Part 2: Topographic Maps A map is a two-dimensional representation of the earth's three-dimensional surface. Topographic maps are maps that show elevation, vegetation, rivers, land uses, roads, and other features on the earth's surface. We will be using a variety of topographic maps throughout the lab, so it is important that you know how to read and interpret the symbols on the maps. A. Use the Newport Beach Quadrangle and Topographic Symbol Key (Figure 1.5 at end of the lab) to answer the following questions. 1. What is the contour interval of the map? 2. What is the map scale? 3. What is the elevation between index lines? 4. What type of river is the Santa Ana Delhi Channel? 5. What type of submerged areas are the islands of Newport Bay? 6. What are the brown marks on either side of the Huntington Channel? 7. What are the latitude and longitude coordinates found on the northeast corner of the map? .
