4. WHERE THE COMMENTS WERE FROM
How this helped, what came of the fact that they were from YouTube
First and foremost, the fact that we gained feedback, allowed us to see the
trailer from the viewpoint of the audience who’d be watching it. This
helped us to identify what issues the trailer had in engaging the
spectator, and the contribution of the audience along with our vision,
would show how our vision met the expectations of the audience.
The fact that they were direct from Youtube allowed us to see specific
examples of what could be improved like the overall pacing and editing
state of the trailer, rather than just generic statements that wouldn’t aid
the improving stages.
5. WHAT WE LEARNED AND HOW WE ADAPTED
AND CHANGED.
What the feedback was about
This leads into the next topic: what the comments were actually about.
Mostly, it was down to the editing, and editing elements of the trailer, rather than
anything that would need re-shooting or concept worries ETC. This gave us
great relief as this showed that the audience enjoyed, and found our new
take on the narrative structure if the trailer entertaining.
A large comment we needed to better, was the editing pace. We were told that
the pacing of the trailer was too slow for one of the horror genre, despite
making it a unique, fresh take on horror conventions. It had to be more
exciting and engage the audience more. We then went back and made the
editing toward the end of the trailer more of a quicker paced, thrilling end
sequence by using lots of quick cuts.
6. Luckily, our final shot of the hand reaching out from outside was well
received, as was kept throughout all the drafts of the trailer.
Other comments from the audience looked at how certain shots would be
more effective in terms of the look of the trailer. This is exemplified from
when we were told that a shot of the character pacing would be more
effective than the first shot of him sitting down. After fixing this and
looking back at the trailer, we realised that the audience was right in
saying so, as the mystery of why he’s stressed is more prevalent.
Evidence of the additions can be seen in the blog below.
