2. What are symbolic Conventions?
• Symbolic conventions are about a indicated connotation.
• This is more beneath the surface of what is in front of us as an
audience.
• For example if you see a lit candle beside a bed, it connotes
passion or romance.
What are Technology Conventions?
• This convention is more about the practical side of making the
campaign.
• Editing for example is a technological convention
• A technological convention of our genre is slow cutting throughout
the editing.
3. Why would you use technological
and symbolic conventions in your
work? It is very important at times to use the
conventions of your genre. This is for
reasons such as building a fan base that
will aspire to listen to your work because
there is similarity in the other artists work
in your genre. This does apply to the
music but also the style you go for with
your whole campaign and also star image.
7. These two screenshots show too similarities between
the female actor and the artist. There is a running
theme of passion throughout both of the videos.
These two shots show moments of lust that support
the narrative. Possibly videos in this genre is all about
teasing the audience.
8. Although both of the locations in our two
videos are different, I mean completely
different, they do use the same techniques.
Miguel’s video gives us a establishing shot
and uses the same kind of lighting as we
do. He uses lighting that is very vibrant
using red and blue background also.
9. This is the beginning of Miguel’s
video where he decides to
announce his name at the beginning
of this. We did something very
similar, but we put it at the end and
it was the name of the music video.
This is a statement it just shows the
name of the artist or the name of
the music, it is a statement to just be
like ‘there’. So there is definitely a
similarity when it comes to star
theory. Miguel shows his name at
the start to present him self straight
away. We do our for a similar reason.
We want out video to be good so
when it comes to the end, when it
says Without U, it is more like
‘theres our work’.
10. I found a similarity of what both
the artists do throughout the
video with their performance
skills. It is very obvious that they
are in the same genre, the are
performing the song by using
their hands and attitude to
proved what they are talking
about. It gives the artist a bit of
attitude. I noticed this was a
theme that was recognised.
11. In both of the video’s there is
numerous shots of the female
actors which are very flattering
on their faces. This is to do with
the video trying to make the
females look very attractive.
Also the lighting on their faces
once again, as a design element
is very similar.
13. You can see these video’s are
similar because of their studio
shots. This includes how the
artists are lit. It is very obvious
that Kelela has also using an
approach by lighting herself in a
colour (metallic) in order to
keep the video simple but very
effective. The plain black
background with then only the
subject lit with certain lighting it
looks very similar to our
product.
I also have realised Kelela did
not make custom a ginormous
part of her video although she
does have a very trendy style.
This what we wanted to do with
our video have a trendy outfit
but use it subtly.
14. Although Kelela uses a red
background in this part of the
video she is still lit in the studio
with a vibrant colour on her
face. This is very similar to the
shots of our actress in the studio
in slow motion. This video ‘A
Message’ created for Kelela by
ID Magazine is very artistic
which matches her music. This is
definitely a convention of our
genre. The video’s created by
these two artists I have look at
makes it clear when it comes to
alternative R&B that videos
must have an artistic and
individual look.
15. I noticed that in the video the
director also used the idea of
getting close to Kelela’s face,
just like we did with our artists.
The transitions in her video are
very slow and smooth. Most of
t h e t i m e s h e i s f a d e d
completely into darkness to
keep the effect up. This also
connects a convention that
video’s also must be very slowly
cut as I have seen examples of
this numerous times throughout
the process of making our
video.
16. Did we meet the
conventions or
challenge them?

20. This is a classic example of Alternative R&B using a photoshoot or
artwork to be the first thing you see on their website. Both FKA
Twigs and Miguel use this option with their home page. We choose
to do this so that our artist is seen boldly and we wanted to choose
a picture that really explained his style. Which is what I think both
Miguel and FKA twigs work does. We took it on a Kodak film to
have a dated grainy effect to show we have a quirky artist.
21. Banks has a very similar colour scheme compared to
our website design. We wanted to obviously have a
connection between our video and our website.
When looking around I noticed Banks has the same
idea of using the colour red. Also her website
homepage is also a very long scroll down page which
is also the style we have went for. She incorporates
her other pages at the top by using the small dots we
have this in order to connect our other pages instead
of having it further down the drop down home page.

25. I think it is also an important aspect
for alternative R&B artists to put out
mixtape and just let their music be
put on sound cloud. This is what the
party next door has done and I
realised we had also done this. We
have supported the convention of
using sound cloud. Soundcloud is a
platform in which artists (that means
anyone) create music and post it to
the world. This represents thats
artist like party next door put music
on Soundcloud is that he cares
about creating music for his
followers and fan base to listen to,
that he is all about the creating and
giving music. This is the vibe we
want to put across with Fredo
Fahrenheit, that he is really into
making his own music and mix
tapes, putting them out there not
fully worrying about money.

used surrounding our artist. There is a Gaugin blur
effect around both of their surroundings. We using this
in order to focus fully on our artist and not the
background, having this as an accent on my album
work. This effect is used because it is a trendy look to
have on your album cover.
