MY FACTUAL MAGAZINE ARTICLE

GENRE, NAME AND THE TARGET AUDIENCE
• I have decided to do a grunge/indie fashion magazine but I have decided to do a
Christmas edition, I will include someone's top five Christmas songs for this to correlate
with the ‘Christmas theme’. The main audience of popular and similar magazines for this
genre is the same as my target audience, I have chosen this age range because I am
hoping that their audience will also read my magazine since it's within the same genre. I
have chosen to target my magazine towards 15-25-year old's, I should keep it
interesting but not boring because this age range have short attention spans however it
can't be too simple because it'll be childlike and they won't read it. I'll set my magazine
out using columns, they are simple to read and are used in popular magazines like
vogue and cosmopolitan, columns make the writing look more spread out, this will then
look like there is less writing than it would if it was written in normal paragraphs. I am
going to include my model in the same sort of clothing that grunge models wear in the
magazine examples I have given, I need everything in my magazine to correlate
otherwise it won't look professional at all. My actual article I am going to do a top five,
I’m not going to bring up fashion until I put in taglines, I will say where my models
clothes are from.
CHARLIE NOBLE
• Age: 17
• Gender: Female
• Hobbies: Music, Eating and Sleeping
• Opinion: “I think your influences are well picked and very successful,
which is a good way to ensure your magazine comes out looking
professional and at the same standard as the two you’ve looked at for
inspiration, I love the music side of the magazine but I don’t like the
fashion section as I'm not very interested in the subject.”
KIERAN WEST
• Age: 17
• Gender: Male
• Hobbies: Fashion, Music and Gaming
• Opinion: “I love the ideas for your double page spread although I
would prefer if it was more Fashion orientated, I like the photoshoot
ideas and how you're taking inspiration from two of my favourite
magazines, vogue and Cosmo.”
VOGUE
• Vogue is one of the most popular lifestyle magazines, one of its main
focuses is fashion so I have decided to take some inspiration from this.
Vogue has 22 international editions including Vogue (U.S), Vogue (U.K) and
Vogue (Aus) which are the most popular 3. The name Vogue means 'Style'
in French this relates back to how one of the main focuses of the magazine
is fashion, I think this is also smart because it proves that it is international.
"In 2015, Vogue magazine listed their “15 Roots Reggae Songs You Should
Know”; and in an interview with Patricia Chin of VP Records, Vogue
highlighted an abbreviated list of early “reggae royalty” that recorded at
Studio 17 in Kingston, Jamaica which included Bob Marley, Peter Tosh,
Gregory Isaacs, Dennis Brown, Burning Spear, Toots and the Maytals, The
Heptones, and Bunny Wailer. In addition to their coverage of historically
significant artists, Vogue is a source for contemporary music news on
artists such as Jay-Z, Eminem, Tom Petty, and Taylor Swift, as well as being
an influencer that introduces new artists to the scene such as Suzi
Analogue in 2017." - Wiki
COSMOPOLITAN
• This magazine is an international fashion magazine for women, it explores
many different fashions throughout each page and includes some
indie/grunge fashion. I love how this magazine set out their two-page
spreads, they're really easy to read but really professional and interesting. I
love how they use phrases to draw you in to reading the article, I might
use this in my two-page spread. Cosmopolitan has 64 international
editions, breaking Vogues amount by more than double. "The magazine,
and in particular its cover stories, have become increasingly sexually explicit
in tone, and covers have models wearing revealing clothes. Kroger, the
largest grocery chain in the United States, used to cover up Cosmopolitan
at checkout stands because of complaints about sexually inappropriate
headlines. The UK edition of Cosmopolitan, which began in 1972, was the
first Cosmopolitan magazine to be branched out to another country. It was
well known for sexual explicitness, with strong sexual language, male
nudity, and coverage of such subjects as rape." - Wiki
CODES AND CONVENTIONS
• Codes and Conventions
• Masthead – the masthead is the title block for the magazine, usually this is the most eye-catching convention on a page and has to be distinct.
