2. A Brief History Of
The Internet
The Internet started in the 1960s as a way for
government researchers to share information. Computers
in the '60s were large and immobile and in order to make
use of information stored in any one computer, one had to
either travel to the site of the computer or have magnetic
computer tapes sent through the conventional postal
system.
Another catalyst in the formation of the Internet was the
heating up of the Cold War. The Soviet Union's launch of
the Sputnik satellite spurred the U.S. Defense
Department to consider ways information could still be
disseminated even after a nuclear attack. This eventually
led to the formation of the ARPANET (Advanced
Research Projects Agency Network), the network that
ultimately evolved into what we now know as the Internet.
ARPANET was a great success but membership was
limited to certain academic and research organizations
who had contracts with the Defense Department. In
response to this, other networks were created to provide
information sharing.
3. How People Use Search Engines
A user is specifically looking to
find information relating to the
keywords they have used.
A user is looking for more general
information about a topic.
4. Digital Devices
Used By People
Smartphones have pulled away from
laptops to become the most important
device used to access the internet for
close to half of those accessing the
internet in the United Kingdom (UK) in
2020. In 2020, significantly more people
identified smartphones as their most
important device for accessing the
internet, compared with those that
nominated each of the large display
formats combined.
5. What Consumers
Buy Online And
Trends
In 2021, an estimated 2.14 billion
people worldwide are expected to
purchase goods online (Statista,
2017). At the same time, global
ecommerce sales is forecast at
$4.891 trillion. If these online
shopping statistics aren’t enough
to blow you away, projections show
that ecommerce sales worldwide
are going to grow to $6.4 trillion by
2024.

active internet users worldwide - 59.5

12. The Future Of
Digital
Experts predict the Internet will
become ‘like electricity’ — less
visible, yet more deeply
embedded in people’s lives for
good and ill.
• A global, immersive, invisible,
ambient networked computing
environment built through the
continued proliferation of smart
sensors, cameras, software,
databases, and massive data
centers in a world-spanning
information fabric known as the
Internet of Things.
• “Augmented reality”
enhancements to the real-world
input that people perceive through
the use of
portable/wearable/implantable
technologies.
• Disruption of business models
established in the 20th century
(most notably impacting finance,
entertainment, publishers of all
sorts, and education).
• Tagging, databasing, and
intelligent analytical mapping of
the physical and social realms.
13. The spread of the Internet
will enhance global
connectivity that fosters
more planetary
relationships and less
ignorance.

Internet let us be actual
