2. DEFINITION
20XX PRESENTATION TITLE 2
As patient who are older than 65 years and many of these people live active and healthy lives. In
addition there is an increasing number of people who are living more than 85 years old, who are often
considered as the “older elderly” population.
3. CLASSIFICATION
20XX PRESENTATION TITLE 3
Elderly patient has been classified under chronologically
Young old ( ages 65-75 years )
The old (ages75-85 years )
The older (ages greater than 85 )
4. HOW IT DIFFER FROM ADULTS ?
20XX PRESENTATION TITLE 4
Several vital physiologic function related to age as measured by marker show that renal plasma flow,
glomerular filtration, cardiac output and breathing capacity can drop from 10% to 30% in elderly
subjects compared to those at the 30 ages.
5. PHARMACOKINETICS
20XX PRESENTATION TITLE 5
Absorption – drug absorption may include a decline in the splanchnic blood flow , altered
gastrointestinal motility, increase in gastric PH and alteration in the gastrointestinal
absorptive surface.
Distribution – drug protein binding in the plasma may decrease as a result of decrease in
the albumin concentration mass and an increase in body fat.
Metabolism – first pass metabolism is also affected by about 1% / year after the age of 40.
the enzymes responsible for drug biotransformation may decrease with age, leading to a
decline In hepatic clearance.
Elimination – renal drug excretion generally declines with age as a result of decrease in
the glomerular filtration rate.
6. PATHOPHYSIOLOGIC CONDITIONS
20XX PRESENTATION TITLE 6
Require multiple drug therapy that increase the likelihood for a drug interaction.
Increased ADR and toxicity may result may result from poor patient compliance.