• Box-out – a colored box behind some text, usually used to make the text stand out
• Pugs – prices and logos, they're positioned in the top right or left corner
• Secondary lead – a sneak peek on the cover of an article inside the magazine
• Sidebar – An additional box next to the main feature on the magazine
• Splash – main article covered on the front page with a headline and sometimes an image to match
• Spread- an article that covers more than one page
• Stand first – a phrase that is in the middle of the headline and the article which is designed to sell the article to the reader or get them to read on
• Strap line- Subheading
• Tag – using words to entice the reader such as; shocking, breaking or exclusive
• By line – name of the reporter
• Caption – a comment under a picture used in the magazine giving extra information
• Credits – used to inform the reader who an image is buy, giving credit to a photographer
• Crosshead – a subheading that is outside the body of text, normally to the side of the main text
• Exclusive – an article or story that the magazine has received first and posted in an issue, you will find the news out first if you read that magazine
• Feature – current affairs
• Headline – main statement, has to be the most eye-catching, this is usually done by making it very large and bold
• Kicker – an article designed to be eye-catching for the reader
• Lead story – Main story
• Lure – used as a marketing scheme, a word of phrase that gets the reader to read an article or buy the magazine issue
MY FIRST
BRIEF
SELF MARK
I have decided to
take inspiration
from
cosmopolitan and
vogue articles as
these are
extremely popular
magazines who
have worked with
nearly every A-
celeb to exist.
I think I could have set
the article out better, it
looks fairly boring and I
don’t think it would
draw people in to read
it
Too many
question marks
and
exclamation
points
The Title of the article could
be more intriguing and
Christmas needs a capital
Sentences are way
too long, they drag
on and are boring.
Spelt the artists name wrong
There is no number
Goes from 4 to 6
PEER MARK
Make sure to keep an eye on
spelling.
Watch out for grammar
mistakes.
You have included a nice amount
of detail in each review.
Make sure to
capitalise ‘Noble’ as
it is a name.
*Try adding an introduction
and conclusion to the article.
*Make sure there will be
enough room for images and
text on your article when it is
done.

PHOTOSHOOT
INSPIRATION
I love how these pictures are very
natural, it hasn’t been edited much
and this is what I aspire for my
double spread photoshoot to look
like. I like how the models are I
will capture Charlie in a grassy
area maybe a field or woodland,
this is because I want Charlie and
what she is wearing to stand out
more than the background since
one of my magazines focus’ is
fashion. I will picture close ups of
Charlie’s clothes including her Dr
Martens which are associated with
grunge/dark fashion. I will put
captions under each image
explaining where each item of
clothing is from, how much it is
and what sizes are available.
MILLUM AND FERGUSON
• Marjorie Ferguson identified four different types of facial expression in
British women’s magazines: Chocolate box, Invitational, Romantic or
Sexual and Super-smiler.
Half or full smile,
lips together or
slightly apart, teeth
barely visible and
full or three-quarter
face to the camera.
Mood: blandly
pleased, lack of
uniqueness and a
perfect/smooth
look.
Emphasis on the
eyes, mouth shut or
with only a hint of a
smile, head to one
side or looking
back to the camera.
Mood: Mystery or
mischief, contact
potential rather
than sexual
promise, cover

Full face, wide open,
toothy smile, head
thrust forward or
chin thrown back,
hair often wind-
blown. Mood:
aggressive,
demanding and
hard sell.
More general
classification devised
to include male and
female ‘two-somes’,
dreamy, heavy-
lidded, overtly
sensual or sexual.

THE FACIAL EXPRESSION I'M AIMING
FOR
CHANGED ARTICLE IDEA
I decided to change my article again to fit within my target
audience and what is more popular in the common day. I will be
doing an entirely fashion magazine, still having the same name.
As many of my audience will more than likely own a pair of Dr
Martens, I decided to use this as my topic of choice for my article.
I am going to include many different Dr Marten shoes and
include the price and other information under the picture.
FONT RESEARCH
All of these magazines I have researched and shown on this slide are
successful. Vogue, ELLE and Bazaar are all fashion magazines who
feature many celebrities and the most successful models. The font of
all of these magazines are all unique in their own way. Vogue has a
very plain and sharp font, this relates back to ‘Vogue’ as a word, it’s a
very sharp and witty word so the font and name of this magazine
correlate with each other. Thrasher is a skateboard magazine, most of
its readers are men, the font for this magazine is bold but different.
Instead of being straight like all the others, this curves and has very
rounded lettering, although not in a feminine way. You can tell this is
targeted more to men because of how striking and uneven the
lettering is, women's magazines fonts are normally more neat, plain
and feminine. Bazaar is a good example of a stereotypical women's
magazine, its very neat, bold and simple. I like how parts of the letters
are thicker than others, it comes across very quirky, the last letter ‘R’
has a feminine flick, this signalling also who the magazines target
audience is. ELLE magazine is the only one I have researched which
includes colour in the heading/title/font, the colour used being Red.
