Q:How effective is the combination
of your main product and ancillary
texts?
Ancillaries and their purpose:
 Our ancillaries serve as a promotional package
  that helps us to attract and reach out to our
  target audience.
 Although ancillaries can include some visual or
  textual elements that would attract masses
  outside of the target audience
 Therefore the motive is to be able to increase
  awareness about the existence of our product
  and bring us the potential audience.
The two ancillaries that I have chosen include:


 A film poster           A Magazine Review
Film poster:
My film poster contains several informative and
attractive features:
  Pictures of main characters to get viewer familiarized with the
   characters.
  Stills from the movie: The picture showing the characters
   running signifies action. Cash in the briefcase suggests that
   there are going to be some crime elements in the movie.
  Title written with large customized font: The font represents a
   suburban setting of the film as it has shape of buildings at the
   bottom of its letters.
  The credits at the bottom give the name of
   owners, director, actor, crew, etc: Audience is generally
   interested to watch a film if it has a famous company or
   person involved. In my case it could be Paramount Pictures
   since it is a well known media house and audience believes
   that if the movie has been financed or distributed by
   Paramount Pictures, it is bound to be good.
Magazine Review:
The magazine review reflects upon my movie
from a perspective of the audience.
   A well-designed layout establishes credibility and a good image on the reader.
    The more the layout is attractive and comfortable for the reader, the more the
    credibility of the article is.
   Large title with stylized bright gradient color catches attention of the reader
    easily.
   The stills of the movie provide an instant glance on theme of the film and which
    genre does it belong to.
   A positive review definitely sends out a positive message to the reader.
    Although I have added some humor and mockery on some aspects of the film
    which keeps the reader interested in the article while also proving myself to be
    unbiased.
   Positive quote from a known personality earns good image for the film and
    helps corroborate author’s opinion.
   Background info about the actors helps to upraise their value and stardom.
    Hence the readers become intrigued on how the actor may have acted in the
    film.
Conclusion:
 I personally experienced that ancillaries can indeed bring about
   success to the product when I circulated my movie poster before the
   screening in our school. I had shared the poster on social networking
   such as Facebook and many people got interested in watching my
   film at screening in particular.
 When combined, the two ancillaries can bring about high amount of
   anticipation and expectations from the audience. So it is necessary
   to deliver good quality movie as well. It has been seen that some
   movies which have strong promotional packages fail to meet
   audience’s expectation and lose those consumers who want to see
   and have yet not seen the film through word of mouth and social
   networking websites.
 Posters and Magazine reviews have been crucial in promoting the
   film as seen in the past. Franchises take advantage of these two
   especially since they already have fan base so every poster and
   review confirms loyalty to the film. Examples include Batman and
   Spiderman.
