The document discusses the advantages and disadvantages of using computers and multimedia for education. It explains that multimedia combines various media like text, graphics, audio and video to create engaging presentations. When used interactively, multimedia can provide individualized learning experiences. However, multimedia also requires powerful computers and has high development costs. The document also outlines some advantages of computers like increased efficiency and capabilities, as well as disadvantages like maintenance issues and potential for addiction or eye strain.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Using Multimedia Presentations
1. The Advantages and
Disadvantages of
Using Computers
and Multimedia
Presenter: Jene Rose B. Siges
Researcher: Honey Grace B. Sedra
PPT Maker: Klaire V. Saycon
Presented to: Ms. Mizpahgen P.
Moralla
2. Multimedia as an Educational
Tool
For many of us, the lure of computers
is a powerful one. However, many of us
also refrain from using computers for
fear of failure. We want to hone
computer skills but are scared to make
the effort because we lack those very
skills. Too many of us especially in the
field of learning, are caught in this
modern tug-of-war.
3. In 1980s & 1990s, concept of
multimedia took on a new meaning.
Capabilities of satellites, computers,
audio and video converged to create
new media. Combined w/ the
advances in hardware and software,
these provide enhanced learning
facility and attention to the specific
needs of individual users.
4. •A primary application of the
interactive multimedia for
instruction is in an instructional
situation where the learner is
given a material for him/ her to
review at her/his own pace,
interest, needs and cognitive
processes.
5. •Interactive multimedia materials’
goal is not to replace teachers
rather multimedia must be
extremely well designed and
sophisticated to mimic the best
teacher, by combining the various
elements of the cognitive
processes and the best quality of
technology.
6.
7. “ a judicious mix of various mass media such
as print, audio and video”
the development of computer based hardware
and software packages produced on a mass
scale and yet allow individualized use and
learning
“is the exciting combination of computer
hardware and software that allows you to
integrate video, animation, audio, graphics, and
test resources to develop effective
presentations on an affordable desktop
computer” (Fenrich, 1997)
“Is characterized by the presence of text,
picture, sound, animation and video; some or
all of which are organized into some coherent
program” (Phillips, 1997)
8. The need for making Multimedia
Courseware
Multimedia enables us to provide a way by
which learners can experience their subject
in a vicarious manner with the use of
graphic, video, and audio rather than in a
sequential manner.
Can provide an enhanced or augmented
learning experience at a low cost per unit.
Enables learning through exploration,
discovery, and experience
9. enables learning to be fun and friendly,
without fear of inadequacies or failure
Uses the natural information-processing
abilities that we already possess as
humans “a picture is worth a thousand
words”
• Multimedia courseware is over the text
based variety because application looks
better.
10. Practical Disadvantages of
Multimedia
Multimedia requires high-end computers
Sound, images, animation, and video,
constitute large amounts of data, which slow
down, or may not eve fit in a low end
computer
In writing multimedia courseware may not
be accessible to a large section of its
intended users if they do not have access to
multimedia-capable machines
11. •Have high development costs and the
process of developing effective multimedia
takes time
•Requires money for multimedia package
•User must have minimum level of computer
literacy in order to exploit the capabilities of
this medium for learning
•Training of the educator with unfamiliar skills
in terms of production and design of
multimedia courseware or packages can be
equally complicating
12.
13. Advantages and
Disadvantages of
Computers
We are now in the modern age, where people use
modern tools and equipment to make our lives
more comfortable. Most people now use computers
to improve the quality of their lives and to make
their tasks and works easier. Most of jobs today
require the use of computers.
15. •Can require a lot of maintenance
•Has a possibility of data lost, file corruption and
damage to hardware
•Can cause eye blindness
•Addiction
16. Computers play important roles in our
lives. Computers are powerful tools for
you and the organization, because
computers enable to more easier and
effectively and can help you do many
things. Use computer properly and in
the positive way.
