• A convention is associations made by society, which
dictate the way certain conventions fit with genres
• It is also an arrangement of codes that usually
demonstrate the way that something is usually done
3. T E C H N I C A L A N D S Y M B O L I C
• Technical conventions have to do with the practical
side to media. i.e. camera work and editing style
• Symbolic conventions are below the surface of what
we see, the connotations that are associated with a
certain object. i.e. a rose means it is probably romantic
• Conventions are used to associate the audience with
the product and allow them to relate and understand
the text better.
6. S E T D E S I G N & L O C AT I O N
• I compared our Music Video to the Kooks’
Always Where I Need To Be. There were
several similarities between the much videos
as they both appealed to the genre
conventions.
• Both used varied locations including the
woods. Which allowed the video to have an
earthy and indie rock vibe. This will allow the
audiences to understand that the bands are
about the music not about their image and
the band themselves
The Kooks
Ours
7. S E T D E S I G N & L O C AT I O N
• We used a studio element that
was also shown in the Kooks’
video. These similarities show
the way the band is portrayed.
Showing how both bands are all
about the music
• They also both have shots where
the band are just hanging out
which shows the audience that
they are all friends and love
what they do.

8. C A M E R A W O R K
• There are several closeups in
both videos of the main singer.
However in our video there are
more closeups of all of the band
members where as with the kooks
it is mainly of the main singer.
• There are also establishing shots
in both music videos, showing the
audience the location and where
the band choose to ‘hang out’

9. P E R F O R M A N C E
• Both our music video and the Kooks’
video have similar performance
styles as they are all in a room
performing their song as a band
• However, the Kooks’ video goes on
and has a different performance
element, where they are on the
beach and other locations. They are
always together as a band however
• In our video we did individual shots
which makes our band look less in
unison
The Kooks
Ours
10. N A R R AT I V E
• Both of the Music Videos (Ours and
The Kooks’) show the band going
around different places and
spending time with each other
• They both also introduce a girl in
the narrative where the main singer
is alone with a girl
• This is a convention of the Indie
Rock genre as it can appeal to both
girls and boys in the target
audience Ours
The Kooks
11. C O S T U M E
• The costume with the main
singers were very similar, as
they both wore fury jackets. We
chose that costume as we knew
it was a symbolic convention of
the Indie Rock genre
• The costumes for the other
band members however were
quite different to the Kooks’
yet more similar to the 1975’s
costumes in The City
The Kooks
Ours
The 1975
12. M A K E U P
• The makeup in our video was quite
unconventional as we had two of our
band members wearing war like earthy
colours on their faces, however this is
not very obvious through the editing
and projections
• The projections in our video are similar
yet different to The 1975’s as they have
theirs projected on bodies and ours are
on everything. Although, the concept is
quite different and alternative which
make sense with the genre

13. E D I T I N G
• The editing in our video is rather
odd as it jumps forward in time
rapidly, however it is very fast
paced. This can be seen in The
Kook’s video as well as in Use
Somebody by Kings of Leon
• The editing in the Kings of Leon
video is rapid and changing
quickly however it changes from
different locations where as ours
goes a few seconds in time, this
is a technical convention of the
Indie Rock genre

15. A L B U M C O V E R
• Face Our album cover is very simple
yet puts a human face with a tree.
Which is similar to the Kings of Leon as
it it puts a face together with an animal
which might show their wild animalistic
side. This is quite conventional within
the Indie Rock genre as they show that
they are earthy.
• Positioning Both have similar
positions, the Kings of Leon album is a
closer view of the face however the
main aspect of both albums are the
faces
16. B A C K C O V E R
• Artwork The back cover for the Kings
of Leon cover compared to ours is
quite different as their relates directly
to the front cover as it is literally the
back view of the image on the cover.
The songs however are not very visible
• Our back cover is a simple yet relevant
part of the band’s image as it is a still
from the music video. I think both are
appealing to the target audience and
continue in the Indie Rock genre Both
have legal terms on the back and a
barcode
17. A L B U M C O V E R
• Colour The colour scheme is very
similar with our album artwork and the
Arctic Monkeys’ album artwork.
Although they both share a grey scale
that accepts the convention of using a
monochrome colour scheme as part of
the Indie Rock genre.
• The Arctic Monkeys album artwork is
more black dominated where as ours
is more white dominated, this shows
the way in which our band is more
lighthearted and more on the indie
side where as Arctic Monkeys are more
on the rock side of the genre
18. B A C K C O V E R
• Font The font on the back cover of
Arctic Monkeys is a very simple font
that is easy to read and quite harsh
as it is bold and in line. This makes
their music seem very rock based,
these are technical conventions of
rock based indie rock band
• Our font is more indie and edgy. It
is a hand written style and seems
more free spirited. The songs are
not centred so it looks more
original and authentic. A symbolic
convention of the genre.
20. H O M E PA G E
• Both our homepage and the homepage of Arcade Fire are image based and
the whole website is a mix of scroll down and links. The images on the
homepage of Arcade Fire’s website are hardly any of the band. This is a
symbolic convention of the Indie Rock genre as it shows the artist/band cares
more about the music rather than their star image and how they are portrayed
to their fan bases
• Ours only has a picture of the band as they are a new band, and it is important
that the audience is able to recognise and remember the band members
21. M E R C H A N D I S E
• Due to the fact that our band is new and
upcoming they do not have the budget to
have a successful merchandising campaign
just yet. When they have gained more
visibility we aim to create t-shirts and
wristbands
• The 1975, however is a very well established
band who have a wide variety of shirts,
jumpers and other things to promote they
band. Their merchandise is simple and edgy
which is a symbolic convention of the Indie
Rock Genre
• They also sell their music online which is a
smart tool for extra advertisement
22. T O U R I N G A N D D AT E S
• Having the tour dates and other important dates for the
fans and the band allows the fans to have easy access to
engage with the band. Our website allows them to find the
dates easily as well as book the dates online very quickly
and efficiently.
• This is very similar to The 1975’s website where they make
the dates very accessible and the online purchase
available.
23. F O N T & T Y P O G R A P H Y
• The typography and font for
both our website and the Arcade
Fire’s website are the same. It
looks like typewriter font, which
is quite edgy and makes the
band look more ‘indie’
• The 1975 however, have a
capitalised bold and simple font
which makes it easy for the
audience to read and adheres to
the conventions of the website,
where everything is simple and
cool.
24. L I N K S
• We have located our social media
links on the homepage of our website,
we did this because it is important for
our band, as a new band, to establish
a fan base, and that is most
successfully done through social
media communication.
• The Arcade Fire’s website has the
social media links on the homepage
as well for the same reasons as ours,
however on The 1975’s website there
are no social media links at all, other
than SoundCloud which enforces their
need for fans to listen to their music
25. P I C T U R E S / G A L L E RY
• In our website we have a specific gallery section, this is for the
audience to search and find certain photos of the band and to
remind them of who they are and what they look like as they are a
new band, that still need to establish a fan base
• The 1975, do not have a specific gallery section to their website
however they do have several images of the band, their fan mail
and upcoming tour dates. This makes the band seem very close to
their fans
26. L AY O U T
• Our website is all a scroll down
website which is different and makes
it stand out from any other Indie Rock
Website
• The 1975 and Arcade Fire websites
have scroll down pages but also has
individual pages for certain sections
like, tour, merchandise, dates, gallery
etc.
• Our website is constantly showing
images of the band to remind the
audience of who they are and is also
very informative and easy to use
