The document analyzes and summarizes the design elements of a Coldplay album cover. It notes that the front cover features a graphic edgy font splattered over a famous painting, creating a chaotic yet rebellious image. The painting depicted is "Liberty Leading the People" and symbolizes liberty. The inside features four candid, individual photos of the band members in different poses, aiming to portray their focus on music over image. The back cover keeps a simple theme and format to draw focus to the song titles rather than distracting imagery.
1. Font
Graphic edgy font used in a
splattered way which creates a
messy chaotic image. This font
could also be shown as being
used in order to create
juxtaposition. This is due to the
fact that the image is a well known
prestigious painting and cutting
this image with modern pop culture
band and font draws in the viewer
as it creates an almost mysterious
and definitely rebellious feel.
2. Image
The image used is liberty leading
the people. This is a french painting
by Eugene. It is painted to
commemorate the revolution where
King Charles was over powered.
The use of a woman at the top
holding the flag of the French
Revolution (the tricolour flag) is
done in order to personify the
concept of her being the goddess
and hero of liberty as she leads the
people over bodies of dead people.
She is known as Marianne and is
show here to be a key symbol of
liberty itself
3. Images
The front cover only shows the album name
and the famous painting. This is important as
it doesn't give us a clue as to who the artist
is, instead we are either expected to know
that it is cold play purely from the album
name or instead know the group well enough
to recognise them through these images
shown on the inside front cover.
The style on this side is very simplistic. This
is because it is divided simply into four parts
each taking up equal space. As well as this
there is a rather plain effect that is cast over
all four images to make them seem almost
sepia or black and white in quality.
4. Representation of the artists
The shots are all seemingly candid creating
an unrehearsed more raw and natural vibe
to the group. This is also due to the fact
that the angles are casual and varied in all
of the different images showing them as
individuals rather than a staged group. This
is evident in ensuring that they are giving
off their usual ‘Coldplay’ image rather than
presenting themselves as a typical boy
band group, this is done by using four
separate images with four different poses
and different styles rather than sticking to
conventions of pop groups which would be
one very staged image together. The
images also create the idea that maybe
they try to connect more with their music
rather than their overall image. This would
be an idea which typically would be
received better by an older more mature
audience as they would respond better to
the idea of focusing on music than
presenting a set image.
5. Back covers
We can see from these back images that they have used a
simple theme. It requires the viewer of the digipak to focus
on the song titles themselves rather than being distracted
by other imagery that so many other album back covers
would provide.
There is a juxtaposition theme used throughout the digipak as we
can see the contrast between the bold front cover and the
simplistic back cover. This cover provides the idea that its sole
purpose isn’t to grab attention or focus for the artists but instead
provides the main information of the group name (this is key as
they don’t include it on the front so it is needed somewhere).
