2. Masthead: The mast head is the
bold, red font saying âVogueâ. The
font used is elegant and sharp,
which reflects womens
empowerment in a fierce and
strong manner. The red connotes
passion and danger. This helps
exaggerate these connotations of
the font by being sharp and fierce.
The imagery helps add to the
empowerment it is portraying.
Coverlines:The coverlines on this
magazine contain information on
what to expect as you read
further into the magazine. There
is a mixture of black and white
fonts used, to help highlight what
they want the audience to see.
For example: they have a
celebrity on the front cover for
the imagery. This has lead Vogue
to highlight her presence. From
this, they attract âJennifer
Lawerencesâ target audience.
She is also an icon for womens
empowerment, which makes her
an ideal candidate. The font used
here, is all in bold and capital
letters. What this does is make
the information look important.
The placing of the font has
surrounded the imagery, so that
is makes it more bold. This is
because the magazine âVogueâ
want you to concentrate on it.
This helps the audience
empathize with the fierce and
powerful aspects of the
magazine. This helped reflect
âvoguesâ values.
Images: The image used here is a
close up shot of a females face.
This close up shot adds realism
and creates a more serious and
intense atmosphere. This helps
the audience empathize with the
aspects of women empowerment
by creating a fierce and serious
looking model. They have also
used the colour green in the outfit
chosen. The colour green
connotes jealousy, wealth and life.
Due to Vogue being a
sophisticated brand, this reflects
the brand in a positive light.
3. Vogue Double Page Spread:
This double page spread for vogue contains two
types of advertisement. It includes a lot of
advertisement for fashion company's as well as
charities. The other type of advertisement is the
products that vogue have produced.
Oxfam Double Page Spread:
The fonts used on the double page spread, varies. For
example: on the âOxfamâ page they have used vintage
styled fonts. This will be to give off the appeal of
donating old belongings to the charity which will lead for
others to bring life back into that era. They have used a
lot of pastel colours to help show different time periods.
For example: pastel colours were mainly known in the
50âs. The colour scheme also consists of lots of greens.
The colour green helps connote health and freshment.
This is showing that if you look good, you will feel good.
The colour green is there to help exaggerate this effect.
The imagery used is there to help exaggerate the
slogans used. The slogan used is âlose yourself in a
world of vintageâ. This has inspired them to create a
messy and small environment whilst creating this
advertisement. They have used a storage like scenery.
This helps advertise giving your second hand clothing to
the charity, as well as clearing your storage place.
Theyâve placed random objects in the imagery to show
the audience that anything donated is appreciated
because there is beauty in everything.
âThe Joy of Socksâ Double page spread:
The font used in this page varies. They have used 3 different fonts
to advertise there work. For example: they have used a more bold
and elegant font to express key words. What this does, is leads the
audience to view these words first. From this, the audience can
decide if they want to read the article or not. The font then goes on
to change, by becoming more of a feather quit style writing. This
helps exaggerate the appeal of âvintageâ by including old fashioned
writing. What this does is gives off a old fashion style which links into
the images and product they are advertising. There isn't a set colour
scheme for this page, but they do have a lot of neutral colours with a
few bold colours thrown in. What this does is attracts the audiences
attention to the images before the writing. The placing of the font is
around the image, which makes the image central. This is what the
audience will immediately look at.
4. Vogues Website:
Vogue have used very neutral colours to display there
website. This is because vogue is a sophisticated brand
which is very arsty. This is mainly to do with the fact it is a
fashion company. The black and white effect used is very
vintage which is relevant to the clothes they produce. The
white connotes purity. Where as, black connotes darkness
and mystery. This contrast helps display an interesting
effect, which makes the audience want to research further
into the brand and explore what clothing they create. The
website also contain a lot of celebrity's and models. This
helps engage there target audience which widens the
appeals of vogue even more.
The Vogue website also contains a lot of advertisement for
different fashion brands. For example: the website contains
stuff for versace and gucci. These two brands are very
superior and prestige brands which makes them good
candidates for vogue.
Also, from researching into the vogue website i have
discovered that it is heavily pictured based. Even though the
website does contain article on catwalks and specific
designers, it definitely contains more pictures then writing.
