2. Front Cover
The topline contains the words
“The Ultimate Music Guide”, as
well as instantly confirming
that this is indeed a music
magazine, the word “ultimate”
is a tag which is used to draw to
a reader in because it shows
that the magazine has high
compliments.
The main image is a close
up of “Johnny Rotten”
(John Lydon) who was the
lead singer for the band
“Sex Pistols”. As one can
see, this image relates to
the masthead which states
the band’s name. Uncut
magazines always have a
band’s name as their
masthead and then use a
picture of the band as
their front cover’s main
image. This makes readers
become familiar with what
magazine they are reading
The pull quote “they’ll never
shut us up!” is enlarged to
draw attention to it, reflecting
how John Lydon would have
wanted to draw attention to
himself when he shouted it
out
“Incendiary” is
another example
of a tag as well as
“unexpurgated”
Barcode and price
“Anarchy in the UK!” is
The name of a Sex Pistols
Song and is used her as a
Plug to boost magazine
Status. This plug also reflects how
The figure in the main mage looks:
Mad
These are examples of cover
lines which give hints to the
essential articles within the
magazine
3. Contents Page
This Is an image of
the band “Public
Image Limited” or
“Pil” which are
mentioned on the
front cover of the
magazine
The articles which have pull
quotes as their titles, such
as “If they ask for violence,
we’ll give them violence !”
have a similar typography
to one another, that being
that they are in a bolder
font than the other articles
and are in a green colour. I
think this bolder format for
the quotes is clever,
because it reflects the
boldness and arrogance in
character of John Lydon.
Although it is hard to see on
this image, all the article
have a little box which
describes what type of
article it is “Classic Feature”
or “Album Review”
Under each Article
title there is text
that sums up what
the article is about
The yellow, pink, green and
black clashing colour scheme
used on this cover page is again
genius, because it reflects the
uneasiness and discomfort that
people felt when hearing
Johnny Rotten’s political and
outrageous lyricsPage numbers are situated next to
each article title
4. Double Page
Spread
The Title of this double page spread is a continuation
of the green and bold typography. Also, there is a
continuation of the bright pink, green, black or yellow
colour scheme which further emphasizes John
Lydon’s rage and discomfort and makes the reader
feel these emtoions
The main image of
the double page
spread reflects the
title because it
shows John Lydon
howling into a
microphone and
one can imagine
him swearing and
cursing in the way
that he was
renound for
In the text on the left
words like
“provocative…deran
ged…fallen
apart…hate” are all
used, and I believe
that without even
having read this
piece of text, these
words some to mind
just by looking at the
pull quote and the
main image of John
Lydon
John Lydon’s acne ridden face, dirty shirt, greasy hair
and bad teeth are all shown in this great shot of the
singer, and so, this image has almost been used to it’s
full extent of usefulness due to it showing his anger,
“deranged” and insane mind and mad lifestyle.
