Introduction
Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (A.D.H.D) is a condition that affects both
children and adults that are characterized by problems with attention, impulsivity and over
activity. Over the years, ADHD has been known by several terms, which are, ‘brain damaged
syndrome’, ‘minimal brain dysfunction (MBD), ‘attention deficit disorder’ and others. Being
the most common disorder, especially in America, the main sufferer of this disorder is likely
to be diagnosed in children. We have been approached by The Malaysian Health Ministry to
conduct a survey on the students of Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus. This survey has
been conducted through distribution of questionnaires after sufficient research has been made
on the disorder. The survey contains 15 multiple-choices A.D.H.D related questions and are
distributed equally among 125 male students and 125 female students. The collected data are
then organized and arranged into two different genders. After that, the data are analysed and
interpreted into chart diagrams where the percentage of understanding level related to
A.D.H.D between the genders can be determined. As the final step, all the data results
gathered are presented in an info graphic poster.
4
Objectives
The main objective of this conducted survey is to evaluate the level of awareness on
the Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, A.D.H.D between both male and female students
of Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus. Not only that, this survey enables students to gain
extra knowledge as well as a better understanding about this disorder, such as the symptoms,
the causes and effects of A.D.H.D. All data and information collected are included in this
survey report to show the percentage of answer choices selected by each participant of the
survey. Therefore, this survey report has gave us an opportunity to apply different skills and
techniques in preparing a survey form, analysing data, interpreting data into chart- diagrams
and lastly drawing a conclusion through proper mathematical steps and statistical methodology.
5
Methodology
In a group of 5, a survey was conducted from the 12th of October 2015 till the 15th of
October 2015. 250 survey forms were prepared in hard-copy form and equally divided into
50 pieces per group member. Each member was required to distribute the forms to 25 male
students and 25 female students around the campus. The areas where survey forms were
distributed includes the architectural studios, the library, classrooms and the open seating area
around the campus. The process of each student participating in the survey was photographed
as a proof to show that a survey was carried out.

TABULATION OF DATA
To organize the data, all answers from the survey forms were recorded in a table form. Data
were divided into 2 groups, which were male and female. For each group, every table
contains 4 sets of data. Every table represents one question. 1st, 2nd and the 3rd sets of data are
all recorded over 25 students, while the 4th set of data recorded is out of 50 students. The total
number of students for each option is calculated and recorded at the end of each table.

Children of all backgrounds can have A.D.H.D. Not only that, teens and adults also can be
diagnosed with this disorder. While hyperactivity tends to get better as a child becomes a
teen, problems with inattention, disorganization, and poor impulse control often continue
through the teen years and into adulthood. Research have shown that A.D.H.D can last till
adulthood. Similar to children, elementary school kids and teens, A.D.H.D can make adults’
life challenging by making it hard for them to feel organized, stick with a job or can also have
trouble in relationships. The answer this question should be all of the above.
Calculation have shown a total of 48.8% of overall percentage have gotten the accurate

Question 8
Is A.D.H.D different in girls from guys?
Research has shown that, in general, boys with ADHD have more “externalizing” symptoms
(running, hitting, impulsivity), while girls with ADHD have more “internalizing” symptoms
and side effects (depression, anxiety, low self-esteem). Boys tend to be more physically
aggressive, while girls tend to be more verbally aggressive (teasing, name calling, constant

talking). Normally, girls who have A.D.H.D are at an increased risk for substance abuse,
panic disorders, and obsessive-compulsive disorders. However, the rates of behavioural
problems were lower in girls with ADHD than in boys with the condition, which may account
for the lower rate of diagnosis in girls.
Data have shown that only 77 out of 250 students, which is 30.8% managed to choose “YES”

ADHD is defined as age and developmentally inappropriate inattention, hyperactivity, and
impulsivity that interferes with function at work, school, and in social situations. So, if you
notice that your child gets distracted more quickly than other kids his age, frequently acts
more out of control than his classmates, or seems to space out more frequently, you may want
to get him evaluated for ADHD.
Answer would be childhood. Signs and symptoms can be seen between ages from three to
six.
Out of 250 respondents, only 23.6% of the total managed to select the correct answer. The
percentage of students of both genders that got the answer right are 20.8% for male and
26.4% for female.

