Choose one director of American historical films and write an
essay that analyses their contribution. What kind of worldview
is evident in their films, and how effective are they in rendering
the time period or periods they have treated? Oliver Stone
(JFK, The Doors, Platoon/Born on the 4th/Heaven and Earth,
Nixon), Terrence Malick (The New World, Badlands, Thin Red
Line), Stanley Kubrick (Dr Strangelove, Full Metal Jacket),
Steven Spielberg (Amistad, Saving Private Ryan, The Color
Purple, Lincoln), Clint Eastwood (Letters From Iwo Jima/
Flags, J. Edgar, Unforgiven, Changeling) Michael Mann (Public
Enemies, Last of the Mohicans, The Insider) Kevin Costner
(Dances with Wolves, Open Range, Thirteen Days) Ron Howard
(Frost/Nixon, Apollo 13, Alamo) Martin Scorcese (The Aviator,
Gangs of New York), and Spike Lee (Malcolm X, Miracle at St.
Anna, Summer of Sam) are all good candidates for this topic.
Review one film or compare two films released at roughly the
same era that are
about
the same era or event in American history, or offer an
interpretation of that history. Explain the effectiveness or
contribution to our historical understanding that this film or
films make. The films do not necessarily have to be in the genre
of historical films. A quality drama that is based on events, but
uses composite characters and a fictional story can work as
well.
This written assignment will be formatted using
Chicago style
- footnotes and a bibliography. Have a title page and ensure
your argument is spelled out in the introduction. See
