AP Human Geography Text Prepares Students for Success

Editor's Notes

  1. The first edition of Human Geography, preparing for the Advanced Placement Examination provides a concise narrative, skills instruction and practice, multiple-choice questions, free-response questions, and essential questions designed to help students get ready to take the College Board’s Human Geo AP Examination. It can be utilized in several ways: a core textbook for a course, a supplement to a college-level textbook and a review book in the final weeks before the exam.
  2. David Palmer is a 2012 National Council Geography Education Teacher Award winner, has 20 years experience in teaching and has been a table leader, reader and test item creator for the AP Human Geo exam
  3. Christopher has been teacher AP Human GEO since it began in 2000. He has been a contributing writer for college board, and has been an AP exam reader since 2001. Chris was awarded the National council for Geography Education’s distinguished teacher award in 2007 and the Utah Geographic Alliance awarded his Outstanding Secondary Teacher in 2001.
  4. Divided into seven units, mirroring the structure of the current AP Human Geography College Board Curriculum Framework.
  5. The book is divided into 20 chapters as well as 7 units. Chapter content accounts for about 15 pages per chapter, not including the review, so the narrative is brief and focused on the key learning objectives and essential understandings that students need to know to successfully pass the AP exam.
  6. Unit Reviews include 1 feature and a “Reflect on the Essential Question” task. You will notice a complete practice examination, modeled after the AP Human Geography exam, on page 358 of this book. A comprehensive index provides strong text support and helps students locate terms and concepts quickly.
  7. This introduction surveys the type of information covered in an AP Human Geography course and tested on the exam.
  8. The exam consists of 2 parts – Section 1 includes 75 multiple choice questions to be answered in 60 minutes and accounts for 50% of the total exam score. Section II includes 3 Free Response Questions to be answered in 75 minutes, and also accounts for 50% of the total exam score. In terms of scoring, students are scored on a scale of 1 to 5, where 5 is considered “extremely well qualified”. A score of 3 or higher is usually considered evidence that a student has demonstrated proficiency.
  9. In this book, our authors contend that the biggest difference between human geographers and other social scientists is geographers focus on spatial perspective. Human geographers focus on spatial perspective and the human impact. Thus, the 4 skills needed to analyze geographic information and think spatially are outlined here. These skills are of vital importance to geographers. Thus, the features in this book provide many opportunities for students to engage in real-world analysis, practicing and becoming adept in these 4 skills.
  10. The review schedule helps both teachers and students keep track of course progress and adjust as necessary. The Schedule details the week, associated content and chapters for students to read from the book, and a pacing guideline
  11. Each of the 7 units in the book begin with a list of the chapters in the unit, an overview of the content, and a list of the enduring understandings that are covered in the unit. The 20 chapters are organized according to major themes of human geography, as identified by the “College Board”.
  12. Each (of the 20 chapters) presents students with the basic vocabulary, concepts and geographic models of the theme. Real World Examples have been utilized to illustrate key topics.
  13. Essential questions help frame the content of the chapter, set a purpose for student reading and help students engage with the text.
  14. Key Terms: At the end of each chapter is a summative list of the vocabulary terms identified in the chapter narrative. Familiarity with these terms will be an important part of your success on the AP exam. A sample free response question is included in every chapter. These are written to mirror the questions on the AP exam.
  15. Each chapter has 8 multiple choice questions – with or without a stimulus.
  16. Each chapter review has 1 free response question
  17. Think as a Geographer: This feature, at the end of each chapter and within the chapter review, builds on the skills used by geographers, such as interpreting maps, understanding networks, recognizing scales of analysis, and defining regions. Each of these features has a unique connection to the chapter’s enduring understandings, and requires chapter content knowledge and application of concepts and tools learned within the chapter.
  18. The features of this book provide MULTIPLE opportunities for students to engage in project work to help make the Human Geo concepts and enduring understandings more concrete.
  19. Geographic Perspectives: This Feature focuses on how geographers approach a topic by highlighting the spatial perspective that is distinctive to the field. Students also learn to interpret the past and understand the present. Students will gain skills to use and interpret maps, interpreting data sets, building geographic models, and assessing aerial photographs, and satellite images.
  20. This feature enhances critical thinking skills and helps students develop spatial perspective by applying geographical concepts, skills, and tools.
  21. Write as a Geographer: This feature at the end of each unit focuses on one of the numerous writing skills needed to answer a free-response question on the AP exam.
  22. Each chapter opens with a broad Essential Question that is then addressed by the content in that chapter. The essential questions are repeated at the end of each unit to provide students an opportunity to answer them.
  23. Students have the opportunity to take a complete practice exam, complete with 75 multiple choice questions and 3 Free-Response questions. Students may use the sample questions to focus their studies on the areas that are most needed for improvement. Teachers may use the practice exam as a formative assessment to identify deficiencies in student understandings and plan for re-teaching.
  24. The answer key for both multiple choice and free-response questions provides examples of good responses and point allocations, and correlates each question to the College Board Curriculum Framework’s Enduring Understandings, Learning Objectives, and Essential Knowledge. The AP Answer Key also details where the topic is covered in the text.
