Philippine Folk Dance
PAMPILPILALECAN
Background
Pampilpelalecan is about the pining or
longing for a love one. At the turn of the
century special dance gatherings brought
people together to entertain out-of-town
guests. Ladies managed to throw
meaningful glances at men, a message
that draw each close to the other. When at
last they stand face to face and barely
touching hands, courtship becomes even
more passionate.
Dance Properties:
Costume:
 Female: Maria Clara of the colegiala
variation
 Male: Barong Tagalog and dark-
colored pants
Music: 3/4; composed of three parts: A,
B, C.
Count: 1, 2, 3, to a measure
Formation: Partners stand opposite
each other about six feet apart. Girls is
at the right side of Boy when facing
Movements/Steps Particular to Dance:
● Touching, slapping palms in a
manner of saying “Filipino
custom, no touch;”
● Arms in front alternately
flapping up and down;
● Going under arched-arms (soot-
soot)
● Dance Terms: Kewet, Salok,
Do-si-do/Vis-à-vis, Arms in
lateral position
● Dance Steps: Mincing, Waltz,

Introduction
Partners face each other
a. Take two steps forward. Girl holds skirt, Boy places
hands on waist (one measure for every step)
b. Step R foot backward and bow to partner. Open arms
in 2nd position and kewet both
c. Turn right in place using tiny steps with both heels
raised, arms in 5th position. Finish the turn with the
Girl facing audience and the Boy facing away from
the audience.
d. Point R foot forward, arms as in (a).
e. Twist trunk to the left (cts. 1,2), untwist trunk (ct. 3).
Repeat same (cts.1,2,3).

Partners take a quarter turn right so that L shoulders are toward each other.
a. Slide R foot across L in front (cts.1,2), step L close to R (ct. 5). Girl holds
skirt while Boy places hands on waist.
b. Repeat (a). Finish with L shoulders close to each other.
c. Execute two cross turns to the left. Salok R arm to 5th position for every
turn.
d. Repeat (a - c) starting with the L foot moving outward. Reverse the turn in
(c).
e. Partners face each other. Step R sideward (cts 1,2), step L across R in
front (ct 3). Step R sideward again (ct 1), raise L foot forward (cts 2, 3).
Arms are in 4th position, R arm high doing kewet once for every measure.
f. Repeat (e) to the left. Reverse the position of arms.
g. Step-brush-hop forward to form one line at center by R shoulders. Arms
are down at sides (cts. 1,2,3)
h. Quarter turn right to face partner. Waltz sideward left, arms in 5th position.
i. Quarter turn right and repeat (g) forward to proper places.

a. Take two steps in place (cts. 3,and), step R and raise L foot forward (ct. 1),
pause (ct. 2). Girl holds skirt, Boy places hands on waist. Repeat same
starting with L foot (cts 3,and, 1, 2), quarter turn right, step R foot in place
(ct 3).
b. Slide L foot sideward left (cts. 1,2), close R to L (ct.3); slide L foot sideward
(cts 1,2), close R to L (ct 3).
c. Starting with the R foot, take six walking steps forward moving half-way
clockwise to change places with partner. Finish facing each other.
d. Step-brush-hop forward (cts. 1,2,3); kneel on R, arms in 5th position (ct. 1),
stand (cts.2,3 ). Partners are by R shoulders.
e. Join R hands with partner. Waltz right forward passing right to right
(cts.1,2,3). Turn right about and waltz left backward (cts. 1,2,3).
f. Repeat (e).
g. Release hold. Take two waltz steps forward to partner's place. Arms are in
lateral position moving sideward right and left.
h. Waltz turn right about in place. Arms as (g).

Partners face each other.
a. Take three walking steps forward
passing right to right (cts. 1,2,3). Take
three walking steps backward passing
left to left (cts. 1,2,3). Arms are down at
sides.
b. Execute two fast waltz turns right in
place, arms are in 5th position.

Partners face each other.
a. Execute eight cross waltz steps moving clockwise. Swing both
arms downward to sideward, wrist leading, palms down (1M).
Swing both arms forward-upward, palms up (1M) (Boy starts
forward-upward, while Girl starts downward to sideward).
b. Point R foot forward. Bring R arm downward, palms down, L
arm upward, palms up, wrist leading.
c. Repeat (b) three times more reversing the arm movement
alternately every measure. Transfer weight on R foot on the last
measure.
d. Step L across R in front (ct. 1), take two steps in place (RL)
(cts.2.3). Hands as in Figure I (a).
e. Repeat (d) starting with the R foot.
f. Step L across R in front (ct. 1), take two steps turning right

Partners turn R shoulders toward each other.
a. Slide R foot sideward, pushing R hand and stretching arm sideward-
upward right (cts. 1,2), step L close to R and bring R hand close to chest
(ct.3).
b. Repeat (a). Finish in back to back position with partner.
c. Turn right about and take two close steps sideward left to partner's place.
Swing R arm downward-sideward-upward to 5th position.
d. Repeat (a - c). Finish in proper places.
e. Step R sideward (ct. 1), point L foot in rear (cts.2,3). Kewet both hands,
arms in reverse "T“ position.
f. Repeat the kewet.
g. Repeat (e) and (f) starting with the L foot.
h. Take two step-brush-swing-hops forward to partner's place passing right to
right. Hands as in Figure I (a).
i. Take a three-step turn right about in place (cts. 1,2,3). Close L to R (ct. 1),
pause (cts 2.3)
j. Repeat all (a - I). Finish in one line at center. Girl in front of Boy. Join

d. Turn right about to face away from audience. This time the Girl is behind
the Boy. Join hands as in (a) (cts. 1,2,3). Pause (cts. 1,2,3).
e. Repeat (a - d). Finish facing partner in crossed-arm position (R) over L).
f. Repeat (a)
g. Repeat (b) sideward right and sideward left.
h. Step R across L In front (ct. 1), step L across R in front (ct. 2), step L in
place (ct. 3).
i. Take three steps in place (cts. 1,2,3).
