mind, back these as backups in case
one cancelled for whateverreason
Thereason as to why theevent /
location is cancelled or meif I don't
have a backup.
An important piece of equipment is
forgotten (micetc)
When ready to shoot andit is
discovered I haveforgotten a piece of
equipment it could cause for the
shoot to be cancelled or the shoot to
look / soundbad
Havea check list of all the equipment
I need for that day, double check I
have everyhting before I set off
Lucas, since I am directing.
RiskAssessment
Risk Control
Someone could trip as thebike room is in the garage, can be quitemessy and
things on the floor.
Theroom shall be organised andtidyed up before it is usedfor filming.
Tripping over a wire connecting to alight Tuckthewire in and makesure everyone knows where it is, if thewire is at a
point on thefloor that could trip someoneup.
Eye's aching, strain from looking at themac toooften. Takea break when feels necessary.
Tripping over a step Don't run, walkand watch where you'regoing, makecast/crew aware of step
Falling / tripping on bikes or equipment in room It's asmallroom so watch what you'redoing, be careful. The room will be
tidy when filming
The locations I'm using will be my own home for one of the interviews , Walsall town centre for the bike race and countryside for the bike ride.
This risk assessment will focus on my house.
Walsall town centre:
Risk Control
Hit by car Be senible, have comman sense. Usetraffic lights when crossing road. Since
therace finishes in town centre, themain road will be blocked off from
normal cars, soit will be less likey tohave someonebe hit
Trip over a paving stone Even if in arush, watch whereyou’re walking, stay on theside of the
pavement that is smooth
Carrying equipment from thecar park to thelocation, potentially get hit by
car
Watch where I'm going and arrive early toavoid rush hour
Carrying the equipment through crowds of people, avoid hitting someone. Walk slowly, don't have anything pointing towards anyone.Try and slip intoa
quieter walkway.
The countryside – the moors:
Risk Control
Trip on uneven ground Wear appropriate footwear, watch where you are going, don't run.
When going up or down a steep hill, could slip or trip. Don't run, watch every step you take
While using drone tofilm, be careful not toget cut by thewings Don't grabit while it is hovering as you could catch yourhand or a finger
SD card or other smallpiece of equipement gets lost. When handeling smallpieces such as SD cards, makesure to keep them
safe. Put them in secure areas, not just aloose pocket.
General risks and hazards Access theproper risk assessment document

Sound Planning
Forthe way thefilm will soundthere will be a variety of diagetic andnon-diagetic tracks, I'vesplit them tomake it easier for meto know which sounds I
need to obtain either by recording them knowingly, getting them with thecamera accompanied with theimage, access them from theinternet or any
other way.
The sound Diagetic Non diagetic Source
Voice-over ----------------------------------- Willbe recorded via thecamera, using the
rodemic (for best audio quality)I only need
thesound so whatever imageis picked up
willbe discarded.
Soundtrack ----------------------------------- Willfind royaltyfree tracks online
Ambience– ext. countryside ----------------------------------- Most ofthe ext. Countrysideshots will be shot
via the dronewhichdoesn’t recordsound,so I
will record 'roomtone' whichI canthen apply
that soundto the image in post
Bike pedaling,wheel
spinningetc
----------------------------------- Willbe picked up with thecamera (using
therode mic attatched to camera)I might
isolatethesounds in post then to give
thema punch when quickly cutting
Dialogue ----------------------------------- From mic, onlydialoguewillbefrom
interviews orV.O.
Additonalsound effects These sounds willhave a source from
somehting on screen but might be taken
from the internet if thesounds I got with
my mic aren't good enough