This will be because with fashion, the effect definitely has to
be expressed through images. The websites lay out is
simple too. This means its easy to locate what you're
looking for. This clear basis makes it simple and easier for
the target audience to look round for.
5. Masthead: The masthead is
bold, red writing saying
âEmpire.â The font used is bold
and tall. This font gives off the
effect of a tall and superior
building. This helps display that
the magazine is mainly about
film, due to the font and style
giving off a âcreditsâ feel. This
would be displayed at the end
of a film. The red font connotes
danger. This adds to the effect
of the genre they are trying to
display, which in this case is
action. Red can also symbolise
passion. This helps add
empowerment to the main
image. The font helps add a
more dramatic twist to this.
Blobs/Star: The blob and star used in this magazine is the âwin
ÂŁ1500â. What this does is makes people want to buy the
magazine with the chance to win money. The colours used to
advertise this is grey. This is a very neutral colour to use which
doesnât give anything away.
Coverlines: The coverlines all
show different font styles. The
positioning of the font is very
central. This helps add to the
effect of the font being tall and
superior. This also exaggerates
the fact that they are trying to
place the coverlines like the
credits in a film. Again, this
helps display the magazine as
a movie based one. Theyâve
used a mixture of whites and
red in the fonts. The red has
been used to highlight
important information. For
example: they have highlighted
Angelina Jolie. What this will do
is bring in her target audiences
and fans. This will then
increase the popularity of
magazine.
The font used to display the
words âThe hunger gamesâ is
very rustic and dirty. This helps
show the film is action. The font
is very military and bold which
gives off the effect of war and
destruction.
Barcode: The barcode is
there if you are wanting to
purchase the item. The
positioning of the bar code is
at the bottom so it doesn't
disturb the effect of the
magazine.
6. Empires Double Page Spread:
The double page spread for Empire is very
different to other double page spreads i have
researched into. This double page spread
contains more writing and less imagery. This is
because the magazine âEmpireâ is a magazine
that reviews films and gives there feedback on
it. The font used in this magazine again varies.
For example, the font is simple and bold. This
means its straight to the point. Also, its clear on
what the information is about from the imagery.
This means the audience doesn't have to read
through the text before knowing what the text is
about. How the images have been set is so you
look from the left to the right. What this does is
allows the audience to skim over the page but
know exactly where the important information is.
The structure of the text is again central. This helps give the effect of the end of movie credits. This helps adds to the
fact the magazine is here to give there opinions on movies.
The images used helps centralise the main character. They have done this by using her in two of the shots. What this
does is inform the audience who the text will be concentrating on. The overall page doesn't have a colour scheme.
However, you can tell that the film is a action film due to the dark and dull colours. They have also included images
with guns in which helps display the violence in the film. This also helps add to the effect of the genre being action.
7. Empire Website:
Empires website is simple and easy to find what you are
looking for. This clearness helps the audience locate what
they are looking for. The colour scheme is basic. The
main colours used are white, black and red. These three
colours work well together. The red helps highlight the
important information and highlights what they are
wanting to advertise. For example: they have clearly
made the brands name red. What this does is draws the
audience attention straight to it, which makes the brands
name memorable. The colour red helps connote both
danger and love. This contrast helps display different
types of genres which my appear on the website. For
example: you can see they have clearly advertised the
âgreatest romantic movieâ. This is then highlighted by
both the imagery and then fact there is red placed
directly under this image.
The images have also been placed is a very central way.
What this does is makes the website seem like movie
credits. This has also been reflected with how the font
has been placed.
8. Masthead: The masthead is
the words saying âdeliciousâ.
The font is in all lower case
which adds a casual effect to
it. The font is very curvy and
wavey. This effect gives off a
fancy appeal. The colour
gold, helps conotate wealth
and luxury.
Coverlines: The coverlines
show different styles of
fonts and colours. The two
colours they differentiate
from are white and a pastel
red. These two colours
contrast which makes the
red stand out more. The
font style varies on what
they ae trying to advertise.
For example: âwhy rumble
hits the spotâŠeverytimeâ
the word âeverytimeâ is
written as if it was hand
written. This gives off the
impression of a homely feel.
It also shows you can make
these recipes at home
which makes the magazine
relevant.
