Editor's Notes

  1. Did you know that every day there are more than 1 billion searches conducted on LinkedIn? In today's connected world, your active presence on LinkedIn is imperative. Basically, if you aren't on social media, then you don't exist in the business world. So, how do you make your LinkedIn profile stand out from your competitors? During the next hour, We'll start by focusing on you, including the importance of your profile picture, and you'll learn how to create an engaging professional headline. Next, I'll show you how to transform your profile from a resume or CV into a proactive sales tool, and finally, I'll share an action plan with you so you can take the next steps in creating your standout profile on LinkedIn. Are you ready to get started? Let's do it.
  2. So, why you need a professional Linkedin Profile Now?
  3. Do you know what the biggest mistake is people make on LinkedIn? […] Not having an account, not updating it, not having a picture, or having just a few connections are all great guesses. But let me help you.
  4. It is using LinkedIn as a billboard rather than as a tool. And here's what happens a lot. People get several invitations. At a certain moment of time they feel like, "Hey, LinkedIn is here to stay. "Let me set up and account." So, they set one up. They fill out a couple of details in their profile, but all very basic, almost like a CV. Then they accept a number of invitations and that's it, that's where they leave it at. And here you have an amazing example of one of my best friends…or even worse, this is my own uncle’s linkedin profile. He’s account manager in quite a big international company, but do you really think he sees the value in having a Linkedin profile? I don’t think so. Then, they're unaware that when people look them up, they aren't making a good first impression. In this era of social selling, people do look you up online before getting in touch with you. In fact, about 57% of the decision to do business with you has already been made before prospect gets in touch with you. That's why your return on investment, or ROI, on social media is so important, especially with LinkedIn.
  5. It all starts with your profile and your visibility. Take a minute and Google yourself. What comes up? Okay, for some people, we don't want to know. But, seriously, what happens if people don't find you? What happens if you don't look good online? Nothing. They go elsewhere and you missed out on the opportunity. Then, you need to consider your presence and connectability. The ROI is about how strong your network is. Sometimes, colleagues are not connected. If you are looking for a supplier and they are not well-connected internally, you might think that they work in a siloed organization. Do they even talk to each other? But, also, imagine if you're in a business development capacity and you only have 25 or even 100 connections. Would prospects still take you seriously? For the record, I'm a fan of quality connections. The quantity is also important, but less relevant. Your third level is about your participation. When you start posting status updates, liking, commenting, and sharing, or even participating in groups, it all contributes to an increase of your likeablity. You acquire a reputation for being informed within your context. You will be top of mind, preferably, for your target audience. These first three levels are mandatory for everyone in an organization. But thought leaders, or aspiring ones, have two additional levels they must attain. The next level is about developing your credibility. When you start to publish long articles, you start to gain a following. You're raising your personal brand and your social capital. The final level is when you increase your trust. By positioning yourself as a thought leader, people start to see you as a role model and a respected leader. They'll start to show up and want to belong to your team. So, bringing it back to you. Your profile needs to stand out on LinkedIn. You need to be perceived as a top professional who people want to do business with. You not only need to look good online, you also need to attract new prospects. Be a great advocate for your organization and, above all, start using LinkedIn as a tool, rather than a billboard.
  6. So, key messages: +Be a great advocate for your organization and, above all, +start using LinkedIn as a tool, rather than a billboard.