The colour Red signifies importance, lust, love and danger, I think this
would intrigue the reader because the colour has so many different
meanings to it. Unplugged, along with thrasher are the most manly
ones, I could take some inspiration from these but I don’t want to do a
similar font to these as I think they're very manly and don’t fit the style
and genre of my magazine.
FONTS
I LIKE
• ADABI MT CONDENS
• American Typewriter
• Andale Mono
• Apple Chancery
• Athelas
• Copperplate Gothic Bold
• Haettenschweiler
• Nanum Brush Script
I think all of these fonts are very unique and I like them all for
different reasons. From magazine research I have found that
most top selling magazines have a bold and clear font. I think
this is because it makes the name and style more memorable,
then making it become more popular. If the font was difficult to
read then people might have trouble reading it and therefore
pronounce the name wrong, the name is a very important part
of a magazine as it has to match the style of the magazine and
also the name, for example you couldn't’ have a magazine
named ‘Death” and have a fancy, girly font because it doesn't’t
correspond with the name. Since mine is called Indiago, I want a
simple, bold but unique font. My favourite font out of the ones I
have tried is the Copperplate gothic bold, this is because its well
spaced out, easy to read and very bold. This font will definitely
be memorable and will get my magazine noticed in shops since
the font sticks out so much.
COLOUR SCHEME
This is a subtle
pastel colour
scheme, this is
quite childlike
but pleasing to
the eye.
Although this
colour scheme
isn't very eye-
catching or
popular in
successful
magazines, I
think this is
because of the
reason I have
mentioned, it
isn't very out
there and
doesn't catch
This colour
scheme is like
the pastel
colour scheme
as it’s very
childlike but its
also very bold
which the pastel
one isn’t. This
would catch
peoples eye
more than the
pastel one
because the
colours in this
scheme are very
bright and
they're the four
main colours,
however I think
This colour
scheme is very
plain and
commonly used
in the magazines I
have been
researching,
White, Grey, Black
and Red all create
contrast which
then makes the
magazine stand
out more. I am
also doing a
Christmas edition
of the magazine
so the Red could
correlate with that
idea, this is the
colour scheme I
My First Shoot
FONTS I HAVE USED
I stuck to the colour scheme I chose of black, grey, white and red in my final
magazine, using three of the colours in my title name, which is the name of my
magazine “INDIAGO”. I used feminine and clear fonts so they're easy to read.

Magazine pitch indiago

  • 1. MY FACTUAL MAGAZINE ARTICLE Bethany Reay
  • 2. GENRE, NAME AND THE TARGET AUDIENCE • I have decided to do a grunge/indie fashion magazine but I have decided to do a Christmas edition, I will include someone's top five Christmas songs for this to correlate with the ‘Christmas theme’. The main audience of popular and similar magazines for this genre is the same as my target audience, I have chosen this age range because I am hoping that their audience will also read my magazine since it's within the same genre. I have chosen to target my magazine towards 15-25-year old's, I should keep it interesting but not boring because this age range have short attention spans however it can't be too simple because it'll be childlike and they won't read it. I'll set my magazine out using columns, they are simple to read and are used in popular magazines like vogue and cosmopolitan, columns make the writing look more spread out, this will then look like there is less writing than it would if it was written in normal paragraphs. I am going to include my model in the same sort of clothing that grunge models wear in the magazine examples I have given, I need everything in my magazine to correlate otherwise it won't look professional at all. My actual article I am going to do a top five, I’m not going to bring up fashion until I put in taglines, I will say where my models clothes are from.
  • 3. CHARLIE NOBLE • Age: 17 • Gender: Female • Hobbies: Music, Eating and Sleeping • Opinion: “I think your influences are well picked and very successful, which is a good way to ensure your magazine comes out looking professional and at the same standard as the two you’ve looked at for inspiration, I love the music side of the magazine but I don’t like the fashion section as I'm not very interested in the subject.”
  • 4. KIERAN WEST • Age: 17 • Gender: Male • Hobbies: Fashion, Music and Gaming • Opinion: “I love the ideas for your double page spread although I would prefer if it was more Fashion orientated, I like the photoshoot ideas and how you're taking inspiration from two of my favourite magazines, vogue and Cosmo.”