Factual pre production planning

  • 2. Content –Visual Planning Before I start planning when andwhere I'm going to shoot –I need to plan what and I'm going to shoot. This is what I know sofar: • Thefilm will be 3-5 minutes long (I can't plan too much or too little) • I will interview various people from pro cyclists, fanatics and fans. (need toplan where, whoand when for interviews and how they will appear in the film) • I will focus on my dad (needplan when I shoot him on his bike and his interview) • Since I'm shooting interviews, I needplan my questions • Forthe structure, I need towrite ascript, this will be usefulfor my voice-over as well Themain elements of thesepoints will be notedin thescript: structure, voice-over, people whowill be interviewed. Theevents and scenes planned in the script are subject to change. It's adocumentary, I'm working with people, not characters, everything they say and do isn't necessarily determined, they might change the courseof thedocumentary. I will now statemy objectives for theproject, how I want it tolook, feel and operate: • Thefilm will have a curious nature, from the useof voive-over andstructure • It will explore why people cycle, the battlebetween man andnature andwhy we put ourselves through tough environments • It will engage people whoare interestedin cycling and thosewhoaren't. I will do this by making thefilm exciting by an enticing intro. • Its purposeis to educate people on themindset and cultureof cycling, how it's more than just amodeof transport, it's morethan just arace, apastime, exercise- it's people's lives.
  • 3. Script Like I mentionedin the previous slide the script will be a working document, it's subject to change. It gets across the basic structureandmood. I wrotedown what I'll probably be saying in the voice-over. In thissection I describe what I plan to beshowing visually. This is what I plan tobe saying in my voice-over for thefilm. This part will be hard to shootas we will need to find a cyclist onthe road.I wantto make the film relatable forpeople whoaren't cyclists to broadenthe audience, perhapsthis shot will feel cheap? Silly? Staged? I may need to considerto do a quick interview. Or aneven simplier way-when I'm recordingmy dad, I can shoota bit where a cardrives past him or whenhe's on a main road. With that shot and the voice-over,the audinceshould be able to put it together andthink ofexperineces when they have questioned whypeople ride their bikes like that. Thelatterhalf of thefilm is stillhazy. I know how I want to finish it and most likleyI'lladdsome voice-over to tiethe film off with a bow. I'm thinking it to be a littleslower, and myself (voice-over) summing up what we've just heard. Main interview – might changewhen I've collected allmy footageand reviewed it, started to make an edit. Themain intro to thefilm, hopefullyhooking theaudience. Will need tofind royalty free music for this section
  • 4. Question Sheet I will be conducting at least twofull interviews. I plan on interviewing someof theriders after therace as they cool down, but theseinterviews will not be formal set-ups andwill not last long. The two main interviews will be with Mavis Evans andMark Higham.Theone with Higham will be aformal sit-down interview, three-point lighting etc and theone with Evans will be slightly moreinformal as I will be interviewing her while she is working at the race, so I won't beable to set up any lighting. The interviewing practise shouldbe the same. I will plan my questions forthe interviewees in theorder that theinterview shouldtakeplace in. Mavis Evans - interview As a rule-of-thumb, each question asked totheinterviewee shouldbe repeated in their answer. For example: Question:What first got you interested in cycling? Beginning of answer: I first got interested in cycling when.... This shall be statedandpracticed totheinterviewee afew moments beforethe interview officially begins. Thesheet shall workwith three sections. 1) thequestion that will be asked2) an exampleof how theinterviewee shouldfirst respond, if they have trouble with this, I can refer them tothe sheet 3) if they don't get tothe core of what I want them totell me, I can be moredirect with thesepromps, if needed. This also helps if the interviewee doesn't understandthequestion. Question: Beginning of answer: The core of the question: Where are weand why are you here? I am inWalsall... assisting in... Set the scene forwhere we are and whatyou are doing here. How didyou first become involed in the cycling world? Where did this interest/obsession come from? I first became a cycling fan when... Giveus your story, tell us wherethis came from. Giveus a nice, relatable story. Why do you think people put themselves through brutal races from pros totheeveryday cycling fan? I think thesepeople put themselves through brutal races as.... Try and tellus thecore of thecycling obsession, thinkback to allthe crazy pros you've met, what you've seen. You're probablythemost qualified person to answer this with all your experience, why?
  • 5. Question Sheet Mark Higham- interview Question: Beginning of answer: The core of the question: - Introduceyourself whoare you, how old are you? I'm MarkHigham, I'm 47-years-old.... A quick intro towhowe're talking to, this is swiftly followed by thesecond question - How long have you been a cycling fan and where did this obsession first come from? I'vebeen a cycling fan for..... I first got intocycling by.... Groundyourself as a fan whoknows what they're talking about. Show off. Be interesting. -What races have you been involed in? How many? Whereabouts? How didyou find them?Which ones were most memorable? I'veridden in X races in.... they were.... You'renot just someonewhowatches cycling or goes on saferides- you activley go andseek the thrill of racing, all over theworld. - How haveyou got involed in cycling cultureand communities? Why dothat? I'vebeen involved in X cycling club.... doing in.... You'rea member of cycling communities, mention coaching people. Why dothat? -Talkabout thehaute route, what was that like? What is it? I rode in the hauteroute 2017, thehauterouteis.... it was brutal, exhausting.... Firstly, explain to us what thehauterouteis, bulid it up.Then talk about your experience with it.Why did you do it?What appealed to you about it? -Wouldyou do it again? Why? WouldI doit again... yes/no… it’s theexperience of a lifetime/it was hard, and I was miserable Wouldyou put yourself through a brutal bike race again, why? -Why cycle at all? Why doany of this? You'vetoldus about thebrutalitly you willing put yourself through in thehaute route, the countless bikerides you've been on.This is more than just asport toyou? Why? I do it because.... Tell us why you cycle, get personal. Makeit personal toyou.

