Film beginning analysis – losses
1. Film beginning analysis – Losses (2011)
Director - Ryan Connolly
The Boss tell the driver to give him his gun. The driver reluctantly does so. After
a few seconds, the man casually reveals he used the paper clip to undo his
handcuffs and proceeds to kill the driver by stabbing it through his neck. The
man exits the room, where there is one guard standing at the end of the hallway
and two to the left. The man steals the first's gun and kills all three with it.
Another guard rounds the corner, and the man throws his cartridge so hard it
impales into the guard's head. The man slides and picks up one of the dead
guard's guns and kills the guard with it. He enters another hallway and kills one
more guard. Three more run toward him, one with an assault rifle. The man
quickly runs out of ammo and is pinned behind a wall. Another guard exits the
door to the side of the man, who the man quickly punches, steals the gun off of,
and uses as a human shield to kill the other three, though he wasted all of his
ammo. He walks through a door and up to a large staircase.
There are many action conventions in this short film that I would like to include
in my short film. The first being the use of colour grading. In all the shots you
can tell that a lot of time has been set aside for colour grading each clips to
perfection. The use of blue tints to suggest a tense atmosphere look amazing
and is something I would like to include in my short. Another factor is the
conversation between the boss and the agents. The 180-degree rule is used to
perfection in this clip and doesn’t confuse the viewer at all. A small factor that I
liked about the conversation was the fact the boos was using an e cigarette. This
minor detail worked really well as the little light used reflected of the vapour
really nicely and added a sense of tension to the shot. The camera movement
when the agent is running through the building is beautiful and smooth and
really adds to the tension and ties in well with the action genre conventions of
fast paced action.
