1. MAJOR. ALFREDO NOVOA CAVA
Alfredo NovoaCavawasbornon November26,
1908, inChepén, LaLibertad.
Alfredo NovoaCavawasthe highestrankingofficer
of the Peruvian army diedinthe victorious military
campaignof 1941.
His parentswere Mr. AlbertoNovoaApaestegui
and Mrs. ElviraCava Mestanza. His grandfatherwas
Justiniano Novoa, one of the leadersof the
resistance againstthe armyof Chile inthe cityof
Cajamarca, underthe commandof General Andrés
AvelinoCáceres.
Novoa Cava accomplished his primary studies in the
Educational CenterforBoysNo. 233 of Chepén,
while theirsecondary studies doneinthe Ramón
CastillaNational College of Cajamarca.
His military careerbeganin1928 enteringthe
Chorrillos Military School, graduatedwiththe rank
of lieutenantin1932. He was assigned tothe
cavalry regimentstationed inthe barracks"San
Martin" of Miraflores.
On April 2, 1932, he marriedMaria PeñaArrese in
the city of Sullana, fromthisunion were borntwosons:ElviraPeñaNovoa(1939) andAlfredo
NovoaPeña(1940).
In 1938, he waspromoted to the rankof CAPTAIN. Inearly 1941, he requested histransfertoa
regimentof troops, andwas assigned to the Cavalry regiment"Lanceros Torata"No. 5 (RC5) in San
Pedrode Lloc. In1941, the armedconflictbetween EcuadorandPeru, Ecuadorclaimingthe
Peruvian provinces of Tumbes, JaénandMaynaslike Ecuadorian territory occurs.
The Peruvian government, ledbyPresidentManuel PradoUgarteche ordered the mobilization of
the armedforces and police of Peruto the northern border.
He embarked withhisregimenttoTumbes. OnJuly 24, he crossed the Ecuadorian borderand
participated inthe actions of Zarumilla. Between 27and July 31, 1941, tookthe townsof Chacras,
Hualtaco, Cayanca, SantaRosa, Arenillas andPassage.
On July 31, 1941, Peru and Ecuador signed a treatise of nonaggression.
On September11, 1941, Novoaand hissquadron of soldiers were ambushedinPorotillo, atownin
the province of El Oro, Ecuador.
2. NovoaCava diesonSeptember11, 1941, at the age of 32 years.
His remains remainedinEcuadorian territory until January 1942. At the requestof hismotherand
the districtcouncil of Chepén, they resttoday ina mausoleuminthe city. In1968 the district
council of Lince (Lima) inaugurated asquare that bearshisname. In 1978, a Supreme Decree gave
the name of Mayor Alfredo NovoaCavaArmored Cavalry RegimentNo. 123 currently guardingthe
Peruvian borderinthe high plateau at 4350 metersof height.