  • 5. VOGUE • Vogue is one of the most popular lifestyle magazines, one of its main focuses is fashion so I have decided to take some inspiration from this. Vogue has 22 international editions including Vogue (U.S), Vogue (U.K) and Vogue (Aus) which are the most popular 3. The name Vogue means 'Style' in French this relates back to how one of the main focuses of the magazine is fashion, I think this is also smart because it proves that it is international. "In 2015, Vogue magazine listed their “15 Roots Reggae Songs You Should Know”; and in an interview with Patricia Chin of VP Records, Vogue highlighted an abbreviated list of early “reggae royalty” that recorded at Studio 17 in Kingston, Jamaica which included Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Gregory Isaacs, Dennis Brown, Burning Spear, Toots and the Maytals, The Heptones, and Bunny Wailer. In addition to their coverage of historically significant artists, Vogue is a source for contemporary music news on artists such as Jay-Z, Eminem, Tom Petty, and Taylor Swift, as well as being an influencer that introduces new artists to the scene such as Suzi Analogue in 2017." - Wiki
  • 6. COSMOPOLITAN • This magazine is an international fashion magazine for women, it explores many different fashions throughout each page and includes some indie/grunge fashion. I love how this magazine set out their two-page spreads, they're really easy to read but really professional and interesting. I love how they use phrases to draw you in to reading the article, I might use this in my two-page spread. Cosmopolitan has 64 international editions, breaking Vogues amount by more than double. "The magazine, and in particular its cover stories, have become increasingly sexually explicit in tone, and covers have models wearing revealing clothes. Kroger, the largest grocery chain in the United States, used to cover up Cosmopolitan at checkout stands because of complaints about sexually inappropriate headlines. The UK edition of Cosmopolitan, which began in 1972, was the first Cosmopolitan magazine to be branched out to another country. It was well known for sexual explicitness, with strong sexual language, male nudity, and coverage of such subjects as rape." - Wiki
  • 7. CODES AND CONVENTIONS • Codes and Conventions • Masthead – the masthead is the title block for the magazine, usually this is the most eye-catching convention on a page and has to be distinct. • Box-out – a colored box behind some text, usually used to make the text stand out • Pugs – prices and logos, they're positioned in the top right or left corner • Secondary lead – a sneak peek on the cover of an article inside the magazine • Sidebar – An additional box next to the main feature on the magazine • Splash – main article covered on the front page with a headline and sometimes an image to match • Spread- an article that covers more than one page • Stand first – a phrase that is in the middle of the headline and the article which is designed to sell the article to the reader or get them to read on • Strap line- Subheading • Tag – using words to entice the reader such as; shocking, breaking or exclusive • By line – name of the reporter • Caption – a comment under a picture used in the magazine giving extra information • Credits – used to inform the reader who an image is buy, giving credit to a photographer • Crosshead – a subheading that is outside the body of text, normally to the side of the main text • Exclusive – an article or story that the magazine has received first and posted in an issue, you will find the news out first if you read that magazine • Feature – current affairs • Headline – main statement, has to be the most eye-catching, this is usually done by making it very large and bold • Kicker – an article designed to be eye-catching for the reader • Lead story – Main story • Lure – used as a marketing scheme, a word of phrase that gets the reader to read an article or buy the magazine issue
  • 9. SELF MARK I have decided to take inspiration from cosmopolitan and vogue articles as these are extremely popular magazines who have worked with nearly every A- celeb to exist. I think I could have set the article out better, it looks fairly boring and I don’t think it would draw people in to read it Too many question marks and exclamation points The Title of the article could be more intriguing and Christmas needs a capital Sentences are way too long, they drag on and are boring. Spelt the artists name wrong There is no number Goes from 4 to 6
  • 10. PEER MARK Make sure to keep an eye on spelling. Watch out for grammar mistakes. You have included a nice amount of detail in each review. Make sure to capitalise ‘Noble’ as it is a name. *Try adding an introduction and conclusion to the article. *Make sure there will be enough room for images and text on your article when it is done.
  • 12. CHANGED IDEAS I have decided to do this article in first person so I am a popular artist writing this favourite songs article.

  • 14. PHOTOSHOOT INSPIRATION I love how these pictures are very natural, it hasn’t been edited much and this is what I aspire for my double spread photoshoot to look like. I like how the models are I will capture Charlie in a grassy area maybe a field or woodland, this is because I want Charlie and what she is wearing to stand out more than the background since one of my magazines focus’ is fashion. I will picture close ups of Charlie’s clothes including her Dr Martens which are associated with grunge/dark fashion. I will put captions under each image explaining where each item of clothing is from, how much it is and what sizes are available.
