The document discusses conforming to the conventions of music videos by Icona Pop. It analyzes how the created media product incorporates elements like performance, friendship themes, and raw footage similar to Icona Pop's style. While the performance is not of Icona Pop, it fits the festival theme. Using different protagonists in the main video versus ancillary products makes the video more exciting for Icona Pop fans accustomed to seeing the artists. Overall the goal was to mostly follow Icona Pop's conventions while challenging expectations in some ways.
2. Andrew Goodwin.
We have conformed to majority of Andre Goodwins theories.
Music videos more often than not tend to include a demonstration of typical
genre characteristics.
Icona Pop always have a party element to their music videos. Though it isn't
Exactly the same, we have conformed to this idea by basing our footage at a
festival.
Icona pop also include a friend ship element, e have chose to completely conform
to their conventions by using an all girl friendship group. In most of their videos
they include a performance element that is done by them, this is typical of an indie/
Pop group music video. Though we haven't used them as our performance element
We have still included it, but of another band. We have chosen not to blur out the proof
Of it being another band as we believe that the performance element is still their and
it just adds on to fun festival atmosphere we were going for.
3. Andrew Goodwin
There are frequent references to the notion of looking and the voyeuristic
treatment of the female body.
Groping, touching and feeling of the female body is used in some of the products
icona pop produce. However when these moves are made it is always in a
humoristic way between the two artists. The mood of the product would change
if it was done by a male.
There is a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals.
Though Icona Pop use both images and Illustration in their products ( Get lost
official video) we decided to just use images, we have multiple place sin our
product where the lyrics match the image shown .Eg when in the chorus the
lyrics discus the sun and the waves, it is conveniently placed over our Swaziland
section where the sea and sun are both shown. We chose not to include
illustration as we wanted our video to have more of a raw footage effect and
conform to the Icona Pop conventions of having clips where the events weren't
planned and we felt the illustration would make the sections look fake.
4. Performance element
• The real media product we have been trying to conform to is the music
videos produced by Atlantic for the artists Icona Pop. In Icona Pops
music videos they include elements of performance, as we had the
advantage of me going to music videos in the summer we were filming,
we took this opportunity to film multiple different stage performances
and crowd reactions. Though The performance wans’t Icona Pop, we
chose to still use the footage in our video, though it challenges the
performance element theory we think it suits our video just as well as it
would if it was Icona Pop. I think this because our theme of having fun
and being at festivals with friends would involve a performance element
of any kind from any artist. If we had a completely different narrative,
then we would have to include a performance by Icona Pop if we wanted
to include a performance element. But as we have chosen to include a
theme that would involve performances from different types of artists
and more then one, including a performance element that is not our
artist, works for our product.
5. Conforming.
• We have chosen to mostly go with the conventions of Icona Pop. We have stayed
with the themes of fun and friendship which all of the products Icona Pop include,
we have followed their themes intensely as we have chosen to only show females
so that a strong message is presented about friendship without confusing the
audience by bringing in relationships. In our main product (our music video) we
have stuck with raw looking footage as we like the idea of our video looking
handheld and barely edited, whereas Icona Pop include filters in harsh colors like
black and white or purple washes.
• We have also developed the idea of using the artists in our products. We chose
not to use them across all our products as we wanted to use a performance
element but of a different artist however to decided to use them on our ancillary
products. We felt like having the ancillary product and the main product as
different protagonists would be better because it makes our main product more
exciting to watch. This is because the audience that Icona Pop attract will be used
to watching and seeing Icona Pop so the thought of having a different group of
people in the music video could have gone either way. But after doing some
research our audience told us that it was refreshing to watch different people in
the music video.
