1. Evaluation Q1
In what ways does your media product use or, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real media products?
By Michael Dreelan
2. Convention 1 (Video)
• Pop rock videos often have a performance in them based in some kind of studio
with well lit ambient lighting and close up shots of their instrument.
Here you can see the
close up of the
microphone
(instrument). This is to
show the artists passion
for the song and music
and also to highlight how
natural it is.
In these images you
can see the well lit
background lighting.
We used these
conventions to make
our performance look
very realistic and
natural.
This fall out boy song’s video also uses the conventions but also develops
them as well with different colours of lighting. They also use a smashed bulb
to create a very bright light. In this video they also have various close up shots
of their instruments.
These are two different songs from Mumford and sons. One of them
challenges the conventions and the other reinforces them. This may be to
match the tone/tempo of the song. Our one republic song was very up beat
so it was better for us to use the convention of well lit ambient lighting.
3. Convention 2 (Video)
• In many pop rock videos, the costumes are in between pop videos and rock
videos meaning they aren’t too fashionable but also aren’t too dark and dull.
In these 4 screenshots from our music video, you
can see the wide range in costumes. This was the
idea of our video as the outfit had to match its
corresponding location. However our performance
costume reinforces the convention as it is black
and white which can be seen as rather boring, so
we added the hat and the braces to give it a little
more character and relate it more to pop as well. This twenty one pilots song has very similar costumes for the
performance as it is black and white however they have added a white
bow tie to make it a bit more quirky.
In this music video by maroon 5 you can
see how he is wearing quite fashionable
clothes and a unique hairstyle like in pop
videos but he has got a black leather
jacket on which relates more to rock
music. Here you can see the costume
between the two genres.
4. Convention 3 (Video)
• In pop rock videos, the person who does the performance will also be
acting in the narrative. This is different to other music videos as
stereotypically, they aren’t the same person.
In our music video we used
the same person for the
narrative and the
performance.
This is the same for many
bands in the pop/rock
genre and there are a lot of
examples that can be used.
One on them is this fall out
boy song ‘this ain’t a scene’.
This is different to this Ed
Sheeran song where he is
performing but there are
different characters for the
narrative.
The reason for this Is that it makes them
the main star and makes the song seem
more natural. Which is wanted in most
pop rock bands.
5. Convention 4 (Magazine Advert)
• Digipaks and magazine adverts in the pop rock genre will often have a
black border around the edge which relates more to the rock side of
things but there will then be more colour in the centre of the page for
the pop genre.
Here Is our magazine advert
with the black border along the
bottom, this is very similar to
the muse magazine advert. This
gives it that rock undertone.
You can also see in these examples how there is
often a lot more colour or lighter shades in the
centre of the image.
This magazine advert from Mumford
and Sons has a complete black border
to it with various photos in the middle
all with warm light colours making this
the best example to match the
conventions.
We wanted to use these conventions to
fit in with the genre. We also thought it
would suit our artists USP of the hat
and braces as it gives it an old but
stylish feel.
6. Convention 5 (Digipak)
• In pop rock digipaks there a lot of medium shots showing the artist or
someone else in the middle of the page.
In our digipak we wanted to use
this convention but develop it a bit
so that it was unique and not so
boring. For this image we decided
to duplicate and flip the image.
All of these examples from
different bands are very similar.
Other than the fall out boy one,
they all have the artist on the
digipak, usually in the middle of the
image using a medium or long shot.
We also changed it up by using
some close up shots.
