3. The Internet
In the 1950s, during the Cold War, the US developed a
communications system that could not be affected by a
nuclear attack. A number of scientists and engineers brought
their research together to create the ARPANET, paving the
way for the web as we know it today.

The Internet is at once a world-wide broadcasting capability, a
mechanism for information dissemination, and a medium for
collaboration and interaction between individuals and their
computers without regard for geographic location.

Internet today
According to Dentze (2013), the Internet has turned our
existence upside down. It has revolutionized
communications, to the extent that it is now our
preferred medium of everyday communication.
In almost everything we do, we use the Internet. Today
a click or two is enough to read your local paper and
any news source from anywhere in the world, updated
up to the minute.

Digital technology
in our era
30. Script/notes prepared for video pitch
Welcome, Join me to discover how this era has been taken over by digital technology.
Let's start from the beginning: Do you know how the Internet was created? It was created during the
Cold War, yes, a war. The U.S needed to create a communications system that would not be threatened
by a nuclear attack. Sounds familiar, doesn't it?
How many times per day do you use the Internet? From looking for the forecast, the latest news. maps
or buying online. How many times do you use it on your phone, your laptop or any other device?
The internet is now of our life, and it is here to stay. Overcoming the worst years of the pandemic, the
Internet made us feel somewhat closer to our loved ones, allowed us to connect in unique ways, and
entertained us, aside from the usual capability. - Internet definition- .
We will now navigate through this Digital Era and understand how marketing is constantly shifting and
adapting to it. Together we will understand how people access the internet, the usage of the different
devices, how customers now search for information, their shopping behaviour, and the new trends,
especially video consumption.
31. Script/notes prepared for video pitch
In the midst of the pandemic - January 2021- more than half of the global population were active internet
users worldwide, and most of them accessed it via mobile devices.
In 2005 not even 1% of the global population had access to the Internet, ut only 10 years later, by 2015, 46.4%
had access to it. It is interesting how fast this figure changed when the pandemic hit, and people needed to
connect, to interact, and yes, to buy.
That is why countries need to focus and keep investing in new technologies, including 5G, that provide
Internet speed and better connectivity.
Now, let's have a look at what are the most used devices to access the Internet.
This is a list of the countries with the fastest mobile internet, year by year, from 2019 to 2021.
As you can see, Australia has gradually declined in this ranking, challenging the government to invest more in
internet speed.
Most people, 92.8% to be accurate, access the internet via mobile devices and a significant number also uses
laptops and desktops.
32. Script/notes prepared for video pitch
But it is important to understand how smartphones have shifted Internet consumption.
How do customers search for information?
Did you know that 53.62% of all website traffic worldwide was generated through mobile phones in
2020?
Almost 91% accessed the internet via any kind of mobile phone, with a majority accessing via smartphones.
Do you recognise any of these symbols or logos?
Each of them represents the top four web browsers used across all devices.
The most popular web browser is Chome, owned by Google, with more than 64% using its service, followed
by Safari, developed by Apple.
We can safely say mobile internet is not only widely available but also extremely affordable.
The Internet has gone to places no one even thought possible, including online shopping.
People are now buying not only products but services as well.
33. Script/notes prepared for video pitch
More than half of the Internet users have engaged in e-commerce activities.
But the most interesting shift around online commerce is that people are now looking and buying
second-hand items and are accessing a very simple type of credit -buy now, pay later-. Behaviours that
are growing.
According to Shopify, a worldwide recognised e-commerce platform, the term "books" is looked at more
than 2.24 million times. This includes print and online books, which are the most wanted item online,
followed by music and belt buckles. Yes, BELT BUCKLES.
Let's move on to one of the most trending tools online: videos.
Cause video marketing is the future, and the future is here.
According to Cisco, by 2023 more than 80% of the global internet traffic will be video related.
Looking at some figures today, more than half of the internet users view online videos every day, and almost
80% every week.
Only a couple of years ago, in 2019, before the pandemic, people were spending almost 7 hours a week (this
is almost one working day) watching videos online.
34. Script/notes prepared for video pitch
The use of the Internet won't reduce or stop. Moreover, it is expected that every year the number of
digital users will increase by at least 4%.
And there are more fascinating numbers around the internet growth:
So let's recapitulate:
More than half of the global population worldwide uses the internet.
Countries need a strong 5G focus and investment to keep the population connected worldwide.
92.8% of users access the internet via mobile devices.
More than half of the internet users have bought a product or service online.
Video Marketing is a trend that will remain for the forthcoming years.
By 2023, 50 billion smart devices will be sharing data.
Every second, 127 new devices are connected to the internet, meaning that while I was sharing this data with
you we have 254 new devices connected.
To finish, perhaps it is now time to reflect on YOUR internet consumption. Are you willing to stop or reduce
your online time?
