Artist Analysis
Nicki Minaj is an R n B/hip-hop/pop/female
rapper. The mise en scene of this picture
portrays this genre as she is very heavily made
up, with her hair and makeup done. Also, she is
in very minimal clothing with a lot of jewellery
which is mainly gold, which is very stereotypical
for the R n B and hip hop genre. Her pose is also
could be viewed as provocative, this interlinks
with the genre as the lyrics in songs from this
genre are usually sexual orientated and risqué.
The picture is also very glamorous, and the use
of the deep depth of shows that there is
somebody in the left hand side of the frame,
suggesting she is being watched photographed.
George Ezra is a solo-male folk/blues/rock singer
song writer. The mise en scene of this picture
emphasises the genre as he is holding a guitar,
stereotypically folk singers play the guitar, as well
as well-known blues singers. His hair is also styled
very similar to that of Elvis Presley, who was well
known for his rock and roll and blues look. Also,
the black and white effect makes it more gentle on
the eye, which suggests that his music is quite
gentle and soft compared to that of other genres.
The 1975 are an alternative/indie pop/indie rock
band. The mise en scene of this picture places Matt
Healy in front of his fellow band members; this
suggests that he is the lead singer and main focal
point of the band. Their costume is very stereotypical
to the genre as they are mainly wearing black and
grey and Healy is wearing a leather jacket, which is a
popular outfit choice of bikers, this connotation can
make him look tough as well as the tattoos seen on
George Daniels arm. Also, they all give direct address
with stern smirks on their faces which also make
them seen more intimidating, which again links into
the stereotypes of the indie rock genre.

One Direction are boy band whose music is mainly pop. The
mise en scene of this picture emphasises their genre as they
are very clean cut and groomed, which also suggests that
their audience is females of a young age as they appear very
child-friendly. Also, with Harry Styles being in the middle, it
suggests that he is the lead/main member of the band, and
the other members are almost crowded around him. They all
look very happy and have smiles on their faces which
emphasises the pop boy band look as they have to appeal to
a wider audience. Also, the boy band look is highlighted as
none of the have instruments, which suggests they rely on
soundtracks. The photograph is also formally balanced,
suggesting they conform and are non-threatening.
The Black Veil Brides are a glam metal/ hard rock/ metal
core/ shock rock band. This is highly represented in the
mise en scene of this photograph as their costume is
mainly black with a little bit of white, which portrays their
darker side, also they have a lot of rips in their clothes
along with chains, gloves and bandanas which again
represent the genre as these are popular accessory
choices of artists of this genre. They are all giving direct
address and are pulling very stern, aggressive poses which
makes them seem a lot more aggressive, which again
interlinks with their music as it is very hard-core. This
photograph is informally balanced, showing the bands
attitude and music style emphasising their genre.
