1. Evaluation 1
In what ways does your media product use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions of real media
products?
2. 1. A shot that shows a link between lyrics and/or music and
visuals
⢠In our music video, we used the
performance element of someone singing
to show a link between the lyrics and the
video.
⢠The words being mimed out match with the
lyrics in the song and this shows that the
video fits well with the song.
⢠Other videos have similar links to our video,
like for example in the music video âWavesâ
by Mr Probz, we see a girl disappear behind
a tree on the lyrics âYou are not around.â
This is also similar with our idea in the
theme of looking for a girl but she is not
around.
3. 2. A shot that typifies the way a record company would
want their artist to be represented
⢠We want our artist to be represented in an indie
way therefore we donât want the singer to be
the main focus of the video and having all the
attention focused around them, therefore
challenge the typical conventions of a music
video .
⢠Weâve chosen casual clothing which glamorous
pop stars would not usually appear in.
⢠We used a large group of people to show the
artist and the song being represented as a
chilled, friendly atmosphere.
⢠In this video by Empire of the Sun âWe are the
Peopleâ, he is presented in a very quirky strange
headdress, but this makes him unique and stand
out from other artists, so the record company
did this to make him be more interesting to
watch in a video.
4. 3. A shot that illustrates how your video uses music
genre
⢠We use a lot of nature in our video, to
represent this indie genre.
⢠We are highlighting the good things in life
that come free, and making the video
enjoyable to watch while appreciating the
better things in life.
⢠Nature is also a big theme for the music
video âOlympic Airwaysâ by Foals, who
started out as an indie group until too many
people heard about them and now they are
very popular.
⢠We can see, like our video, the beautiful
lighting through trees.
5. 4. A shot that shows an intertextual reference
⢠A big focus with our three different media
texts and the artist is nature and water.
This shot here links to our magazine advert
which is also a river, and also the girl in the
water for our digipak, with similar effects
of how the light shines through the water.
⢠Other videos use intertextual references
with different media texts, especially in
music videos.
⢠For example Taylor Swiftâs song âLove
Storyâ is a intertextual reference to Romeo
and Juliet, with reference to the names in
the song, and using costume and mise-en-
scene to create the look of the play/film.
6. 5. A shot that demonstrates your use of camera
⢠We used different angles and shot types, as well
as movement such as tilting and panning to vary
what the audience will see.
⢠We use this shot of the feet for example by
making the tripod the smallest it can be, and just
showing the boys feet.
⢠This signifies the amount of walking the boy is
doing in the video.
⢠We angled the camera in order to also get this
beautiful lighting from the sun which cameras
pick up.
⢠The use of camera work in the Arctic Monkeys
music video âBrianstormâ uses lots of movement
as a different example, to create more speed to
the action seen in the video, particularly focusing
on the instruments, band members and the
dancers.
7. 6. A shot that demonstrates your use of lighting
⢠Lighting is a big focus in our video in both the
day and night shots, so we had to make sure
we got it right.
⢠The day shots worked with using the suns
natural light to give a majestic feel to the
video.
⢠The night shots used sparklers to light up
peoples faces in the dark and to add an
interesting effect in the video, so it is clear to
see what is happening and it intrigues the
audience to watch the sparklers as well.
⢠Other videos also use effects like this to light
up the surroundings, like Sigma âNobody To
Loveâ where we see a girl running with a flare.
⢠We really wanted to use flares in our video but
thought in the conditions we were in, this
might be a bit dangerous.
8. 7. A shot that demonstrates your use of mise-en-scene
⢠Our mise-en-scene is mainly nature.
⢠Here we see where the party scene was
with the tree stumps and woods, so we
see this is unconventional compared to a
normal house party or club.
⢠We also see the black leather jacket appear
in a lot of the shots with the boy, as well as
the girl wearing it, which brings huge
significance into the video.
⢠This is a big contrast to videos like
LMFAOâs âChampagne Showersâ, where we
see a big group of people in a club dancing,
with lots of lights, bright colours and
drinking in the mise-en-scene.
9. 8. Two shots which you feel demonstrate something which
shows you have watched other music videos
⢠The idea of a boy and girl getting along
well in a video is used a lot. In the video
Klingande- Jubel, we see this
relationship grow through the video
and the camera focuses on these two
the most.
⢠We took this idea where we have a boy
who likes a girl, however we twisted
this idea of them ending happy, as they
start happy but something happens to
the girl which intrigues the audience at
the end when suddenly she disappears.
10. 9. Two shots which you feel demonstrate something which
shows you have watched other music videos
⢠In the Foals âOlympic Airwaysâ, this also
involves a party of people outside. This
video uses the suns natural light to
create a chilled atmosphere and they
use balloons at the end which bring the
group together and show their
individuality.
⢠We were influenced by this and used
the idea of a party outside too, but
used sparklers as our individuality of
the video.
