2. WHAT IS REGIONAL
IDENTITY ?
 Regions of England have very different representations. Normally, the
North is thought to be quite violent and rough, where the South is to be
considered very middle-class and aristocratic. Neither of these representations
are exactly true, as there are the middle-class parts of the North, and more
unestablished areas in the South. These regional stereotypes in TV drama are
called regional identity and they are how can audience can interpret a character
or setting by Mis en Scene aspects and be given the connotation of that certain
region.

Example : Heartbeat
Heartbeat was one of the longest running shows on TV until recently. It showed the
north in a professional way, however till kept to a lot of the scenery and representations
that were seen in other TV dramas so as to make it another representation of Yorkshire.
The North of England is generally seen as:
 quite rural
 having nostalgic ideas, quite old-fashioned
 historic depiction
 friendly, not too hard-hitting
 mostly shown to contain the elderly
 These representations usually come from London media companies, so play on the
stereotypes and accepted idea about Yorkshire as farmland and small villages etc.
