Articles are types of adjectives
that:
• modify the noun
• indicate reference to the noun
Articles
Indefinite Article - A, An
Using indefinite article (a, an) indicates
that:
• it may be something that the speaker is
mentioning for the first time.
• it’s a countable noun
.i.e. Singular or one.
• It’s an indefinite noun .i.e. a common
and non-specific noun (ex. Person,
animal,thing,etc)
In Indefinite articles,
• “A” is placed before consonant
sound.
Ex: A cat, a helicopter, a university
• “An” is placed before vowel sound.
Ex: An umbrella, An honest man,
an apple.
Placement of “a” or “an”:
1. Used before singular nouns that
are unspecified:
Example: a boat, a pen, an orange,
an umbrella
Uses of indefinite articles
2. Represents a single unit or
collective numbers in a sentence.
Example: a dozen, a gallon, a
laundry, a long queue.

3. Used before half when half is
followed with a whole number.

Example: a small gift, an
interesting story.

Definite Article - The
Using definite Article (the) indicates that:
• It may be something that the speaker has
already mentioned
• It’s an uncountable noun .i.e. both
singular and plural nouns
• It’s a definite noun.i.e. specific noun
In Definite Article,
• The (pronounced as/θ/) is placed
before consonant sound.
Ex: The boat, The gift,
The university
• The (pronounced as /ðiː/ or /thee/) is
placed before vowel sound.
Ex: The (/ðiː/) Earth, The (/ðiː/)
equator.
Pronunciation of “the”:
1. Indicate a noun that is
definite/particular or has been
previously specified:
Example:
Please switch on the fan.
He liked the gift.

2. Unique Nouns:
Example: The Sun, The Taj Mahal

3. Names of Geographical areas :
Example: Where is the kitchen?
It is on the ground floor.

5. Musical Instruments:
Example: She knows how to play

consist the word:
‘states’, ‘republic’, ‘kingdom’,
‘federation’ with their name:
Example - The United Kingdom,

Federation, etc.

consisting of many islands:
Example: The Bahamas, The
Philippines, The Maldives, The
West Indies, etc.

  • 4. Indefinite Article - A, An Using indefinite article (a, an) indicates that: • it may be something that the speaker is mentioning for the first time. • it’s a countable noun .i.e. Singular or one. • It’s an indefinite noun .i.e. a common and non-specific noun (ex. Person, animal,thing,etc)
