The document analyzes editing techniques used in the trailers for The Conjuring and The Hallow. It discusses how:
1) Time editing is used cleverly through flash forwards to hint at future events and intrigue audiences.
2) Continuity editing gives the trailers a sense of realism and forces audiences to think back on past scenes.
3) Time allocation reveals the dominant characters by showing who has the most screen time.
4) Straight cutting and pace build tension, while trailer structure teases audiences with hints but not all answers to keep them interested.
2. Time is used in this trailer vey cleverly, it is an important feature used in the
trailer, we see the flash-forward time feature used very early on in the trailer. From this
we get a glance/clue of the future events that are going to occur in the film. The
reason for it being used at the start of the film is to more or less ‘jump straight in’ to
the trailer, meaning that the audience become excited but nervous at the same time
about what's to come. By jumping forward it gets the audience guessing about why we
have flashed forward and what they have missed and makes them want to see more.
Continuity editing is another feature used in this trailer, by using this it gives
the trailer a sense of realism and that throughout it time is moving forward. By doing
this it makes the audience think back to the past events they already seen.

CONTINUITY EDITING
3. Throughout the whole of the trailer we see a range of different characters,
which makes it hard to see who the main character/dominant character of the film is.
However with the use of time allocation we are able to see the dominant character,
because whoever spends the most time is mostly the main character in the film. As the
trailer progresses it becomes a lot clearer as to who the characters are and which ones
are the main characters.
We also see the use of straight cutting in this trailer, this is done so it makes
the audience feel as though everything that is happening is real. We see straight
cutting mostly being used during conversations to provide the sense of realism.

AND STRAIGHT CUTTING
4. In this trailer we see pace used an awful lot throughout this trailer,
this is a very common technique used in horror trailers as it builds up tension
for the audience. It is used almost straight away, by using a fast pace it begins
to excites the audience as they are curious about what else is to come keeping
them on the edge of their seats.
Throughout the trailer there is structure, this is allows the trailer to
be tense and unpredictable till the end of the trailer. The purpose of the
trailer structure so that the film will follow a pattern that the trailer builds
upon. This causes the audience want more and more until the final scene
where sometimes not all their questions are answered because they are given
hints and clues but not answers this keeps the audience interested.