  • 10. Storyboard – Interviews Shot Description Storyboard Med Interviewee. Camera on angle, they're facing me, not looking at camera. Three-point lighting set-up. Deep focus on his face, bits of backgroundas it will be shot in his 'bike room' sonice to get bits of that in theshot, adds tothe cycling theme, shows he likes cycling. Plus adds more colour to frame, makes it pop. Med Vox-pop styleinterview with riders from the race. Will be handheld as brining thetripod and setting it up would'vebeen tooinconvenient for theday and how it functions. Med Interview with Mavis, handheld. Try andstay as staticas possible.
  • 11. Shot Description Storyboard Close-up B-roll, insert shots as interview goes on.Theseare of his medals. More shots similrato this will be taken. • 12. Equipment list Equipment Tuesday 12th Interview Higham Shooting bike ride Canon 200D Tripod Mic Lightingkit Gorillatripod Dead cat 18-10mm lens Equipment bag Camera batteries Lightingbatteries Kit lens 18-55mm Dolly SD Card MacBookPro Drone = will be used = will not be used I plan on shooting scenes for thefilm on three separate days at three separate locations. Thefirst dayis in Walsallat stagetwo of thewomen's cycling tour of Britian,I will travel light and use onlywhat I need. I will not havean opportunityto use thelighting, too heavyand time consuming to setup. The tripod, also too heavyand not portable, same with thelighting.Instead,I brought agorillatripod,it'slight and if I need a staticshot, it's thereto use. Also, will help steadyhandheld camera movement. A drone won't benecessary either,it's a cycling event and drones most likelywon't be allowed, could interfere with therace and be dangerous. Theinterview with Highamshallbe held to my house, very easy to transport theequipment and set up. No need for lighter, exterior, portableequipment such as theequipment bag, dead cat (for exteriormic work, reduce wind noise) and gorillatripod.Allshot willbedone using. a tripod, stable and smooth.I'll beshooting theinterview and B-roll, cutaway footage.Willhavelaptop onhand in case I need to refer to anything on thisdocument although I'm considering printing out a physicalcopy. On thebikeride, it willtakeplaceoutsidetherefore thereis no need for lighting kit oreven thegorillatripod and the dead cat. I mainly need visuals. No sound is particularly required. I willpredominatelybeusing thedrone, maybe bring thetripod incase I want some staticshots. He willbe in motionmost of thetime.

Audio problems during interview Potentially ruin theinterview Before interview, make sure everything is ok.Check theequipment and contineto checkback during theinterview Lucas, since I am responsible for all the equipment. Organisational n/a n/a n/a Forget a small pieceof equipment that connects camera to a piece ofequipment. If it was for thetri-pod,that means eitherno tri-podshotsor have an unstable, potentiallyshaking shot. Make an equipment list and tick everything off that I need. If I still forget or if it falls on theflooror something I can quickly go back to my house however, thiswould bewasting time and theproductionwilllook unprofessional. Lucas, since I am directing.

Sound Planning Forthe way thefilm will soundthere will be a variety of diagetic andnon-diagetic tracks, I'vesplit them tomake it easier for meto know which sounds I need to obtain either by recording them knowingly, getting them with thecamera accompanied with theimage, access them from theinternet or any other way. The sound Diagetic Non diagetic Source Voice-over ----------------------------------- Willbe recorded via thecamera, using the rodemic (for best audio quality)I only need thesound so whatever imageis picked up willbe discarded. Soundtrack ----------------------------------- Willfind royaltyfree tracks online Ambience– ext. countryside ----------------------------------- Most ofthe ext. Countrysideshots will be shot via the dronewhichdoesn’t recordsound,so I will record 'roomtone' whichI canthen apply that soundto the image in post Bike pedaling, wheel spinningetc ----------------------------------- Willbe picked up with thecamera (using therode mic attatched to camera)I might isolatethesounds in post then to give thema punch when quickly cutting Dialogue ----------------------------------- From mic, onlydialoguewillbefrom interviews orV.O. Additonalsound effects These sounds willhave a source from somehting on screen but might be taken from the internet if thesounds I got with my mic aren't good enough