  7. So, Let’s start with the basics, Your Summary in your LinkedIn profile
  8. What is the most important part of your profile that the least number of people have properly filled out? Your summary. The real question to ask here is what do you want to accomplish with your summary. For most people, it should be giving a sweet summary where you invite visitors to read on. There are some ways to increase the readability by adding a simple line in your summary. The easiest place to start is with a piece of corporate branding. Your colleagues in marketing probably have a one-paragraph play text About Microsoft, ask for it. The goal is to give an overview of what your organization does. When you're working for a larger corporation as Microsoft, you might need two paragraphs, one about the organization in general and one specifically for your department, in this case, what CFA does. Once people read about your organization, they might want to know more about your professional role. We call this your professional branding. What is that you do? Give specifics and educate them, but don't be too detailed. The details will follow in your experience. Make sure you also explain what you want people to do to take the next step with you. This might be an email for some and a call for others. The bottom line is that you arouse interest and give them a call to action. Now, your personal profile isn't complete without a bit of personal branding. This is the third block to add to your summary. You can choose full sentences, or easier, a list of keywords. The goal is for people to learn more about you as a person. Add in a couple of teasers and you will see that more people start a conversation with you. So for example, there are people that include in the summary that, are vegetarians or adrenaline addicted. You wouldn't believe how many people ask about those personal facts if you chose the right words. One final tip, your summary can contain a maximum of 2,000 characters, so choose well. Remember, more details can be shared through your experience. Make your summary worthwhile, not only for people to read, but also invite them to discover the rest of your profile too. But let’s check a good example better: here we have the LinkedIn profile of the person that designed this course, Bert Verdonck, as you can see as he is not in an international company, he has not separated what his team does and what his company does, but right below, are the keywords he has used for his personal branding. But not also! Here there are links to multimedia content he has included in his summary. Having rich media on your profile is an easy way to stand out on LinkedIn. Unfortunately, most people don't have it, which is a wasted opportunity. Rich media is a collective name for all sorts of platforms with a multimedia angle, to spice up your profile. Probably the easiest example is adding a YouTube movie to your summary. Let's see how to do that. Go to youtube.com and find a clip you want to add to your profile [description on how to do it] Or else, you can chose your own content, just by select the upload from your device option. Do yourself and others a favor and add them to your profile.
  9. But let’s move on… what about your experience? Past and current positions Do you think that LinkedIn is an online database for resumes? That is so 2009. LinkedIn has progressed a lot since then. And yes, the platform is still used by recruiters and job seekers, but also for so much more.
  10. Let's talk about how to effectively present your results not your resume. Do you have a goal in mind with your experience section? To help people find you and understand who you are, and see if you are the right person to help them. So, what needs to be in your experience? First of all just like in your summary a piece of cooperate branding.
  11. Provide readers of your profile with one or two paragraphs about your organization, and your department. Even if you're an A brand like Microsoft, it's important to inform them properly. Next is your professional role, or what Is called your professional branding. This is similar to what I already mentioned for the summary section, but this time focused in just your professional role, not your personal branding. Make sure you explain what it is that you do. Just like in your summary, but this time more elaborately. A job title can mean many things, so here is your chance to explain it properly. What do you do on a daily basis? Why should people get in touch with you? When should they get in touch with you? If you're not the right person to speak to, who is? Redirect them, educate them, and share your responsibilities and your achievements. By the way, what are your results? Make them as tangible as possible. It's great to share them so people see that you are proud of your job and also that you're responsible for achieving certain results. If you can't mention absolute numbers, can you share percentages? If you are responsible for your team, can you include the overall results? The more tangible and precise the better. Before I forget, make sure you check internally with compliance team about not breaching any confidentiality with Microsoft. You're responsible for what you post online. So make sure that what you put on your profile is cleared by the right person or department internally. Unfortunately, some companies like ours, have serious nondisclosure agreements. An employee may mention one of these on their profile, including the name of the customer and that can cause problems. Don't ever do that. Always verify first. And in case of doubt, talk to someone internally first. Also, mention what you do not want. Think about what it is that you do not want and add that to your experience too. For each experience you have up to 2000 characters. Which should be enough to get your story across. Just like your summary, make sure you add a call to action. What would you like people to do when they are done reading your experience? What is the next step you want them to take? Some people mention their contact details here again. Remember, your profile is about you, but it is for your target audience. What can you do to facilitate them? Always keep that in mind. Also, this tips apply both for your current position as well as your past roles. Keep the high level of detail in each of your working life items. Readers need to understand who you are and what your track record is. It's not so much about boosting your ego, but more about what's in it for them. Also, for job seekers, it's great to get an overview of your career, so they get inspired by the steps you took to obtain your current position. Also, recruiters love to dig into your career path so far. Again, it doesn't hurt to educate people a bit more about you. If people like what they see, then you will get more people reaching out to you. This means you are using your profile as a tool. Just like in your current experience, you need to add relevant info and a call to action for your target audience. Remember, they need confirmation that you are the right person for them.