Question 13
How does A.D.H.D affect the sufferer of this disorder?
ADHD can produce a number of adverse effects in a person that may disrupt both personal
and work or school relationships. Unaddressed ADHD can be associated with the
development of addictive disorders, particularly if the sufferer attempts to ease the symptoms

with drugs or alcohol. Common effects of ADD include low self-esteem, social anxiety,
which may progress to a full blown anxiety disorder, depression, self-mutilation or self-
harming behaviours and attempts to self-medicate using drugs, alcohol, or binge eating
Therefore the answer would be all of the above as low self-esteem, social anxiety and
development of addictive disorders are some of the effects of A.D.H.D
The interpreted data shows that the total managed to get the correct answer is 50.8%. Female

Question 14
Is there any cure for A.D.H.D?
There is no cure for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), but treatment can help
relieve the symptoms and make the condition much less of a problem in day-to-day life.
ADHD can be treated using medication or therapy, but a combination of both is often the best
way to treat it. Treatment will usually be arranged by a specialist, such as a paediatrician or
psychiatrist.

Question 15
Is A.D.H.D caused by bad parenting?
No studies support the idea that ADHD is the result of poor parenting practices or other
family environment variables. While parents of children with ADHD are likely to give more
negative commands to their ADHD child and less positive attention, this may be due to the
fact that ADHD children are often non-compliant and, therefore, parents are more likely to be

more negative in their interaction with them. Furthermore, the interactions of parents of
ADHD children whose behaviour was not oppositional were no different than they were from
non-ADHD children. It is important to note, however, that symptoms of ADHD and the
degree to which such symptoms can impact the child’s functioning, can be reduced by
parents who provide appropriate accommodations and interventions.
The correct answer for this question is No. Bad parenting is not a cause of A.D.H.D to occur.
Over 70% of the respondents have chosen ‘NO’ as their answers. The female students have
recorded quite a high percentage of correct answers which is 86.4% compared to the male,
which is 66.4%. More female students understand the causes of A.D.H.D better.

CONCLUSION
All data and information gathered has enabled us to determine the level of A.D.H.D
awareness between different genders. As seen from the table and charts above, it can
concluded that more female students were able to answer the questions prepared correctly.
They were able to answer 8 out of 15 questions. Nevertheless, there were a few questions
which only a low percentage of students of both gender managed to get it correct.
As an example, for question 3, where students were asked what disorder is A.D.H.D, overall
percentage of students getting it right was only 41.6%. Most of them chose physical disorder
instead of Psychiatric/ mental disorder. Therefore, most of them got the answer wrong. Still,
25 female students managed to get it right compared to male students, which only 16
managed to get it right. Similar to question 6, when students were asked to select how many
types of A.D.H.D disorder were there, only 89 out of 250 students got it right by choosing 3
types. Most of them chose 2 as their answer. Male got a higher percentage of choosing the
right answer compared to female students.
For example, question 11, when do the symptoms for A.D.H.D normally occur? Only 59
students out of 250 respondents got it right. While the rest chose a different answer. When
compared between male and female, more female students got it right by scoring a low
percentage of 26.4%
For questions 14 (Is there any cure for A.D.H.D?) and 15 (Is A.D.H.D caused by parenting?),
there were quite a number of students of both genders who were able to answer it correctly.
However, for both questions, female students have recorded a higher percentage of getting
the right answer which is 73.6% and 86.4% respectively.
55
Overall, Female students recorded a higher percentage of correct answers in 8 questions
while male students recorded a higher percentage in 7 questions. In addition to that, the
calculation of the average of percentage for each gender who understood A.D.H.D has shown
that an average of 52.37% female students managed to answer the questions correctly
compared to male students, with an average percentage of 52.05%. In another method, the
mean can also be determined through the sum of students who answered correctly over the
number of data. The average number of female students is 65.4667 while the average number
of male students is 65. Therefore, it can be concluded that more female students are
aware of A.D.H.D, Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder compared to male students.
As for our own individual learning outcome, we have learnt the proper steps of collecting
statistic data, analysing as well as interpreting them. Last but not least, we also had the
chance to learn the correct method of preparing a survey report.

