3. Genre Conventions
Most fashion magazines adopt a familiar, minimalist style that enable its target audience to recognize the genre easily. The
following are some of the most used codes and conventions abundant within the fashion genre:
❖ Masthead- the masthead is the title block for the magazine,
usually it’s the most eye catching convention on the cover
and it must be distinctive.
❖ Pugs- used to catch the reader’s eye, positioned either at the
top right or left corner along with the price and logo.
❖ Secondary lead- a sneak preview of an inside article, usually
features a picture
❖ Sidebar- an additional box next to the main feature of the
magazine
❖ Splash- main story of the front page accompanied with a
photograph and a headline
❖ Stand first- a sentence after a headline and before an article
that ‘sells’ a feature to the reader
❖ Strapline- subheading positioned below the initial headline
❖ High-key lighting
❖ Celebrities on the front cover
❖ Colour scheme changes depending on the season
❖ Direct address
❖ Big, bold masthead on top of the front cover.