  • 15. MILLUM AND FERGUSON • Marjorie Ferguson identified four different types of facial expression in British women’s magazines: Chocolate box, Invitational, Romantic or Sexual and Super-smiler. Half or full smile, lips together or slightly apart, teeth barely visible and full or three-quarter face to the camera. Mood: blandly pleased, lack of uniqueness and a perfect/smooth look. Emphasis on the eyes, mouth shut or with only a hint of a smile, head to one side or looking back to the camera. Mood: Mystery or mischief, contact potential rather than sexual promise, cover equivalent of advertising’s soft Full face, wide open, toothy smile, head thrust forward or chin thrown back, hair often wind- blown. Mood: aggressive, demanding and hard sell. More general classification devised to include male and female ‘two-somes’, dreamy, heavy- lidded, overtly sensual or sexual. Mood: possibly available and definitely available Chocolatebox Invitational Romanticor Sexual Super- Smiler
  • 16. THE FACIAL EXPRESSION I'M AIMING FOR
  • 17. CHANGED ARTICLE IDEA I decided to change my article again to fit within my target audience and what is more popular in the common day. I will be doing an entirely fashion magazine, still having the same name. As many of my audience will more than likely own a pair of Dr Martens, I decided to use this as my topic of choice for my article. I am going to include many different Dr Marten shoes and include the price and other information under the picture.
  • 18. FONT RESEARCH All of these magazines I have researched and shown on this slide are successful. Vogue, ELLE and Bazaar are all fashion magazines who feature many celebrities and the most successful models. The font of all of these magazines are all unique in their own way. Vogue has a very plain and sharp font, this relates back to ‘Vogue’ as a word, it’s a very sharp and witty word so the font and name of this magazine correlate with each other. Thrasher is a skateboard magazine, most of its readers are men, the font for this magazine is bold but different. Instead of being straight like all the others, this curves and has very rounded lettering, although not in a feminine way. You can tell this is targeted more to men because of how striking and uneven the lettering is, women's magazines fonts are normally more neat, plain and feminine. Bazaar is a good example of a stereotypical women's magazine, its very neat, bold and simple. I like how parts of the letters are thicker than others, it comes across very quirky, the last letter ‘R’ has a feminine flick, this signalling also who the magazines target audience is. ELLE magazine is the only one I have researched which includes colour in the heading/title/font, the colour used being Red. The colour Red signifies importance, lust, love and danger, I think this would intrigue the reader because the colour has so many different meanings to it. Unplugged, along with thrasher are the most manly ones, I could take some inspiration from these but I don’t want to do a similar font to these as I think they're very manly and don’t fit the style and genre of my magazine.
  • 19. FONTS I LIKE • ADABI MT CONDENS • American Typewriter • Andale Mono • Apple Chancery • Athelas • Copperplate Gothic Bold • Haettenschweiler • Nanum Brush Script I think all of these fonts are very unique and I like them all for different reasons. From magazine research I have found that most top selling magazines have a bold and clear font. I think this is because it makes the name and style more memorable, then making it become more popular. If the font was difficult to read then people might have trouble reading it and therefore pronounce the name wrong, the name is a very important part of a magazine as it has to match the style of the magazine and also the name, for example you couldn't’ have a magazine named ‘Death” and have a fancy, girly font because it doesn't’t correspond with the name. Since mine is called Indiago, I want a simple, bold but unique font. My favourite font out of the ones I have tried is the Copperplate gothic bold, this is because its well spaced out, easy to read and very bold. This font will definitely be memorable and will get my magazine noticed in shops since the font sticks out so much.
  • 20. COLOUR SCHEME This is a subtle pastel colour scheme, this is quite childlike but pleasing to the eye. Although this colour scheme isn't very eye- catching or popular in successful magazines, I think this is because of the reason I have mentioned, it isn't very out there and doesn't catch This colour scheme is like the pastel colour scheme as it’s very childlike but its also very bold which the pastel one isn’t. This would catch peoples eye more than the pastel one because the colours in this scheme are very bright and they're the four main colours, however I think This colour scheme is very plain and commonly used in the magazines I have been researching, White, Grey, Black and Red all create contrast which then makes the magazine stand out more. I am also doing a Christmas edition of the magazine so the Red could correlate with that idea, this is the colour scheme I
  • 22. FONTS I HAVE USED I stuck to the colour scheme I chose of black, grey, white and red in my final magazine, using three of the colours in my title name, which is the name of my magazine “INDIAGO”. I used feminine and clear fonts so they're easy to read.