  • 3. 3 Introduction Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (A.D.H.D) is a condition that affects both children and adults that are characterized by problems with attention, impulsivity and over activity. Over the years, ADHD has been known by several terms, which are, ‘brain damaged syndrome’, ‘minimal brain dysfunction (MBD), ‘attention deficit disorder’ and others. Being the most common disorder, especially in America, the main sufferer of this disorder is likely to be diagnosed in children. We have been approached by The Malaysian Health Ministry to conduct a survey on the students of Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus. This survey has been conducted through distribution of questionnaires after sufficient research has been made on the disorder. The survey contains 15 multiple-choices A.D.H.D related questions and are distributed equally among 125 male students and 125 female students. The collected data are then organized and arranged into two different genders. After that, the data are analysed and interpreted into chart diagrams where the percentage of understanding level related to A.D.H.D between the genders can be determined. As the final step, all the data results gathered are presented in an info graphic poster.
  • 4. 4 Objectives The main objective of this conducted survey is to evaluate the level of awareness on the Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, A.D.H.D between both male and female students of Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus. Not only that, this survey enables students to gain extra knowledge as well as a better understanding about this disorder, such as the symptoms, the causes and effects of A.D.H.D. All data and information collected are included in this survey report to show the percentage of answer choices selected by each participant of the survey. Therefore, this survey report has gave us an opportunity to apply different skills and techniques in preparing a survey form, analysing data, interpreting data into chart- diagrams and lastly drawing a conclusion through proper mathematical steps and statistical methodology.
  • 5. 5 Methodology In a group of 5, a survey was conducted from the 12th of October 2015 till the 15th of October 2015. 250 survey forms were prepared in hard-copy form and equally divided into 50 pieces per group member. Each member was required to distribute the forms to 25 male students and 25 female students around the campus. The areas where survey forms were distributed includes the architectural studios, the library, classrooms and the open seating area around the campus. The process of each student participating in the survey was photographed as a proof to show that a survey was carried out.

As seen from the table and charts above, it can concluded that more female students were able to answer the questions prepared correctly. They were able to answer 8 out of 15 questions. Nevertheless, there were a few questions which only a low percentage of students of both gender managed to get it correct. As an example, for question 3, where students were asked what disorder is A.D.H.D, overall percentage of students getting it right was only 41.6%. Most of them chose physical disorder instead of Psychiatric/ mental disorder. Therefore, most of them got the answer wrong. Still, 25 female students managed to get it right compared to male students, which only 16 managed to get it right. Similar to question 6, when students were asked to select how many types of A.D.H.D disorder were there, only 89 out of 250 students got it right by choosing 3 types. Most of them chose 2 as their answer. Male got a higher percentage of choosing the right answer compared to female students. For example, question 11, when do the symptoms for A.D.H.D normally occur? Only 59 students out of 250 respondents got it right. While the rest chose a different answer. When compared between male and female, more female students got it right by scoring a low percentage of 26.4% For questions 14 (Is there any cure for A.D.H.D?) and 15 (Is A.D.H.D caused by parenting?), there were quite a number of students of both genders who were able to answer it correctly. However, for both questions, female students have recorded a higher percentage of getting the right answer which is 73.6% and 86.4% respectively.
  • 55. 55 Overall, Female students recorded a higher percentage of correct answers in 8 questions while male students recorded a higher percentage in 7 questions. In addition to that, the calculation of the average of percentage for each gender who understood A.D.H.D has shown that an average of 52.37% female students managed to answer the questions correctly compared to male students, with an average percentage of 52.05%. In another method, the mean can also be determined through the sum of students who answered correctly over the number of data. The average number of female students is 65.4667 while the average number of male students is 65. Therefore, it can be concluded that more female students are aware of A.D.H.D, Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder compared to male students. As for our own individual learning outcome, we have learnt the proper steps of collecting statistic data, analysing as well as interpreting them. Last but not least, we also had the chance to learn the correct method of preparing a survey report.