  12. In order to shine a light on your experience, you need to tell a powerfully visual story through your profile using rich media. In fact, there are a wealth of websites that you can incorporate in your Linked In profile. But first, it's good to really understand why this is important. Let's start with a question first. Why would people who click to visit your profile spend more time on your profile compared to other profiles? The answer is easy. Most people don't read or don't have time to read, so they're looking for visual clues. Of course, all the text in your profile is important and will be picked up by search engines, but when comparing two similar profiles, the one with rich media will get more attention than the one without. One of the first ways to add rich media content is slide share. To me, slide share is the Youtube for Powerpoint. There is so much content on it that you can never read it all. One of the best kept secrets is that slide share does an amazing job with being indexed in google and other search engines. Personally, I have uploaded this same presentation to slide share and I expect with this to be found in google when people are searching for some of the key words I would like to be found on. To insert a presentation in your Linked In profile, go to slideshare.net and sign in with your Linked In account, normally, if this is the first time you join Slide Share, it will pick your credentials on the browser and will link it to your LinkedIn profile. Upload a Powerpoint presentation of your choice, add a title, description, text and some other elements and publish it there. It's also handy to know that along with Microsoft Powerpoint you can upload Word and PDF files. Think about other types of content like an infographic, a visual map, or pictures that can enhance the experience of those visiting your profile. For your reference, here is how we can upload a deck to our slide share profile […]
  13. So okok, now we know how to share and enhance our professional experience, but there is a further step for succeeding in LinkedIn, and this is creating your own Brand.
  14. The whole point of your LinkedIn profile is to show people what a unique and valuable individual you really are. So, LinkedIn has a section for highlighting the extra mile you've gone, and the special things you've done that make you stand out from your peers. Including these honors in your profile is every bit as important as listing your experience and skills, because these are the hard proof that say, this individual is truly accomplished, and worth getting to know better. To start, you want to list any awards you've received. Fortunately for us, Microsoft has a well stablished recognition program in place, so I am aware many of you already received honors and rewards to put in your LinkedIn profile. Only list ones that are relevant to your field of expertise, or that help people understand the level of competency you bring. If you haven't received any awards of note, it's better to leave this section blank. To do this, begin adding the honors and awards element. Find the Add New Profile Section, and Accomplishments. Then you will fill out the title, and link it to the relevant experience. For example, your current job. Also, mention the who awarded it, and a date when you received it. Finally, insert a short description. If you have certifications, such as, Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer, list them. Actually, some jobs require certifications. By doing this, you make it clear to readers that you meet industry standards. And you show how these certifications may place you into a higher-skilled level than others who may have similar experience. Did you know there is a place in your LinkedIn profile to showcase your work and connect it to colleagues and clients? Adding projects is an excellent way to arouse interest from your audience. If they see what you've done for others, they might want it, too. When you go to Add new profile section in your profile and click on Accomplishments, you will find the Projects elements right there. Start with giving your project an attractive project name. Remember, people should want to know more about it. Is your project ongoing? If not, indicate the start date and end date. Make sure you add the relevant team members. This is also where you can bring in some of your peers contacts and invite them to add the same project to their profile, too. Guess what happens next. Indeed, you will get more people visiting your profile, coming in through your peers profile. Make sure you add the relevant team members. This is where you can also bring in some of your colleagues contacts and invite them to add the same project to their profile, too. You will get more people visiting your profile coming in through your colleagues. It shows that it is a collaborative effort and that you are a team player as well. To absolutely make it a stunning project, just add a short description with results if you can. Again, the main goal here is to get people interested so they want to take the next step with you. By adding projects to your LinkedIn profile, you increase the chances of people picking up examples of what you can do to help them, and that is exactly where you want them. There is a 4th step to create your own personal brand that I have removed in this section given the complexity of it, and its creating your own content and publish it Online. Of course this is a great step towards gaining visibility and improving your personal branding, but given the time investment required I preferred to skip it for now as you may understand. BUT, of course, If you have the time and the willingness, go ahead and create your own content for the LinkedIn community!
