2. • In linguistics, a semantic field is a set of words grouped by
meaning referring to a specific subject.
• A semantic field is a lexical set of words grouped semantically
that refers to a specific subject
• semantic field is a collection of words which are related to
one another be it through their similar meanings, or through
a more abstract relation. For example, if a writer is writing a
poem or a novel about a ship, they will surely use words such as
ocean, waves, sea, tide, blue, storm, wind, sails, etc.
• A semantic field is a set of words (or lexemes) related in
meaning. The phrase is also known as a word field, lexical field,
field of meaning, and semantic system.

3. For Example:
• Animals _____lion, cat, fish, bird, etc
•colors_______blue, red, white, black, etc.
•Examples of Semantics: A toy block could be called a block, a cube, a
toy. A child could be called a child, kid, boy, girl, son, daughter. The
word "run" has many meanings-physically running, depart or go (I have
to run, spent (it has run its course), or even a snag in a pair of hose (a
run in my hose).

•E.g : Months of the year begin from January until December.

Unordered
E.g : animals can be arranged depending on families such as the
animals of the cat family.

Build an emotion: Semantic fields also help to create
undertones to pieces of literature. This effectively builds
emotion, and provides subtle indications to a reader as to what
may be about to happen.

The term “semantic field” was introduced by G. IPSEN in 1924s and the
origin of the field theory of semantics is the lexical field theory introduced
by JOST TRIER in the 1930s.

A semantic field denotes a segment of reality symbolized by a set of
related words. The words in a semantic field share a common semantic
property. A general and intuitive description is that words in a semantic
field are not necessarily synonymous, but are all used to talk about the
same general phenomenon.