Barcode: The barcode is
there so that you can
purchase the magazine.
The placing of the barcode
is blended in which makes
it less obvious. This
means that it wont effect
the look of the magazine.
Blob/Stars: The blob shows you
what you can learn from inside
the magazine. In this case, if you
buy the magazine is shows that
you can learn how to make
custard in a âfool proofâ manner.
The blob is coloured pink which
reflect passion and love. This
shows that this magazine is
passionate about food and gives
off a homely effect.
Imagery: The imagery used is
a delicious looking crumble.
It shows a realistic piece of
food, which help displays that
these recipes are easy to
make from home.
9. Deliciousâ Double Page Spread:
The double page spread for the magazine
âDeliciousâ consists of many different
features to the movie and fashion
magazine. The name âdeliciousâ helps
display that the magazine is dedicated to
food. This word is also relatable so when
the audience reads it, they instantly think if
foods they enjoy. This makes them want to
read on due to finding new recipes and food
ideas. This magazine is definitely based
towards adults. This is because the lay out
is mature and food is more relatable to
adults who enjoy healthy eating.
Also, the colour scheme is basic and classy. This helps add elegance to the pictures inserts in the
double page spread. The colour grey is very neutral which adds no emotion to the page. However, the
images included having vibrant aspects to them which shows they look healthy and elegant. The simple
use of making the food look vibrant helps draw the audiences attention straight away. It also includes a
lot of greens which helps add to the exaggeration of health and well ness. This makes people eager to
try the products due to them being a healthy alternative. This is because there target audience is adults,
it helps reflect different meal choices. The majority of Adults like trying new and qwerty things, which will
include stuff like healthy salads and noodle dishes. The placing of the text makes the double page
spread more accurate too. This is because the audience will read left to right. The text makes it clear
what its describing by placing the image next to it. This means the audience can skim through and only
have to read the parts they are interested in. This makes the magazine clear to indicate the information
the audience wants to gather.
10. âDeliciousâ Website:
Deliciousâ website is simple and practical. It has a very
basic colour scheme which makes it suitable for the
audience. By making it simple they have highlighted
the elegance of the website which adds effect on what
they are trying to advertise, which in this case is food.
The greys used reflect a very neutral colour which has
no emotional aspect behind it. Where as, the blue
helps connotes being trust worthy. This is highly
important because it gives a friendly effect across
which is a great characteristic to include for a food
related website. This is because it comes across
inviting which means people find the website light
hearted and interesting.
The website instantly makes you know its a food website due to the images inserted. The imagery used is
half hidden which makes the audience question what it is. From doing this, it makes the audience want to
explore the website further, which leads to more views. This will help widen the appeal. Theyâve also
included shots of there magazines which helps spread there brand onto other media platforms. This will help
maximise there audience which again will help spread the appeal further. The font used is very basic and
bold. This gives off the effect of it being simple and easy. This makes the information provided clear and
easy to find information. The text has be placed central so it gives off a clear indication of instruction. This is
similar to what a cook book would do. Theyâve also made it clear on where to find pacific information which
makes the overall website easy to navigate your way around.
11. Summary/Initial Reaction
My initial reaction to the print rotation was a positive one. This is because out of the three
rotations i am more interested in print. This is because i feel like you gain more valuable skills
and learn more practical aspects. For example: magazines and websites is highly demanding to
this day.
I feel like i will learn a lot from this rotation due to coming to terms with the way websites are
structured as well as magazines. Also, we will be looking more into photography. This means we
have to be both practical and creative in the way we present certain shots. This is highly
important because the photography will reflect what genre we are trying to present.
I feel like with this rotation i am going to struggle with photoshop and constructing the edits. This
is because i need to work on my editing skills, so that they are more effective and persist. This
will mean i will have to make my planning and research effective, so i can make the website and
magazine as accurate as possible. This will then lead for my advertisement to be more effective.
From researching into magazines and websites i have realised that a lot of work has gone into
constructing them. The designers have thought about all the little details like font and placement
to try and give the most effective way of advertising there brand to there target audience. These
are aspects i will develop in this rotation, which will lead for me to have a deeper understanding
of the media industry as well as print in general.