  15. Next section! As we are all aware of how to pick the skills and add them to the tool I Will move forward directly to the recommendations part,
  16. First off, should I have recommendations on my profile? Yes, is the answer. How important is it, when you buy a book on Amazon, to read the reviews? Pretty important, right? It is similar with recommendations on your LinkedIn profile. But be careful not to put one of those general recommendations on it. You know, like the ones saying “Lucia is a great person with a brilliant sense of humor”. Cool. What does it tell you? Almost nothing, besides the impression that it might be written by a friend of mine, right? Instead of a vague recommendation, make it to the point, with tangible results, like the 10 to 15 percent. It is rich with detail, preferably with exact numbers, like the 92 percent customer satisfaction, and indicate your relationship, and give examples to the person's key skills that impress you. The next question is, how many recommendations should you have on your profile? According to studies, profile visitors lose count after five to seven. It is not much of a difference if you have 20, 50, 70, or even 200. Remember, visitors want confirmation that they have landed on the right profile. Most of them do not read everything. If you have a few on your profile, it is enough confirmation for them. Now, how do you ask for them? Initially, I don't recommend to ask for recommendations, and I don't encourage others to do it. If people want to give me one, that's fine. I appreciate it, but I'm not asking for them myself. Having said that, I do understand that people want them. So, if you really feel the need to ask for them, here's the suggestion. Always give people a way out, otherwise it can become quite awkward or uncomfortable. Next, ask them if they need input from you. Would they like a draft from you, to speed up the process? Then, to start the process, tell them you will send a formal invitation for a recommendation via LinkedIn. This is easily done. So if you Scroll to your recommendations on your profile, and click on the ask to be recommended link. You just need to fill the requested information and forward the invite to your first degree contact.
  17. I have purposely skipped the education part of the training as I believe all of us knows how to fill that in our Linkeding profiles, BUT, what about making the most of our personality? Most people has a purely professional profile on LinkedIn, no personal touch whatsoever. But seriously, add some personal branding, elements from your private life, preferably intriguing or things that arouse curiosity, just to show that you're approachable. so where do you add that to your profile? Everywhere where it makes sense, In your professional headline, in your summary, in your experience, in your volunteering experience. I am not saying you should mix your yoga skills with your Project management skills, but give a personal touch here and there is always useful.
  18. Now, about volunteering…Did you know that according to a LinkedIn survey, 41 percent of employers consider volunteer work to be as important as paid work.
  19. It is indeed one way of showing that you're a passionate professional who's adept at multitasking. It's also a great way to make connections. So volunteering experience is important. To add this to your profile, click on the me button in the top navigation. And then choose at new profile section on the right top corner. Choose volunteering experience. Start with adding the organization and if they have a company page, it will show up in the list once you start typing. What was your role? Meal server, mentor, fundraiser. Which cause do you assist? Choose the relevant one from the drop down menu. Enter your start date and end date if applicable. Indicate if you're currently still a volunteer there, educate them on your true responsibilities, achieved goals, and skills acquired. Adapt your profile to your target audience because you don't know which search criteria people are using. So is it really a good idea to insert odd jobs from your teen years? Like working for Doctors Without Borders or an art instructor. Including your roles, responsibilities, and accomplishments. Certainly as soon as you establish common ground with the people who are looking for you your no luck and trust factor as Bob Burr calls it goes up a couple of levels. If people don't know you, they're not inclined to do business with you. If they do know you, but don't like you, you don't stand much of a chance. However, if they know you and like you, then they will start to trust you. And in social selling, a lot is based on trust. LinkedIn can allow you to establish some common ground with people like a volunteer program you went through. If your profile visitor went through the same experience, and wants you for the skills she knows you learned there she will take that next step with you. Invitation, meeting, or a phone call. So what's keeping you from adding your volunteering work to your profile? Remember sharing is caring. If your profile visitors read about a similar or the same charity you're both involved in, it is an excellent conversation starter. Again lifting you to the next level, while showing what a passionate professional you are and making this world a better place.
