Layout:
• This advert conforms to the
conventional layout of album adverts.
It consists of the artist’s name at the
top, and the album title near the
bottom.
• This advert also gives information such
as the release date, including singles
and platforms the album is going to be
released on.
• It also contains an official website
right at the bottom of the page along
with a record label logo in the right
hand corner.
3. Florence + The Machine
Content:
• The content of this advert conforms to the
conventional album advert through imagery, text and
logos.
For example:
• Typically, album adverts would have the artist/band
on as the main focus. Florence + The Machine
matches this typical convention as she is presented
in the middle of the page, making her the main
focus.
• The text conforms album adverts as it informs the
customers what is included within the album and
release dates this summarises the information the
audience might want to know and it promotes the
album successfully.
• The advert also includes a logo for the record
label “moshi moshi records”.

Style/Design/Use of colour:
• The design is quite dark in the
background but there’s the use of
lighting reflecting off her making
her stand out from the flower
background.
• The use of the dark black and white
theme stands out against the
prettiness of the props and the
artist. This conveys the idea that
the artist’s genre is indie pop,
this is strongly suggests through
the use of colour and flowers in
the background.
• The style of the advert is
conveying the idea of innocence by
the use of props, mise-en-scene and
imagery.

Audience Appeal:
• The audience may find this advert
appealing due to the artist looking
attractive. The lighting is shining
straight onto her which gives her a
radiant glow. This also means that
any fan would notice this and could
be interested.
• Another appeal could be the fact
it’s very eye catching. This is due
to the fact imagery is showing
lungs which ties in with the album
title.
6. Florence + The Machine
Imagery:
• Indie pop is usually shot in a low budget
due to the convention of seeing a lot of
woods and nature. This magazine advert is
conventional in this sense as you can
clearly see flowers and greenery behind the
artist.
• Her costume is very unique and it blends
into the green of the background, whilst
still portraying an innocent image of the
artist.
• This innocence is shown strongly due to her
having dark lungs on the outside of her
body, this could have a stronger meaning
linking to her health and that she’s in a
relaxing place with flowers and the
greenery surrounding her.

Typography:
• Like the other indie pop magazine advert I
analysed, this one also uses two different
fonts to separate from the artist’s name to
the other information of the album
name/details.
• The typography of the artist’s name is
typically quite a girly font and it’s also a
recognisable font for Florence + the
machine to her audience as she uses a very
similar one in other adverts and digipaks.
• The text is in white to stand out from the
use of the black backgrounds, this gives it a
strong contrast and makes it easy to read
over the colours.
8. Florence + The Machine
Representation:
• Florence + The Machine is presented
through innocence, feminine and natural.
This is suggested through the natural
location of woods/flower background, back
up with the innocence of her posture.
• The same posture is shown through
another advert of hers, “Cosmic Love”
where you notice her lying with her arms
and body in a similar position. Like “Lungs”,
this one also shows a strong use of
innocence.

Genre Conventions:
• Conventionally in indie pop you tend to see
woods as the lead location or very urban
areas. Therefore this advert sticks to the
this convention making in recognisable.
• Floral or nature props are usually used
especially in the genre where a female is
the lead. It conveys the idea of innocence
and feminine of these aspects.
• The fact that’s her lungs are on her body,
on top of the place where they should be,
strongly suggest the alternative side of the
indie pop. It also suggests that the imagery
links with the narrative of the album as a
whole.
10. Florence + The Machine
Institutional Links:
• The advert presents the “moshi
moshi records” in the bottom right
hand corner with the logo.
• BY including logos on the advert
they’re giving credit to the record
company which helped and giving
them the recognition they deserve.

Synergy:
• Whilst looking at her other
promotional materials, I’ve noticed
that she’s presented in the same way
each time. In most of the shots I
saw, she doesn’t make eye contact with
the camera, making her more innocent
and “girly” rather than giving strong
eye contact to the camera conveying a
more powerful and confident.
• The overall themes of her other
promotional material are also shot in
a low key light, this makes it
atmospheric and most of the time
would link to interpretations of
album titles. E.g. “Lungs” suggests
the album could have a more personal
meaning behind and be strongly linked
to feelings. Another album of hers,
“Ceremonial” and “Cosmic Love” also
suggests the same type of
deep/strong/passionate meaning.
