How Your Main Product and Ancillaries Reinforce Each Other
1. QUESTION 2 - HOW EFFECTIVE
IS THE COMBINATION OF YOUR
MAIN PRODUCT AND
ANCILLARY TEXTS?
BY JOE CLOUGH
2. When researching into the genre of rap, when I was finding inspiration
for my music video. I found that the digipaks and magazine adverts that
some artists has released, seemed to follow a theme. I found that artists
like Joey Bada$$ seemed to have a running theme, starting with his
digipak for his album; B4DA$$:
The front and back cover of his album feature a border of what seems as
Jamaican colours (green, red, yellow and black). Which happens to be the
same as his title colour.
Joey's theme tends to be black and white, except for a few outstanding
colours, which highlight key elements of the message he is trying to
portray.
This is similar to Kendrick Lamar's
newest album; To Pimp a Butterfly in
which he uses the same theme
throughout the album.
Kendrick also goes with a Black and White
theme, this could be to do with the story
behind the album. In which he talks about
both black and white as a race, and racism,
especially where he grew up etc. It also suits
the mood of the album, very hateful and
morbid for the majority.
3. MY PRODUCTS
When creating my ancillaries, I decided to give it a dark feel to it. This suited the
message of the album, and represented the artist; A$AP Rocky as a musician.
I did this by shooting my images in a small room with a black curtain, which got rid
of any unwanted lighting. I wanted the pictures I took to be of the actor within the
music video, as they were acting as Rocky, and this way it creates a sense of
connection between Rocky and the audience.
When editing these pictures, I kept to a theme; Purple. This is
because it is a direct link to the song that I used in my music
video, and therefore what I create represents the song, and
the whole album. As seen here, A$AP Rocky, tends to use the
colour purple a lot:
I wanted to use the unique pattern that Rocky uses in his albums,
and digipaks as I think that it makes him stand out, it isn't often
seen that an artist regularly sticks to one colour pattern throughout
their career, however Rocky seems to have done that.
When creating my texts, I chose to give them similarities, in
order to use synergy to appeal to the audience. I therefore
added images together, which worked well together, had
the same colour scheme, and were similar types of shots.
For my digipak in particular, I added together images that
were close-up shots of my actor, all of the images work
together, and stick to the theme.
